Chapter 306 : Dr. Banner: How can I prove that I am myself?
Just as the future Dr. Banner leapt onto the rooftop and launched himself into the air, he suddenly felt a powerful force clamp down on him like a magnet.
Startled, he looked down and saw an orange-hued energy whip shoot up, coiling tightly around his waist like a spirit snake.
Before he could react, the intense pull yanked him downward.
The impact of his landing sent the world spinning, nearly knocking him unconscious.
When he opened his eyes again, he realized the orange energy whip had him pinned to the ground, immobilized as though anchored to the earth itself.
"Who is it?" the future Dr. Banner growled, struggling with all his might. He looked toward the origin of the attack and saw a figure emerge slowly from beneath the bridge—cloaked in crimson, a wizard stepped into the light.
"It's you? Strange!" Dr. Banner's eyes lit up.
He hadn't expected to encounter his old ally here. They had once fought side by side against countless enemies in the future.
He assumed Strange had simply mistaken his identity and lashed out in error.
"Let me go! I'm one of us!" Banner shouted, hoping to correct the misunderstanding.
But to his confusion, Strange didn't retract the energy whip.
The magical tether continued to glow ominously, and Strange's gaze remained guarded.
"Who are you? Why are you here?" he asked, his tone calm but edged with suspicion.
In this timeline, Strange had no familiarity with Banner. When the future Hulk joined Hell's Kitchen, this Strange had still been training under the Ancient One in Kamar-Taj.
Since returning to Hell's Kitchen, Strange had kept a low profile, cloistered in his apartment as he honed his mystical craft. The world had become too dangerous to explore casually.
The Strange who stood before Banner now wasn't even the real one—it was merely a clone.
Of course, Strange wasn't entirely ignorant of Banner's existence. He'd heard stories about him while dining at the Good Luck Restaurant. He knew there was a chat group with bounty missions and even a shopping system.
Strange was curious, but not impulsive. He preferred not to intrude on Alex Ray's affairs. He was confident that if he were ever meant to join the group, Alex would invite him in due time.
(If Alex Ray were present, he'd probably complain: "It's not that I don't want to invite Strange—it's that his friend level isn't maxed yet. You can't just add anyone to the group!")
Upon hearing Strange's response, the future Dr. Banner realized this timeline's version of Strange didn't recognize him at all.
With a sigh, he introduced himself. "My name is Dr. Banner. I'm a member of the Avengers. I've come from the future. I need your help to obtain the Time Stone."
"Time Stone? Future?" Strange raised an eyebrow, uninterested in playing along with what he assumed was a delusion. To him, the man was either insane—or worse, a threat.
The Ancient One had not yet entrusted Strange with the Time Stone. He didn't even fully grasp what it was yet.
Time travel and parallel universes were topics Strange had only heard mentioned in passing by Alex Ray. He had met people from other worlds, sure—but someone claiming to come from the future? That was harder to swallow.
What's more, Strange did know who Dr. Banner was—at least, by reputation. He'd often overheard conversations at the Good Luck Restaurant. They said Banner could turn into a huge green monster.
And right now, that "monster" was still tearing through Chitauri invaders on the battlefield.
Strange peered into the distance and instantly spotted the Hulk. Amid the chaos, Hulk's towering figure stood out—brutally hammering Chitauri with abandon.
That meant the real Dr. Banner was still active on the front lines.
So who was the man standing before him?
Strange immediately dismissed the idea that this was really Banner from the future. More likely, it was an imposter—someone using shapeshifting or mimicry to infiltrate.
Perhaps his goal was the New York Sanctum. Strange had only recently arrived there, and this stranger somehow knew that. That alone was suspicious.
Strange began seriously contemplating killing the imposter outright—until a nagging doubt hit him: what if he was telling the truth?
"Damn it," Strange muttered internally. "If only Alex Ray were here. This guy's strength has dropped recently… Why hasn't he wrapped things up yet?"
If Alex were present, he would've instantly discerned whether the visitor was genuine.
But taking this stranger to Alex was out of the question. The battlefield was no place for uncertainties. If this man was hostile, and Alex was ambushed, it could be catastrophic.
Only one option remained.
Strange turned to the restrained man and asked, "How do you plan to prove you're Dr. Banner?"
The future Banner stared back blankly. "How can I prove I'm myself? I don't have my ID or driver's license."
Who would carry documentation when time-traveling?
"I mean—look at me! I'm green!"
Who else but Banner had green skin?
"I'm really Banner! Stop messing around and give me the Time Stone already, Strange!" he pleaded, panic creeping into his voice.
Time was running out. If he didn't retrieve the Time Stone soon, he'd be pulled back into the future, and their timeline's survival would be jeopardized. They didn't have enough energy left to make another quantum jump.
He thrashed, attempting to break free.
Strange watched him calmly. "Don't bother. The whip has been upgraded. The more you resist, the tighter it gets. Struggle too much, and it'll strangle you."
Banner froze, panting in frustration.
"How about this," Strange said, folding his arms. "Answer a few questions. If your answers check out, I'll believe you. I'll take you to the Ancient One. I don't have the Time Stone—but maybe she does."
