Chapter 7: Chapter 7: New Hairstyle
Gwen woke up very early today, just at 6 in the morning, preparing for a morning jog, and George had just returned home.
After his night shift, he naturally returned home earlier to get some sleep, but he didn't expect to see Gwen preparing for a morning jog, which was surprising.
He said, "Why are you up so early, my princess? It's not like you."
Any parent might be happy seeing their children start picking up good habits, but he knew his daughter stayed up late revising every day. He thought she should rest more.
To this, Gwen naturally gave an excuse in case she someday showed above-average physical ability while she wasn't practicing any sports, which would seem bizarre.
The morning jog was her excuse. She said, "Morning, Dad! Huh? Didn't I tell you about my band project with MJ?"
"As the drummer, I need more stamina, more physical strength, and all that. I have to do concerts that last an hour, so I decided to start today."
George raised an eyebrow at her explanation but didn't question it further. He rubbed his tired eyes and nodded. "Well, that's a good initiative, Gwen. Just don't overdo it. And remember to stretch properly before you start running."
Gwen smiled, tying her sneakers. "Don't worry, Dad. I'll be fine."
Seeing her leave in good spirits, he couldn't help but shake his head and sigh. "It's good to be young."
After leaving George, Gwen started running, controlling her pace, as with her body enhancement, she would be suspicious if she ran at her current normal speed.
Being in a world where every little bit of your actions may attract unwanted attention is really troublesome. The only thing she prayed for now was not to meet Charles.
She didn't know how he judged whether someone was a mutant or not. If it was just because they had a stronger mental signature, that would be troublesome. She could only hope it was because mutants had some kind of special signature.
But one thing was in her mind: she must find a way to avoid mind control, mind reading, mind altering, and the like.
Gwen's little morning run ended when she returned at 7:10, just in time to take a bath, eat, and prepare herself for school.
There wasn't a single drop of sweat on her when she returned, which made George, who hadn't slept, ask, "Are you sure you went for a morning run? I don't see any sign of sweat on you, girl."
To this, Gwen rolled her eyes and said, "Come on, it's the first day. I can't give myself too hard of a workout since my body isn't used to it, or I might get sick."
George chuckled at her reply, shaking his head. "Fair enough, princess. But don't forget, the whole point of jogging is to get your heart pumping. Take it slow, but not too slow, alright?"
"Got it, Dad," Gwen said, grabbing an apple from the kitchen counter and taking a bite. She glanced at the clock. "I better hurry or I'll be late for school."
...
Life at school was almost the same as yesterday, with only a few changes like the classes she had. The only new thing today was at the end of school.
It was MJ who asked her, "Hey Gwen, how about a band rehearsal today?"
Gwen shook her head. "I have something to do today again. I'm going to get myself a new hairstyle. Do you want to come?"
Mary's eyes lit up. How many times had she wanted Gwen to get a new hairstyle, but the latter always refused, finding many reasons? Of course, she wouldn't let it go today.
She said, "Okay, wait a minute. I'll call home and let them know I'll be late."
Gwen nodded. MJ's relationship with her parents was rather strange. During her childhood, the family had always been moving due to work.
This meant MJ had to change friends and homes almost every six months, and it wasn't until later that they settled. Because of this, they still weren't in great harmony.
Gwen understood MJ's parents. Though it may seem easy, making a living to support a family wasn't simple. At least they hadn't divorced or abandoned her, which already spoke to their love.
As Mary was still living with them, she didn't understand how hard it was to live on her own, let alone take care of someone — a whole family, at that.
After a quick call home, MJ gave Gwen a thumbs-up. "All set. So, what kind of hairstyle are we talking about? Something edgy, chic, or classic? You've got to give me a hint!"
Gwen thought of the new hairstyle she wanted. It was a way of saying goodbye to the original Gwen, her past life, and a welcome to the new chance she had.
Of course, she thought of a reason in case someone asked why the change. She replied to MJ, "It's just some changes. I'm about to start my career as a superstar, so I may as well have a hairstyle that represents me."
MJ was surprised by Gwen's confidence but then chuckled. This was exactly what she wanted. She said, "Oh, so it's something edgy?"
Gwen didn't reply this time but just walked. MJ could only follow her friend helplessly. It didn't take long for the two to make their way to a nearby salon that MJ had recommended during their talk.
Gwen looked at the salon that screamed luxury and could already feel her little wallet crying. She could only grit her teeth and follow. Anyway, money was made to be spent.
"Welcome to Luxe Looks. Do you have an appointment?"
Seeing the receptionist, MJ nudged Gwen forward. "No appointment, but my friend here is looking for a new transformation. Can you squeeze us in?"
The receptionist glanced at the schedule before nodding. "We can take you in about 15 minutes. Would you like to take a seat and browse our style catalog in the meantime?"
Gwen shook her head. She already had a style in mind, and she had even drawn it on paper to better illustrate what she wanted. She replied, "Thanks, but no. I already have an idea of what I want. We'll just wait for our turn."
