Chapter 41: Hospital Ward

The three boys moved through the dark, damp tunnels, their footsteps echoing faintly off the stone walls. The battle in the Chamber of Secrets had left them battered and exhausted, but there was still one last task: getting out of this accursed place. Ginny was still unconscious, cradled in Harry's arms as he carried her. Ron walked beside him, his face pale, and James trailed slightly behind, wand still clutched in his hand, eyes sharp for any lingering dangers.

Ron let out a shaky breath, breaking the silence. "It all would've been much simpler if Dumbledore was here."

James let out a dry chuckle. "Well, he was booted out by the board, last I heard."

Harry, adjusting his grip on Ginny, spoke with conviction. "He'll be back. I'm sure of it."

Ron muttered, "Let's hope so. Feels like everything's gone to hell since he left."

James rolled his shoulders, wincing slightly from the bruises he'd accumulated. "It's Dumbledore, Ron. He'll be back. The old man always has a way of turning things around."

That seemed to reassure Ron slightly, though he still cast a wary glance at Ginny. James knew the adrenaline from their battle was wearing off, and the reality of what had happened to his sister was probably sinking in.

As they finally reached the entrance of the Chamber, they clambered through the opening and stumbled back into Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. The ghost herself hovered above them, giggling in delight.

"Oh a shame , Harry, if you'd died, you could've stayed with me forever!" she cooed.

Harry, looking horrified, quickly muttered something about how he'd rather not, before the boys hurried out into the castle proper.

They made their way toward the infirmary, Ron visibly anxious, occasionally glancing down at Ginny as Harry carried her. James could feel the weight of exhaustion settling into his limbs, but he kept his mind focused. They had survived. That was what mattered.

When they finally reached the hospital wing, Madam Pomfrey gasped upon seeing them.

"My word! What have you boys gotten into now?" she exclaimed, rushing over to examine Ginny first. "This poor girl—she's ice cold!"

Harry said quickly. "We—we stopped it. The monster. The Heir of Slytherin. Everything."

Madam Pomfrey gave him a sharp look but wasted no time in bustling Ginny onto a bed, pulling out potions and a thick woolen blanket.

As she worked, Professor McGonagall stormed into the infirmary, her robes billowing behind her, her stern face a mixture of concern and barely concealed relief.

"What in Merlin's name—" she stopped abruptly, taking in the sight of them—bruised, bloodied, clothes covered in grime. Her eyes landed on Ginny and hear everything from james , and for a brief moment, her lips pressed into a thin line of worry before she schooled her features.

"That was incredibly reckless of you three," she said, her voice sharp.

Harry and Ron immediately shrank back, looking guilty. Even James tensed slightly.

Then, to their utter surprise, she sighed and added, "But… I am proud of you."

Harry and Ron blinked in shock before breaking into wide grins.

James smirked. "Didn't think we'd ever hear that from you, Professor."

McGonagall gave him a sharp look. "Don't get cheeky, Dawson. You're not off the hook yet."

She then turned serious again. "However, this was beyond reckless. For that, you three will be confined to your dormitories until I say otherwise. No wandering the castle, no sneaking out, no heroics. Understood?"

Harry and Ron nodded quickly. James gave a mock salute. "Aye, aye, Professor."

McGonagall narrowed her eyes at him before turning back to check on Ginny. James exchanged a glance with Ron and Harry, who both looked like they were about to collapse from exhaustion.

"Let's get some rest before she changes her mind and decides to dock points instead," James muttered, leading them toward the exit.

The next morning, they were woken early by the sounds of hushed whispers outside their dormitory. The castle was still buzzing from the events of the previous night, but James was more focused on his stiff limbs and aching muscles. Every movement reminded him of the fight, and he scowled slightly as he rubbed his shoulder.

Ron sat up groggily. "What's going on?"

Harry, already halfway dressed, was fastening his tie. "Dumbledore's back."

James straightened at that. "Well, that was fast."

Ron blinked blearily at Harry. "You sure?"

"Yeah. I got a message this morning—he wants to see me in his office."

James and Ron exchanged a glance.

"You want us to come?" James asked.

Harry hesitated, then shook his head. "I think he just wants to talk to me about the diary."

James nodded, watching as Harry left the dormitory, leaving Ron and him sitting on their beds.

For a few moments, neither spoke. Then Ron let out a heavy breath.

"Well," he muttered, rubbing his face, "at least things are looking up."

James stretched, wincing. "Yeah. Assuming we don't get detention for the rest of the year."

Ron groaned. "Don't even joke about that."

A few minutes later, Harry returned, looking visibly more relaxed than before.

"Well?" Ron asked. "What did he say?"

Harry grinned. "He said we've got nothing to worry about. Everything's taken care of."

James smirked. "Told you he'd sort things out."

Ron exhaled in relief, his shoulders slumping. "Thank Merlin." Then his eyes brightened. "Oi! Let's go check on Ginny and Hermione!"

James grinned, standing up. "Now that's the best idea you've had all week."

With that, the three of them made their way to the hospital wing, ready to reunite with their bushy-haired friend and finally put this whole nightmare behind them.
