Married to my suspect

Chapter 81: CHAPTER EIGHTY ONE

I burrowed under the covers and sighed with as much contentment as I could feel. Even though this had been my home for just a little over six months, I had missed my bed. Plus, as opposed to a hotel, I was able to be more comfortable with Jonathan's presence here. It wasn't mine to begin with.

Speaking of the devil, there was a rap on the door and Jonathan entered. That act of consideration made me want to reconsider, but even though my plans needed to be worked on, I couldn't afford to.

Jonathan entered, dressed still in the suit he had flown back with. His office had a suite next to it where some of his things were in, so I had feared him not coming back to the room but thankfully he had. I didn't want to chase the man out of his own room.

"Can we talk?" Jonathan asked in a tone I couldn't decipher. I sighed and rather than staying under the covers like I was tempted to, I moved until half my body was under the covers. If I was being honest, the fact I couldn't read Jonathan was causing like half of my anxiety. I'd known he'd be shocked when I had mentioned it, and he had been, but then the same way I'd retreated emotionally, he had as well, and I wasn't sure what his response will be. Which was even why I'd mentioned the penalty of the contract. I was ready to do anything as long as he granted me what I wanted. There was no point in dragging it any further.

"Sure." I replied.

Instead of sitting in the bed or on the couch that sat almost diagonically to the bed, he sat at the vanity beside me, he'd bought for me. I hid my emotions. With how close he was, he wouldn't miss much.

"We still have five months to go in the contract and I know there was no term for if either of us wanted out before the year was over. That was intentional." He nodded when he noticed my arched brows.

"But you have to give me an explanation. We were together out of the country for more than a fortnight and we spent time with my family for two of those days so you'll forgive me if I believe your reason has to do with meeting them and that doesn't sound right. The least I have to do is apologize and it's really difficult for me to know what to apologize for since you never let anything out about being uncomfortable."

I opened my mouth and closed it, trying to formulate my words. "It wasn't anything you did or your family. I just didn't want to keep on deceiving your parents." I shrugged. "Knowing how broken hearted they'll be, I feel it's better that we just put an end to it before it becomes more complicated to do so."

Jonathan massaged his jaws. "Are you sure that's the only reason you want to call it quit?"

I nodded, hope already blossoming. Was he going to let me go? But what about the pen and all the questions I had for him?

He stood up abruptly and I jumped. "Sure. That's something I've intentionally not been trying to think about it but I don't think getting a divorce right now will be possible. Unfortunately, since the timing couldn't be any more horrible, we just met my family, we still have Eleni to think about and I'm sorry but we just completed a successful acquisition I've been working on for a while."

I sighed and my mom's face came swimming against my brain. "But it can be quiet. How about we…" The sound of my phone ringing made me trail out the words, the caller ID effectively robbing me of my thoughts.

Jonathan probably saw the desire in my eyes and waved his hands. "You can take it."

"Lucas." I greeted, coming down from the bed and going into the restroom, but not before seeing Jonathan's jaw tighten.

"What the heck girl? I've been trying to reach you these past few days. I even had to scour the news to make sure no news of any accident was reported on you. Where have you been?"

I winced. "I'm sorry. I was out of the country. I was actually planning to call you this evening. How about Lillian? I've been replaying our last meeting and something doesn't feel right…"

Lucas laughed. "Calm down baby girl. If you were curious, you should have called. At least before traveling abroad. How is your mom? I've not been seeing her around these days."

I stopped short, then remembered mom saying she had run into him a couple of times at her shop. "She's fine. She was a little sick and had to rest at home. I'll go and see her soon."

"Let's go together. I want to say Hello to her as well."

I arched my brows. "Why would you do that?"

I could hear his laugh. "Now that I've run into her and come to know her a little bit, I've come to care for her as well. A mother of a friend is practically a mother to me. Besides, it must suck to be sick and alone. Seeing you and I will make her cheer up faster."

Did he know that final statement will hurt me as much? I shook my head. "There's no reason for you to." Remembering how mom had assumed something was happening between Lucas and me, that was definitely going to be a horrible idea.

It sounded like someone was talking in the background, so I perked up. "Is that Lillian? How is she doing?"

"No. She's not the one. I have a guest. She's fine. She's sleeping"

I breathed a sigh of relief. I'd been worried about her. I made a mental note to call her as soon as possible. As soon as I finished my conversation with Jonathan. I could hear his footsteps as he walked round the room. I peeked out and sure enough, he was walking around with an annoyed expression on his face. Perhaps he wasn't used to his meetings being interrupted, but I also wondered if he was annoyed because of something else.

I huffed. There was no way. We were just pure business partners. A little different from the way others worked but still business partners. There was no way his reaction was because he… towards me. I shook my head and focused back on my call. Lucas was in the middle of explaining something.

"Sorry I didn't get that." I said and heard Lucas sigh.

"I was proposing we see each other after work tomorrow. I've missed you and want to see your face. Will your husband…" He started in his usual condescending tone whenever he used the word and cleared his throat. "He won't mind, right?" He said instead.

I smiled. At least he was trying his best. "No he won't. Will you come with Lillian?"

Lucas said something I didn't get. "What??"

"No she won't. I guess she forgot to tell you. She has gotten a job at a make up studio where they resume early and close late. It will be selfish to drag her outside after that." Something sounded like it fell, and I heard Lucas hiss.

"What was that? Are you okay?" I asked, concerned.

"Of course. It was just the glass I was holding that shattered. Nothing to concern your pretty self about."

I rolled my eyes. Always with the compliments. "Alright." I waited a bit. "You're not too bad yourself." We both laughed at that and I sighed happily. Even if things were a bit unstable right now in my world as a married woman and my head, I still had my best friend. That was one thing I could count on.

"Thanks Lucas." I burst out and Lucas laughed again.

"What for? For not getting hurt?" He replied jokingly and I shook my head, a pleased smile on my face.

"That. And for everything. Thanks for calling. I'll call you tomorrow to confirm where we'll meet."

"Alright. You're welcome." He said seriously. After a second or three of neither of us saying anything, I dropped the call.

I clasped my hands together. Time to get back to reality.
