Chapter 9: The path of a witcher
They all started running for their lives as the monsters chased after them. One of the griffins leaped and pounced on one of the human boys, in one go it tore the boy into two halves and another griffin joined him in devouring the boy.
Luisa couldn't believe what she was seeing, what sort of a death test was this or were the witchers and mages messing with their minds.
The process when she was looking over her shoulders at the boy that was being devoured by the griffins, she tripped over a log of fallen tree and a ghoul appeared before her.
She shook in fear as she moved backwards, the ghoul was about to launch at her when a long stick pierced into its chest, pushing the heart out of its place. The ghoul fell to its kneels and Davis appeared in Luisa's view. "Don't just sit there looking pretty," he said and offered her his hand, she took it and stood up. "Thanks," she replied.
"And heads up, want to kill a ghoul, struck it by the heart," he highlighted.
"Any heads up on the griffins?" she inquired and blood splash on her face as a tentimenea, another type of monster, pierced through the back of Davis' head coming out through his mouth. She moved backwards in shock, the creature began to drag him to itself.
"Davis!" she shouted helplessly as she herself was too afraid to go near the thing.
"Luisa...Luisa look at me," Heron shook her.
"Snap out of it, this' not the time to get distracted," he warned.
"Let's go, okay?" he added and they turned forward to the others and started running.
"Ahhhh!" Heron yelp as the vine demon, ratinja, captured him with her vines and started dragging him away.
Luisa rushed towards him, "Heron, no?!" she called.
"Let him go you filthy vine whore!" she yelled.
"Luisa! Stay back, go! Save yourself!" Heron said terrified. Terrified at the thought of what might happen to her if one of those monsters get hold of her.
"No...No, I won't leave you. We're family and family don't leave family behind," she replied and continued to run after them.
Heron's eyes fell on Gideon and that one look spoke a lot in few seconds. Gideon has always seem to despise them but that wasn't really what he felt deep down.
With the time he has spent with all of them, he has come to understand that they should always have each other's back, no matter what.
He rushed towards Luisa, with his vampire speed he was able to catch up with her on time. He grabbed her, carried her on his shoulder and started running to the opposite direction.
"What? You f*cking vampire!" she cursed for the first time.
"Let go of me this instant, you idiot!" she bit into his shoulder but Gideon was able to bear the pain of it.
"Please, take her away from here, you guys should get the hell out of here and promise me you won't let her die, Gideon?" Heron pleaded grabbing a tree bark to buy some more time before his demise.
Gideon looked back; "I promise" He said
"Heron no, you idiot?!" Luisa cried. She stopped biting Gideon, tears walked down her cheeks in pain.
Heron smiled at her; "Law of surprise, huh?"
Luisa watched as the griffins, the ghouls and some other monsters cut off the vines and started tearing him apart.
...
Luisa cuddled her kneels, her back rested on a tree bark. They managed to get away from the monsters and the remaining four of them sat at the dry part of the ground.
An awful silence hung in the air, what they had just experienced was dreadful. The ripping apart reminded Luisa of what the vampires did to her clan. She gritted her teeth in internal agony as her fists clenched, gripping her trouser kneels.
She felt helpless and almost blamed herself for not doing anything. All she always did was to stand, cry and do nothing...But all that was going to change.
"I don't understand, it's supposed to be just a test, but why...Why does it feel real? Maybe it's some sort of dream or something?" one of the boys broke the silence.
Luisa's head shut up, her eyes glaring daggers at him, if looks could kill, the boy would have been dead by now.
"Davis, Curt...H-Heron, all dead and you call this a dream!" she yelled in anger, right now she was angry at everything.
Angry at the boy, angry at the witchers and mages for their extreme trainings, but she was warned wasn't she and she knew what she was getting into but she didn't know she would get this attached to some people, some things and now that she was losing them, it hurts badly.
She was angry at the vampires that attacked her clan, by now she would have been at home or at the village market with her mother, maybe a couple of siblings by now enjoying her life but here she was in this God forsaken swamp.
"But...I really do hope it's a dream, I hope it's just a nightmare and I hope to wake up soon," she added in a much calmer voice, the tears continued to trail down her cheeks.
"What do they really want from us?" the other boy questioned.
"They want killers, fearless warriors who aren't afraid of anything not even death and that's why they would go this far to expose us to such gore to produce the best fighters.
"They don't need any loose ends or weakling or someone that is too emotional and selfless. What they need is people who are bereaved of any form of emotion that can serve as a setback.
"People who can fearlessly kill any monster and fill their pockets with gold and precious valuables," Gideon responded.
"I guess what the public say about them is true. They are all scumbags that shouldn't have come into existence if not for that stupid sorceress.
"Heron sacrificed himself, he allowed all the monsters attention to be on him only, so that we could get away safely and what Heron did there...Was selfless and heroic indeed.
"Maybe the witchers should start teaching that instead of only how to be strong and fearless. It's not always about how to kill for money and survive on your own. If not for the fact that we kill just monsters, we're almost like trained assassins," Luisa responded.
"Hmm, and that's why he died. The witchers don't need any thing of such, they only save people who are in trouble with the monsters and for money.
"The path of a witcher is bloody and selfish and the only thing they care about is their survival and whether you like it or not...You are about to become that scumbag," Gideon continued.
"You risked your life to go after me, you could have just left but you didn't. Is a fellow witcher an exemption?" she asked and they both held each other's gaze.
The glowing of their medallions was what ended the staring contest.
"I guess resting time is over," one of the boys lamented and they all stood up.
Another set of monsters came into view, the ghouls were still there but a sea of monsters that looked like dead corpses draw onto them.
"Let's split into two groups. Luisa?, you're with me," Gideon suggested and so they split up.
Gideon and Luisa started running as the monsters chased after them and there came the nightmare of the forest. It appeared in front of them, this was the second time she had come across this sinful creature.
She gritted her teeth at the ugly sight of the creature, its loud ear piercing scream filled the air. All the monsters halted at their pace as if they had just met a superior, they started backing off.
"Luisa, go I'll stall it till you get away," Gideon said and Luisa started running away from there. Gideon began to battle with the creature, his strength was no match compared to this creature.
The creature pierced its bony fingers at Gideon abdomen, blood flowed out of his mouth and the spot. His face contour in pain, this was it, his journey ends here.
He fell to his kneels, the creature didn't let go one bit. At least, not until its heart was struck out of its chest. The creature fell down and died without a single sound.
"Luisa?" Gideon voiced in surprise.
Luisa just couldn't leave him behind, he might be an asshole and a vampire, one of the creatures she despises but her conscience just wouldn't let her leave him behind.
She came back, took a long and sharp stick that looked like a spear and she came at the creature through the back when it was distracted then she pierced through its back to the chest. It was the first time she ever killed anything.
She helped the injured Gideon stand up, crossing his hand across her shoulders to give him support.
"You came back for me...Thank you," he appreciated and their medallions glowed again.
"Let's go," she said and they started walking away as fast as they could.
The ghouls and corpses were back, they ran after the young witchers in great speed and the two of them walked as fast as possible but it was almost difficult for them as Gideon was injured.
"Luisa? Just go, leave me here. I'm just a liability and we'll both get killed," Gideon pleaded and Luisa shook her head.
"You know I won't and...I can't do that, so just shut up and run," she replied. They continued until they reached a dead end. They looked down at the cliff in front of them and at the monsters that were fast approaching.
...
