Chapter 119: Hela To Medidate
"But he already hit..." Ruth protested unwillingly.
"So what? There was no extreme behavior, no serious consequences. It's the same outcome."
Luis said dismissively, "My eldest brother-in-law may not be much, but his parents have connections. Even if you try to escalate this, it's impossible."
"What? Is he still trying to use his connections to frame us?" Ruth slammed the table and stood up. Luis didn't say a word, just looked at her expressionlessly.
In the past, such behavior would have earned him at least a slap, but now Ruth was stunned, then hesitated with a guilty conscience.
Nancy even tugged at her mother's sleeve and said, "Mom, don't take your anger out on Brother-in-law. That's not good."
With this, Ruth found an excuse to sit back down, though still unwilling. "Son-in-law, what do you think we should do? You're the head of our household now. Give us your word."
"No matter how much you escalate this, it won't become a big deal."
"Even if you involve my father-in-law, who has some connections, it's still the same. This is just a trivial matter."
Hearing this, both mother and daughter hesitated. Involving Arthur was out of the question, their relationship was already in name only. Even if he showed up, he'd likely do the bare minimum.
After this, the mother and daughter looked at Luis with even more tenderness and eagerness, because they knew he wasn't a cold or indifferent person.
Despite suffering so much humiliation as a live-in son-in-law, he was actually financially independent. Yet, he remained gentle and attentive to his wife, fully embracing his role and doting on her in every way.
No sweet talk, no empty promises just genuine affection reflected in the details of everyday life.
Both mother and daughter had a strange thought: What did Lily do to deserve this? Even as a mother who should be happy for her daughter, Ruth couldn't shake this nagging feeling.
In their eyes, Lily was still the ugly girl before her systematic transformation, while the son-in-law was gentle, considerate, handsome, well-built, and now wealthy.
Despite the inappropriate tensions, the son-in-law behaved impeccably at home, treating his mother-in-law and everyone else with utmost respect. There was simply no fault to find with him.
Nancy grew angry at the comparison, while Ruth felt particularly guilty. Even though nothing physical had happened between her and the son-in-law, she suddenly felt her daughter was unworthy of him.
Just as Luis was thinking about how to quickly resolve this nonsense, the System's voice rang in his mind:
"Ding... System Quest: The Tall and Sexy Sister-in-Law side quest triggered. Easter egg unlocked. Use blind box to obtain exclusive skill."
"Sister-in-Law Side Quest (Fuck Your Mother), generating (extremely fast)."
Luis was completely baffled. What the hell kind of mission was this? The sister-in-law's derivative mission was just the mother-in-law.
But right now, Luis truly had no time to ponder this, because Ruth grabbed his hand and demanded, "Son-in-law, in this matter, are we really just going to have to accept that we're at a loss??"
Nancy's resentment had clearly diminished quite a bit, but Ruth's shrewish nature was evident, if she didn't come out on top, she considered it a loss. She was truly trouble.
This was the immediate issue that needed handling. Luis thought for a moment and asked, "Sister, you've been here a while, do you know the name of that police officer?"
"No, I don't!"
"His name is Gasle. I know him. If you don't believe me, you can go down and see for yourself later."
Luis said casually, "Mom, do you want to handle how this gets resolved, or should I take care of it?"
There was almost a tone of pressure in his words, if you, as the elder, want to handle it, then I'll step back. But if you trust me to deal with it, then don't you dare spout nonsense.
This was already stern enough, but it had no effect on a shrew. Knowing exactly what kind of person his mother-in-law was, Luis's words weren't much of a reassurance.
"Son-in-law, then what should we do?"
"Let it cool…"
Luis said bluntly, "In matters like this, between husband and wife, it's all about smoothing things over. There's no injury assessment by criminal standards, so it's hard to say anything definitive."
"Daniel's family definitely has connections. I called in some favors too, but this matter is too minor to cause any real stir."
The moment Ruth heard this, she exploded. "So what? My eldest daughter was just bullied for nothing?"
Normally, in this situation, Nancy would have erupted too. Mother and daughter would play off each other, a veritable shrew-PLUS level force.
Luis simply continued smoking, adding lightly, "Mom, if you're handling this, I'll take my leave then, alright?"
