Chapter 80: Chapter 80: The Frost Knight of Death
Scott couldn't help but frown as he saw the grotesque ghoul behind Garus. With a glance, he signaled Jean and Nightcrawler to remain vigilant toward the stranger in front of them. However, the sheer power Garus displayed, combined with the uncertainty of his intentions, kept them from acting rashly.
Jean asked cautiously, "What is that thing behind you?"
"That's my summoned creature," Garus replied. Just then, another group of soldiers rushed forward from behind him. Before they could even raise their weapons, their bodies erupted in a mist of blood, leaving them lifeless on the ground.
The gruesome scene made Jean, Scott, and Nightcrawler wince in discomfort.
Nightcrawler hesitated but finally spoke, "Sir, isn't it unnecessary to kill all of them?"
Garus's tone was icy. "If I don't, what do you think they'll do? They won't negotiate with you."
Faced with the looming crisis and lacking alternatives, they chose silence.
Garus continued, "This is Colonel Stryker's experimental facility. My friend was captured and brought here for experimentation. Also, I know your Professor Charles Xavier."
Though unsure of the truth in his words, they decided to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.
Garus then asked, "Can you restore my friend's memory?"
Jean hesitated, surprised he knew about her abilities. Still, after a moment's thought, she agreed. "Alright, I'll give it a try."
Ignoring Scott's warning look, Jean approached Logan. She steeled herself against the stench and placed her hands on his temples.
Her powerful psychic abilities delved into Logan's mind, awakening the buried memories in his consciousness. His wild, confused gaze gradually cleared, his expression softening as recognition returned.
"Logan," Jean said, glimpsing his identity through his memories. Yet, she sensed an even deeper, inaccessible layer—a memory her powers couldn't touch.
Though calm, Logan's frustration grew as he struggled against the icy chains binding him. "Let me go!" he roared.
Unmoved, Garus tightened the Frost Chains' grip. "Not yet. We'll release you once we find Professor Xavier."
It was evident that Logan had not fully regained his memories from the other world.
After ensuring Logan was restrained, Jean addressed Garus, "If you truly are a friend of Charles's, we need your help. Right now, we're trying to rescue others and find the professor."
Garus nodded. "No problem. I'm looking for him as well."
Scott added, "First, we need to disable the power."
"No need. I'll get them out myself."
Under their astonished gazes, Garus summoned a frost-covered longsword. With a single swing, he carved a massive hole through the thick wall ahead.
"But there's a field ahead that nullifies mutant abilities. You won't be able to use your powers there," Scott warned, mistaking Garus for a mutant.
Garus clarified, "I'm not a mutant. That's not a problem."
Jean took the lead, guiding the group toward the holding cells for the X-Men. Alarms blared throughout the base:
"Weapon X has escaped. Weapon X has escaped. The base is under attack…"
Soldiers poured in from every direction. Scott kept a wary eye on Garus, prepared to remove his visor at a moment's notice. Yet, Garus dispatched the soldiers effortlessly before they could fire a shot.
Meanwhile, Colonel Stryker observed the chaos from a monitor. Realizing the base was lost, he retrieved a case containing various mutant genetic samples and rushed to the hangar where a helicopter awaited him.
As they passed an open room, Garus noticed something that made him stop. The room's door had been left ajar in the chaos, its researchers fleeing in haste. Inside, glass tanks filled with bodies preserved in formaldehyde lined the walls.
"What is that?" Garus murmured, stunned. His gaze fell on one tank containing a familiar figure. "Bobby? How is he here?"
The sight of Iceman's lifeless body shocked him. Bobby Drake was supposed to be at Xavier's school. Yet here he was, long dead but still emanating a powerful frost aura.
"Wait," Garus called out, running into the room.
Jean asked, "What is it?"
"Give me a few minutes," Garus replied.
Breaking the glass tank, Garus let its liquid contents spill onto the floor. The others watched in confusion.
"Who is that? Isn't he already dead?" Jean questioned, unable to understand Garus's actions.
Unseen by the others, a gray mist seeped from Frostmourne, snaking into Bobby's corpse. Moments later, the body moved, rising to its feet under their astonished gazes.
Revived as a Death Knight, Bobby's frost powers, enhanced by his mutant X-gene, grew exponentially. The chilling aura he now exuded was both palpable and formidable.
Even Garus felt a surge of anticipation at Bobby's newfound strength. Motioning for Bobby to follow, he said, "Let's go. Time to rescue the others."
Navigating the long corridors, they encountered no further resistance—the earlier carnage had cleared the way. Garus himself had lost track of how many soldiers he had slain.
Before long, they reached a control room. It was deserted, save for the prisoners visible in the holding cells below: Mystique, Quicksilver, Beast, and General Moira MacTaggert.
Seeing Jean at the control panel, the prisoners brightened with hope. However, the energy field that suppressed mutant abilities was still active, rendering them helpless.
Jean pressed a button on the console and shouted, "Raven, stand back! We'll get you out."
Garus raised Frostmourne, unleashing a gray blade of energy that sliced through the reinforced barrier, leaving a gaping hole. The prisoners scrambled out, relieved.
Jean urged, "I know where the professor is. We need to rescue him immediately."
Beast, noticing Garus, asked Jean, "Who is this? Was he the one who saved us?"
Garus introduced himself, "A friend of Professor Xavier. I believe you'll need my help."
Though mysterious, the urgency of their mission left no room for further questioning. Jean nodded. "Let's move. There's a jet in this base that can get us to him quickly."
[TL/N: Just to clarify, Kingpin is an Unholy Death Knight, Abomination a Blood Death Knight, and now Iceman a Frost Death Knight. These are the three specialization of the Death Knight in World of Warcraft. Garus is all of them as he can use the blood power, unholy power, and frost power of the three specialization. This was mentioned by author, though did not explicitly mentioned in the novel. You can see their difference based on appearance like color of the runes manifesting in their body.]
