Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Beneath the Shadow
In the control center of the floating fortress Naxxramas, Wanda deactivated its cloaking system. What had been a clear, sunny sky over the U.S. Capitol was suddenly dominated by the colossal structure, casting a massive shadow over the city below.
The crowd, which had been loudly protesting and pressing forward to surround Garus, froze in place. They raised their heads, and as they caught sight of the looming fortress, their mouths fell open in stunned silence.
"My God, what is that?"
"Are aliens finally attacking Earth?"
"It looks terrifying!"
Senator Keelan stared at the massive structure, its black stone underside hovering perilously close to the rooftops of the tallest buildings. He asked in a shaken voice, "What… what is that?"
Garus smirked. "This is my Mutant Academy—Sky Fortress Naxxramas. You've been looking for it, haven't you? Now that you've seen it, do you have anything to say?"
Nick Fury observed the structure with a mix of awe and apprehension. Compared to his helicarriers, this fortress was vastly larger. What shocked him even more was its lack of visible propulsion systems, a feature that made it nearly undetectable and incredibly stealthy.
At that moment, General Ross's phone rang.
"General Ross, an unidentified flying object has appeared above the Capitol. Our jets are en route. Should we engage?"
Ross hesitated. "Hold for now. Keep the jets on standby." Then, in a low voice, he turned to Garus. "Your Mutant Academy looks more like a war fortress. Flying it over Washington—is this your way of declaring war on us?"
Garus's expression remained calm. "That's not my intent. But if you're eager for a fight, I won't stop you." Holding his phone, he added, "Wanda, show them our weapons."
"Let me do it!" Pietro's voice crackled through the comms, brimming with excitement. Inside the control center, his form blurred with speed as he slotted fel crystals into the weapon energy chambers.
The cannons mounted across Naxxramas's walls were salvaged from the Burning Legion's interstellar fleet—arcane weapons powered by fel energy. As Pietro activated the systems, apertures opened along the fortress's outer walls, revealing glowing green energy cannons. One by one, they aimed at strategic locations across the city.
With a deafening roar, the cannons fired.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The White House lawn, a redevelopment district, the Potomac River near the Pentagon—all were struck by volleys of green, fel-charged fire.
Air raid sirens blared across the city as the green flames spread across the impact zones. Firefighters worked frantically to extinguish the infernos, their efforts hampered by the unnatural properties of the flames.
The crowd surrounding the Capitol, previously hostile and defiant, scattered like panicked insects. Their earlier bravado had evaporated.
General Ross stormed toward Garus, pulling a handgun and pressing it against his shoulder in a menacing gesture. "What the hell are you doing?"
Garus brushed Ross's hand away with casual disdain. "Relax. No one was hurt. Consider it a warning. You've always been so fond of using fists to settle arguments, haven't you?"
Ross found himself at a loss for words.
"This is American airspace; you're—"
Ross motioned for his soldiers to escort the babbling Senator Keelan away, realizing that an ill-prepared confrontation with Garus could end disastrously.
Nick Fury stepped forward, his tone measured. "Garus, I urge you to remain calm. We don't want this to escalate further. The issue of mutants can be discussed diplomatically."
No one else dared speak. Even S.H.I.E.L.D.'s new helicarrier, equipped with stealth technology, relied on massive turbine engines that generated noise and turbulence, making complete concealment impossible.
By contrast, Naxxramas had approached undetected—its silence, its immense scale, and its devastating firepower had rendered every radar, surveillance satellite, and early-warning system useless. The sheer potential of the fortress falling from the sky was enough to send chills through their ranks.
Garus dismissed Fury's plea with a wave. "There's no need for further discussion. I've said all that needs to be said. You've seen the Mutant Academy with your own eyes. Let me make this clear: the children and the academy are not negotiable. If you wish to continue this charade, be my guest."
With that, Garus opened a Death Gate and stepped through, leaving behind the chaos of the Capitol. He was well aware that the politicians wouldn't let this go. But with Skrull spies embedded within their government, he wasn't concerned. He would always know their plans before they acted.
As the Death Gate closed, Naxxramas faded from sight, its cloaking system reactivating seamlessly. The fortress disappeared as silently as it had arrived.
"Quick, track that airborne fortress!" The sudden disappearance of Naxxramas sent the officers at the air force base into a frenzy.
But no matter how they searched, no trace of the colossal structure could be found.
The events at the Capitol spread rapidly across the globe, fueling wild speculation. Some even suggested that Garus was an alien invader, and the rumors gained traction with unsettling credibility.
After Garus departed, the Secretary of Defense called Nick Fury aside and brought him to the Pentagon. A late-night meeting was convened to discuss the day's extraordinary events, knowing that the eyes of the world were fixed on them.
General Ross slammed his hand on the table in frustration. "The United States government will not bow to anyone's threats. We must find a way to bring down that damn mutant academy!"
Secretary of Defense Mr. Marn chuckled derisively. "Bring it down? Do you even know where it is now? Or how to counter their technology, which far surpasses ours?"
General James chimed in. "Exactly. If we can't even locate them, how are we supposed to engage them?"
Ross ignored their remarks and turned to Fury. "Director Fury, can your new Helicarrier stand against Garus' Sky Fortress?"
Fury shook his head gravely. "Not likely. While I don't know the specifics of their defenses, their firepower is overwhelming, and their stealth capabilities far outclass ours. Unless we can pinpoint their location and deploy overwhelming force, we'd be outmatched. And frankly, I don't recommend such a course of action."
Fury then turned to Secretary Marn with a pointed question. "Mr. Marn, where is the President? After something of this magnitude, his absence is glaring."
Ross sneered, cutting in before Marn could answer. "That coward is hiding."
Ross continued, his voice rising with conviction. "This isn't just a provocation against the U.S. government—it's a potential threat to the safety of every nation on this planet. I expect you, Director Fury, to make your Council understand the gravity of this situation so we can develop a united strategy."
Fury nodded. "I'll inform them, but this requires careful deliberation. Rushing in would only worsen matters."
The Secretary of Defense rose from his seat, signaling the meeting's end. "Let's adjourn for now. And remember, we can't lose focus on Hydra. Investigate that Congressman Karen thoroughly."