Dealing with this type of shrew required no reasoning, no attempts at being understanding or polite. The more submissive you were, the less say you had. Honestly, Ruth was indeed fierce, but she still had a good sense of perception.
Seeing Luis getting a little angry, Ruth backed down. "I just feel it's unfair for your elder sister."
Luis instinctively glanced at Nancy. Somehow, his sister-in-law still lacked the presence his mother-in-law had. His mother-in-law was already known for her ferocity at Nancy's age.
If this had happened to Ruth, and Daniel had dared to lay a hand on her, at the very least his face would have been clawed to shreds, not like Nancy, who ran away first and then called the police.
"Mom, matters between husband and wife aren't easy to judge. Don't waste energy thinking about putting Daniel behind bars, it's not happening."
Ruth was no longer assertive in front of her second son-in-law. Nancy thought it over and said softly, "Mom, I don't think it's realistic either. Let's just let brother-in-law decide. After all, making a scene here isn't a good look."
Luis added, "Mom, you head back first. I'll handle this."
"Fine. I'll go complain to your mother-in-law later, what right does she have…"
Though still fuming, Ruth actually listened and left first. As she went, she glanced around sneakily, as if trying to spot where Daniel was so she could curse him out thoroughly.
Gasle came over as well, smiling. "Your mother-in-law is here too. Let's talk first."
It suddenly dawned on Luis, the side mission unlocked through the sister-in-law quest… could it be referring to Daniel's mother? Damn, that was almost too thoughtful.
Knowing that Ruth had left cursing and grumbling, Gasle found himself looking at Luis with even more approval. Damn, if only he had someone this sharp under his command.
Both sides had sent middle-aged women. When Gasle heard Daniel's mother was coming too, cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
This kind of situation was practically classic at the police station. Mothers were usually protective of their kids, no matter who was right or wrong, they'd show up furious.
Especially since Ruth clearly wasn't the reasonable type, and upon hearing Daniel was an only son well, that meant his mother probably wasn't someone to mess with either.
This wasn't just Mars hitting Earth, it was worse. Thankfully, Luis had sent Ruth away beforehand. If the two had met, who knows how things would've escalated.
The door opened. A well-fitted dress accentuated her figure and air of elegance. Her wavy long hair was tied up simply and neatly. She carried a designer bag, everything about her screamed upper class.
Her features were sharp, her eyes large and lively. Light makeup enhanced her refined appearance. She might not be stunningly gorgeous, but she was undoubtedly a captivating beauty with enduring charm.
Time hadn't left her weathered; instead, it had bestowed a mature, alluring elegance.
Daniel's mother, Hela, was also a great beauty. Standing next to Nancy, she not only held her own but exuded even more mature femininity.
Truth be told, that bastard Daniel might be a piece of work, but he did have that slick, pretty-boy look clearly inherited from his mother. But Hela knew how to present herself better, always leaving a striking impression.
Ruth had charm and beauty too, but she wasn't as skilled at styling. Combined with that elite, sophisticated aura, Hela was absolutely a top-tier stunner who could make anyone's pulse race.
"Mom!"
Nancy stood up immediately.
Hela had a powerful presence. She walked in, sat down gracefully, and greeted with a smile, "My brother-in-law is here too. I heard my mother-in-law was here earlier."
"I asked her to head back first!"
Luis said offhandedly, "It's not a big deal between the young couple. It's not good for parents to get too involved when emotions are high."
"How sensible. I feel the same way!"
Hela was slightly taken aback, then smiled gracefully and stroked Nancy's cheek. "That idiot, how could he raise a hand against his own gorgeous wife? He really needs to be taught a lesson. If his father weren't out of town, he'd be getting a beating right now."
As an only child, Daniel was thoroughly spoiled by Hela, a classic case of "a loving mother spoils the son."
But regardless, her verbal stance was clear. Then Hela asked another question: "I've been getting calls lately saying you owe money. What's going on?"
The question made Nancy nervous. She immediately said, "It's scam calls. Ignore them."
"But the harassment is getting out of hand."
Hela thought for a moment and said, "In this matter, Daniel was wrong. No matter what, he shouldn't have resorted to violence. I apologize on his behalf."
"We're all family. There's no need to make a scene here. Why don't you stay at your parents' place for a few days to cool off?"
