Married to my suspect

Chapter 77: CHAPTER SEVENTY SEVEN

DANIELLE'S POV

Something felt wrong. I opened my eyes and looked into the darkness, wondering what had woken me up. I unwrapped myself from the duvet I had hogged during the night and squinted my eye to see what the time was. It was a few minutes to six. I got down as quietly as I could, not wanting to wake Jonathan up, and went into the bathroom to wash my face. I stared at my reflection and finally realized what had woken me up. My gown that was unzipped had already fallen down my shoulders. I poured water on my face.

I tiptoed into the room and took my nightwear, changing into it in the bathroom. The memories of last night were finally coming back. I had left Jonathan in the car, and mom had called me to check up on me. After that, I had probably fallen asleep on the couch and Jonathan had carried me to the bed and probably had been the one to unzip my dress so I could sleep better. I sighed and splashed water on my face again, remembering my resolve of yesterday. No matter how sweet he was or how charming he was, I was going to stop the damned attraction I was feeling for him. I had to find a way to ask him about the pen I'd found in his home office and at work. I was a hundred percent it was the one I'd been looking for.

My call with my mom, if anything, had been very motivating. She wasn't feeling fine and had to go to the hospital yesterday and wanted me not to worry when I found out since she was under my insurance. If my father were still here, she wouldn't be so alone when she was feeling poorly. Thankfully, it had just been a fever because of stress, but it hurt that she was alone when she needed someone desperately by her side.

I switched off the bathroom light and tiptoed back into the room. I covered Jonathan with the duvet gently and also got under it. I felt Jonathan begin to stir and closed my eyes, turning my back to him, feigning sleep.

"Are you awake?" He asked when I couldn't stop tossing and turning, and I froze. He laughed, voice husky from sleep. "I know you are. Unable to sleep?"

Not seeing any help for it, I turned towards him. "I just woke up, but it's still early."

Jonathan yawned. "What time is it?"

"Ten minutes after five." I replied after checking the clock, and Jonathan yawned again. It was no wonder he was that tired when he had to attend meetings as soon as he landed. I thought of saying something to him, but I changed my mind. The goal was to put a distance between us.

He turned until he was laying on his back. "I don't know why I'm so tired. I'll try to get some more sleep. We will move by nine so you can too."

I nodded and stayed quiet as he drifted back to sleep. When I was sure he was asleep again, I picked up my phone. At this point, I knew it would be really difficult to fall asleep again, so I wondered what I could do to pass the time that didn't involve me leaving the cozy bed. It was a little early to call Eleni or my mom to check up on them, so I set an alarm to remind me later. I wondered how she had fared between yesterday and today. Hopefully, the creep that was following her around was gone by now. I couldn't imagine having to summon all my courage to leave the house because there was a stalker on the loose that even the law had no hold over, simply because he was wealthy.

I stopped my line of thought. I didn't want to terrify myself by thinking of that creep, so I started counting the ceiling tiles above me. I had just gotten to the fortieth one when Jonathan's voice distracted me.

"What did you say?" I asked, irritated at the distraction, and opened my eyes. Hadn't I kept it opened while I was counting?

The room was a lot brighter than earlier and Jonathan was beside me, looking so yummy in dark jeans and white button down shirt. "It's almost nine. Wake up."

My eyes widened, and I looked at the clock beside me. Shit, I'd fallen asleep again. How like me to sleep when I had something on my mind. Thankfully, we still had about thirty minutes.

"When did you wake up?" I asked sleepily.

Jonathan smiled. "About twenty minutes ago. Someone is waiting for me at the lobby. I'll be right back."

I sat up straight at that. "Who? Your family?"

"No. A business acquaintance. He has a business proposition for me." He said and left the room. I yawned and got down from the bed to freshen up. I took a shower and came out in a bathrobe. Jonathan was still not back yet. I got dressed in a black high-waisted wide-leg trousers and a pink silk blouse, pairing it with a cream cashmere cardigan and gold earrings. Even if I was going to be chewed or cursed out if Jonathan cornered me enough to make me spill my initial plan, I was going to do so looking beautiful.

I set a nude wedge at the foot of the bed, and the hotel door opened with a click. Jonathan saw that I was ready and pulled out a navy sweater from the wardrobe.

"Are you hungry? I have lunch planned, but it won't be until twelve."

I shrugged. "Not overly, but I could eat something."

Jonathan pulled out a box from a cupboard. "We still have our cookies from yesterday. Let's order some tea and take it before leaving." Jonathan dialled for room service and dropped the telephone after making an order for the recommended tea for the morning.

I looked at the clock, we had less than ten minutes till nine. "Won't that affect the itinerary you already planned out?"

Jonathan glanced at me. "I planned it myself, and a little delay won't hurt. Plus it won't be right not to have anything before we left, especially since the cookie has been tempting me since yesterday."

I smiled. "So I wasn't the only one that felt that way. That's a relief." I teased and Jonathan laughed. Room service came, and our tea was served. Jonathan had also requested a tray, so we put some of our cookies inside it.

I took a bite of the cookie and hummed. "I know I made this, but this is really delicious." I took a sip of the tea and shook my head in pleasure, pointing at the food. "This is Heaven, really?"

I took another bite and turned to find Jonathan's eyes on me. "I like the way you express it when you eat something delicious. And there's no way you make something from Camille's recipe, and it doesn't taste great. That's a fact." He also started eating.

I nodded slowly and took another bite of the cookie, ignoring the fact that his words had made me flustered. Why wouldn't he notice when he was my meal buddy?

We ate the rest of the meal in silence, save the occasional hums and sighs because the meal needed that.
