Chapter 296 : The Illuminati and the X-Men Enter
Although the appearance of Iron Man made the citizens of New York feel as though their savior had arrived, the number of Chitauri was simply too overwhelming, and their weapons were highly advanced. Despite the efforts of Iron Man and the city's defensive forces, a large number of Chitauri still broke through and stormed into the heart of the metropolis.
The New York was instantly plunged into chaos and panic. Explosions echoed continuously, flames shot into the sky, and buildings crumbled under the intense impact, reduced to nothing but ruins.
The air was thick with smoke and the acrid scent of burning. In the streets, people screamed in terror, running frantically in search of shelter.
Although the federal government responded swiftly—dispatching wave after wave of fighter jets and deploying tanks and armored vehicles to attack the alien warships—residents of New York still felt anything but safe.
That sense of dread only deepened when a colossal Chitauri mothership, over a hundred meters long, emerged from the black hole. Its vast silhouette blotted out the Manhattan skyline, casting the city into darkness.
The ominous energy radiating from the ship sent chills down everyone's spines. It hovered like a harbinger of annihilation, capable of razing the entire city in an instant. Whether it was the people of New York or the global audience watching the live broadcast, everyone was gripped by the same fear—this could be the end of the world.
In the midst of the chaos, the FBI and military found themselves fighting not only the alien threat but also dealing with opportunists using the invasion as cover to loot, destroy, and kill—terrorists, criminals, and scavengers alike, all adding to the city's suffering.
. . . . . .
"This is the first time I've seen such a massive war," Alex Ray said, standing atop the Fisk Building, watching the destruction unfold below.
He'd seen this invasion play out in movies before, but seeing the Chitauri attacking the Earth in person—thousands of warships swarming the New York—was something else entirely. It was both terrifying and awe-inspiring.
"Quit daydreaming and lend a hand, will you?" Tony Stark's voice crackled through Alex's earpiece. He was currently battling Chitauri forces in the sky.
Tony had every reason to be the most involved—most of Stark Industries' assets were located in New York. He might be rich, but if the city fell, he'd lose his company's headquarters and far more.
Despite the upgrades to his armor, Tony alone couldn't hope to stop an entire alien army.
"Relax, your reinforcements are here!" Alex replied, gazing toward the distant horizon where a team was quickly approaching.
The Illuminati had arrived—minus the King of Atlantis—but including Reed Richards, Human Torch, Invisible Woman (Susan Storm), Black Bolt, and Falcon.
With their arrival, the battle escalated rapidly.
Even while fighting the Chitauri head-on, they made an effort to rescue citizens caught in the crossfire. Reed used his elastic powers to stretch across debris and falling rubble, saving people while proudly promoting the Illuminati, eager for the world to recognize this secretive powerhouse of a team.
Meanwhile, across the city, several other unusual figures slipped into the battlefield unnoticed amid the chaos.
The X-Men had arrived—mutants known to the world yet often misunderstood—and their presence brought a surge of fresh hope.
Each member brought unique abilities: Storm, Cyclops, Iceman, Jean Grey—each a powerhouse in their own right.
Storm summoned a furious gale, disrupting the Chitauri's coordinated air assault. Her long white hair whipped violently in the tempest as she led her team into combat like a force of nature.
Iceman slid across the streets on frozen tracks, conjuring thick walls of ice to shield fleeing civilians, freezing invaders in their tracks with a flick of his wrist.
Cyclops fired precise optic blasts like concentrated laser cannons, his beams cutting through Chitauri armor as if it were paper.
Though none of them declared their identities, their abilities made it obvious to any bystander: the X-Men had joined the fight.
Their presence became a beacon of hope.
With the combined efforts of the Illuminati and the X-Men, the Chitauri's advance was finally stalled.
"That's amazing! Are these the superheroes?"
"I know those are the X-Men! But who's the other group?"
"I heard they're called the Illuminati. A federal-affiliated superhero team!"
"Mutants really seem like good people! I heard they all live in Hell's Kitchen now. That guy who freezes people is awesome!"
"Yeah, that's Iceman! I saw him at the Hell's Kitchen Race once!"
"Looks like we've got a shot now. Maybe we don't even need Alex Ray!"
"Don't be stupid! Most of the mutants are in Hell's Kitchen now. You think they just showed up by accident? Without the Lord of Hell's Kitchen—Alex Ray—none of this would've been possible!"
While coordinating the battle, Reed Richards tuned into the crowd's chatter. He was pleased to hear that the Illuminati were finally gaining recognition.
But what irritated him was how often Alex Ray and Hell's Kitchen were mentioned in the same breath of praise.
"Damn it... Alex Ray hasn't even done anything yet, and he's already stealing the spotlight! I'm the one saving you!" Reed growled internally, throwing himself harder into the rescue efforts out of sheer spite.
High above, Tony Stark noticed that the Chitauri firepower targeting him had lessened. For a brief moment, he let his guard down—just long enough for a massive alien warship to lock onto him.
A giant laser beam streaked across the sky like lightning.
Tony's eyes widened behind his visor. He immediately tried to alter his flight path to evade it, but he was too slow.
The blast hit him full-on, sending him crashing to the ground like a blazing meteor.
He slammed into the pavement, armor sparking. Dazed and winded, Tony struggled to stay conscious.
Inside the suit, JARVIS's voice blared: "Warning. Warning. Suit integrity compromised. Damage exceeds 50%."
Tony's heart sank. One more hit like that, and he wouldn't survive.
And sure enough, another beam was charging up, aimed directly at him.
Just as he braced himself for the worst, a tall figure suddenly stepped in front of him.
Clad in armor and wielding a star-spangled shield, Captain America appeared, raising his shield just in time to deflect the beam.
"Stark, you seriously zoning out mid-battle?" Steve Rogers barked, his stance unwavering.
