Mage Kings Rise

Chapter 5: Lorne magic academy trals part 1

On the day we arrived, I could see the capital gates from afar and the giant city walls. It was like nothing I had ever seen. The were guards at all points of the wall, mages and archers on standby, it was truly captivating. But we had to wait for a long time to enter since there were huge queues. When we finally got into the city, I was amazed at how busy the city was, carts were moving in all directions there were stores everywhere and guards were patrolling the city. But we had no time to waste trying to travel through the cramped road so the cart was left at the inn we would be staying at as we made our way to the magical academy for the exams.

Marcus Wein

After awakening at the early age of ten I had gotten tutors to guide me in magic training. With my early awakening, my family had gotten a lot of fame. Now I was headed to the Lorne kingdom's magical academy for proper training in the art of magic and after my graduation, I could finally get a standing in the army and build my name and gain fame and power, I would be living the dream, or so I believed.

'I can't wait to see what this year brings us, I have a feeling some great talent is on its way.'

"Sir, applicants have begun arriving." Blake, my personal assistant, said, as he walked in.

"Send those who fit the requirements to the arena and ensure the young ones feel at home before the trials start," I instructed Blake.

'let the trials begin'

Aldin Randall

When we got to the academy we had to fill in some forms, and since Darvin fit into the criteria he was allowed to take part in the trials. We parted ways and proceeded back to the inn to wait for the test to end while Darvin proceeded to the Arena where their test would take place, to pass our time we decided to explore the city.

After days of travel, we had finally got to the capital. We proceeded to the academy, and after registering we went to the testing area. I could see a lot of children my age, most of them were nobles like me but amidst them were a few peasants.

'Do those little rats think that they could possibly compete with noble, its definite that their path is short, if they succeed and get into the academy then only hell awaits them.

First up was attribute manifestation, all applicants were required to at least be able to manifest their attributes to be able to proceed. Almost all the applicants were able to manifest their elements but the few that could not were immediately disqualified. Obviously, I had been able to bring out my fire, although impressive, I was outshined by another applicant who was double attributed, although rare these individuals would come out as strong and talented mages, the worst part was that he was a commoner.

The second test was a test of precision, targets were set up and we were meant to aim at them, most of the other applicants failed leading even more to be disqualified.

The third test was one of endurance, every applicant was required to manifest their element and maintain its form, I did my best but together with the remainder of the applicants could not beat the commoner who even had to be requested to stop. Hopefully, I would be able to shine in the next trial.

When I read the least I was pleased to see Marcus Wein among the contestants, among all the contestants I had high hopes in him but the results that were being witnessed shocked me, a commoner had been able to surpass him next was the battle and I couldn't wait to see what would happen.

Marcus Wein

When I came to, found myself in the school's infirmary. I had lost my battle against the commoner, but despite my loss I had been accepted into the academy for my outstanding performance in other fields. For my loss, anguish burned in me, the humiliation I had faced because of that peasant I would pay him back in full to quench my anger or so I thought.

Darvin Talor.

Before we came to the capital my mother had informed me of the darkness within the academy, noble would use commoners like trash and most of the tomes it would be ignored, to survive one had to be ready to fight with their life on the line.

When I had arrived I could clearly hear the venomous words that the nobles would spout but I simply ignored it and focused on the trials, next up was a test on combat ability, luckily I had been trained by Mr. Randall.

After getting grouped our battles partners had been assigned. Fortunately mine was last on the list. As I waited I watched the fights, what I realised was that that most of them had not focused on combat and would depend on thei magic failing to achieve the best of the battle.

When it was time for my battle I walked onto the stage. I was to face a red haired mage. When the battle was commenced he threw out a fire ball with his awful aim it easily missed. Using wind magic I propelled myself to get close to him, when I got in range I used water magic to freeze his feet to the ground. He rried to escape only to find out he was stuck to the ground. I used this opportunity to get behind him and with just enough knocked him out wining the battle.

For a few moments the entire arena was dead silent but then suddenly it erupted in cheers, when I looked around the entire arena was filled with mages. I was a bit confused considering that I, a commoner had beat a noble and was being cheered at.

I tried to head back but was stopped by the guards at the entrance had stopped me, other applicants also joined in. We all stood in the middle of the arena. An elderly man walked to the front of the podium.

"Welcome future mages, you have been accepted into Lorne academy. I am happy to have seen such talented young children. From this moment onwards only hardworking and devotion will set you all apart so get ready because your life at the academy depends solely on your strength."

With that short speech he left and we were escorted back to the academy entrance, where we met our families to part ways.

I bid my mother farewell and thanked the Randells for the opportunity they had given me. When it came to Aldin's turn he was a bit sad but we bid each other farewell.

Aldin Randell

I was happy that Darvin had gotten to join the academy but still sad that he had left, but now was no time to mope around I had to grow my magic if I wanted to join him in two years.

While at the magic academy, Darvin had grown in knowledge and power but still back home, Aldin had also been growing, he had gotten deep knowledge on his attributes and experience in using them as well. He had also improved his swordsmanship, which he learnt from his father. Out of boredom he had begun hunting beasts to gain experience.

After breakfast I left for the woods, I had some few spells I had theorised but had yet to implement. To test them out I would have to go to the woods not to destroy the house. After leaving the city walls I went running to the woods, this is what I would commonly do to increase my stamina. I headed to a clearing deep in the woods that was devoid of life due to my practice their that had left it barren.

Meanwhile in a separate location deep in the woods a group people. The had built a camp and were settling down. Thus would seem normal if not for the people in cages. They were bone thin and starving, every now and then groans would be heard from the cages and the awful smell that came from the cages.

Among the group Luke a young man was at the edge of the camp sharpening his knives, he seemed bored and was playing with a sharp blade. He would check his surroundings every now and then. He suddenly got up and walked to the woods, as he was headed there all the people in his path gave him way with their heads down.

Luke

'If I stay their any longer I'm going to die of boredom.' I thought to myself.

I am the vice leader of the wolf fangs, a group of mercenaries, we were currently dealing with a noble who wanted some slaves.

We had obtained them a month ago after raiding a village, but I could not have my fun with them and so I had to try my luck in the woods. Hopefully I would get some poor adventurer.