Although MJ wanted to pester Gwen, she knew the latter would just tell her to wait. She could only bring up something that had been bothering her more.
She said, "Gwen, since the founding of our band, we haven't done a single session, and you've seemed so busy and occupied these past two days. Are you sure everything is alright?"
MJ said this seriously, without a hint of the playful tone she usually used. Gwen replied, "I didn't want to tell you, but I'm looking for potential members for our band, but I still haven't found anyone that satisfies me."
Well, a little lie wouldn't hurt anyone, or what could she say? MJ bought Gwen's lie; she even felt a little guilty that Gwen was taking things seriously while she was doubting her.
It seemed that she wasn't the only one working hard in secret. MJ had been training her vocal and singing skills in the past few days. Strangely enough, she was talented in this area and had already reached an average level.
MJ's expression softened. "I'm sorry for doubting you, Gwen. I guess I was just worried. But hey, if you're working that hard, I'll step up too. We'll make this band something amazing together!"
This was the advantage of people like MJ: they might have some arrogance or pride, but they wouldn't scheme against you. When they promised something, they would definitely follow through.
Their conversation was interrupted when the receptionist called for Gwen. "Miss Stacy? The stylist is ready for you now."
Gwen nodded and followed the receptionist while MJ trailed behind, clearly excited to see what transformation her friend had in mind.
The stylist was a fashionable woman with bright purple streaks in her hair. She looked at MJ and nodded to her, probably an acquaintance.
When she laid her eyes on Gwen, the latter felt goosebumps. She could literally see stars in the stylist's eyes, as if she were looking at some beautiful jade.
Gwen resisted the urge to leave, took a sketch from her school bag, and handed it over to Dana. It revealed a bold design: a right-side half-undercut with the remaining hair swept to the left in stylish waves.
That's right, Gwen chose the exact same style as her counterpart from the Spider-Verse. She liked this style very much, but unfortunately, it wasn't suited for her in her last life. In this new body, however, it felt like the right fit.
MJ gasped dramatically. "Oh my God, Gwen, you're going for that? This is going to be epic!"
Gwen could tell that MJ was just being dramatic, so she turned her attention to Dana, who seemed to approve of Gwen's choice.
She said, "This is bold, unique, and absolutely stunning! You've got the face for it too. Let's get started — this is going to be a masterpiece."
Gwen naturally didn't waste time as she liked to be straightforward. She settled into the chair, and Dana draped a cape over her, beginning to assess her hair, running her fingers through it.
The process began with Dana sectioning Gwen's hair, expertly shaving the right side down to a smooth undercut. Gwen watched her reflection, noting how the edgy look started to take shape.
Meanwhile, MJ regretted not coming with a camera to take some photos. Still, she occasionally gave commentary, like, "Oh, this angle is perfect!" and "You're going to break hearts with this look!"
As time passed, Gwen started to feel bored and had already begun regretting coming. Her hunch was right: only about an hour later, Dana spun the chair around for Gwen to see the final result.
'Finally, this torture is over, but it seems the result is worth it. There's no way—I'm too handsome and cool,' the smile on her face revealed her thoughts.
MJ practically jumped out of her seat, clapping her hands in excitement. "Oh Gwen, it seems that I'm charmed by a succubus now, what do I do?"
Gwen, who was tilting her head slightly to admire how the waves fell perfectly over the undercut, heard MJ's tease and replied, "Like they say, if you can't help it, enjoy it. I mean, you know what succubi are for, right?"
MJ burst into laughter at Gwen's cheeky reply.
Dana, now packing up her tools, chimed in, "Well, Gwen, if being a succubus means looking this good, you might as well own it." She winked playfully before handing Gwen a mirror for a closer look.
Gwen tilted her head and smirked. "Not bad, not bad at all. Thanks, Dana. You're a magician with scissors."
Dana was happy to hear Gwen's compliments. It was her happiness to see people's faces after a new hairstyle.
She also flattered Gwen by saying, "Well, Gwen, if being a succubus means looking this good, you might as well own it."
Unfortunately, Gwen was too thick-skinned to blush, but MJ didn't believe in evil and wanted to see her friend shy. She said, "Right? Even if we don't do anything, our band will definitely be popular just for your look."
Dana raised her eyebrows and asked, "A band? Are you in a music band?"
"Yeah," MJ replied before sighing, "Unfortunately, we're just a newly founded band and are still lacking two members for our ideal four-person band."
Dana nodded and seemed to think about something before saying, "What positions are your band lacking?"
MJ replied, "I'm the singer, and Gwen is the drummer. We're now looking for a bassist and a guitarist."
Gwen looked at Dana, feeling that the latter would likely propose someone, and sure enough, she said, "A guitarist, huh? If it doesn't bother you, I can recommend someone. Of course, it depends on whether you both agree if she joins or not."
END OF THE CHAPTER
