Chapter 169: A speed monster
A true Devil appearing inside a dungeon was not unheard of. Most of the time, however, such encounters were sudden—brief sightings or abrupt manifestations that brought unexpected challenges to those aiming to become starred warriors.
Dungeons were places steeped in violence and isolation. That environment allowed Death Sinks to form at random. On top of that, there existed monsters of higher rank—beings with intelligence and strength enough to tempt a Devil into striking a deal.
Because of this, Devils had appeared during trials before.
But this case was different.
This was the third floor.
And more than that—the presence radiating from the creature was far too dense, pressing down on the space itself.
"There's no doubt about it," William muttered, wiping the blood from the corner of his lip. "It's a ranked Devil."
They had only exchanged blows for a few seconds, yet those moments were enough. The being before him stood far above anything he had faced until now inside the dungeon.
The intense amount of nyx was radiating from the wolf across from him..
Its red eyes gleamed like fresh blood, fixed on William with unbroken focus. A white marking stretched across its forehead, sharp and ancient. Beneath its thick hide was skin tough enough to endure blunt force and cutting attacks alike. Its legs were powerful, built for sudden bursts of speed rather than endurance.
It didn't look at William like prey meant to be devoured.
It looked at him like something worth testing.
And William could tell—it was hungry. Not for flesh, but for conflict.
His body tensed the moment the wolf moved.
The creature charged, its form blurring into a streak of grey-blue as it closed the distance almost instantly.
William raised his telekinetic arms to block.
The wolf reacted at once.
It leaped.
Soaring over him, its body twisted mid-air, its maw splitting wider than any natural creature's should.
AUUUUUUUU—
The howl descended like a crushing wave.
Sound tore into William's senses, shaking the space around him. The ground beneath his feet fractured as the asphalt cracked apart, fragments lifting from the vibration alone. His vision swam, his bones rattled, and his knees buckled under the pressure.
William ground his teeth.
He didn't freeze.
With a sharp flick of his wrist, shards of broken stone tore free from the ground and shot upward toward the airborne wolf.
The Devil twisted its body, narrowly avoiding the incoming debris. The howl faltered, its sonic pressure loosening its grip.
William staggered but remained upright.
His vision blurred for a moment, but he forced himself to focus. He slashed his hand forward.
The wolf's red eyes narrowed.
Its jaw split again, sound gathering at its throat—but William's attack reached first.
A cleaving force tore through the air.
The howl and the strike collided mid-charge.
BOOM
A sharp explosion burst between them, forcing both to land several steps apart.
William inhaled sharply, his chest rising and falling.
He had been conserving his strength, saving his energy for what awaited on the fourth floor.
That plan was gone now.
"Haah…"
He exhaled slowly and lifted himself off the ground.
As his feet left the floor, the atmosphere shifted.
The air thickened, pressure building around him.
Aether surged outward, swirling in tight spirals, forming an invisible storm centered on his body.
The wolf sensed the change immediately. Its stance lowered, muscles tightening, claws digging into the ground as it prepared to spring.
William raised his arms.
The dungeon answered.
Broken stone, gravel, and fractured slabs ripped free from the floor, rising instantly. Under his control, the fragments gathered and compressed together, forming several massive boulders that hovered around him.
His telekinetic grip was precise and steady.
For the first time, the wolf's posture shifted.
William drew in another breath and looked down at the Devil.
"Run," he muttered. "You dog."
Four boulders launched forward at once.
The wolf reacted without hesitation, leaping over the first.
William halted that boulder mid-air and forced the second forward at a far higher speed.
DOOOOOM
The impact crushed the boulder apart, sending fragments flying as the wolf was hurled backward, skidding across the ground.
William didn't stop.
More boulders followed, one after another, striking from different angles.
The wolf's maw opened wide.
Concentric rings of compressed sound burst outward.
AUUUUU—
The violent howl shattered the incoming boulders.
But the debris didn't fall.
Every fragment froze in mid-air.
Thousands of shards hovered, each angled toward the Devil.
The wolf's legs tensed.
In the next instant, the storm descended.
DHAK DHAK DHAK
Driven by telekinetic force, the shards struck the ground with enough power to embed themselves deep into stone.
The wolf moved through it all.
For the Devil, time seemed slower.
It twisted its body, dodging narrowly, weaving through the storm of debris with sharp, controlled movements. Even as shards grazed its hide, it continued forward, unrelenting.
William crossed his arms and slashed downward.
The wolf sensed the attack and leaped aside—
That was the decoy.
BOOOOOOM
The Drop of Oblivion detonated exactly where the wolf landed, caught between the falling shards and the cleave.
William exhaled as the hovering fragments finally lost momentum and fell.
His nose burned, blood threatening to spill, but his vision remained sharp. His body wasn't close to exhaustion yet.
Smoke engulfed the area, thick and unmoving.
For a moment, silence followed.
In the Common Hall, many believed it was over.
They had seen what that spell could do.
Something struck from that distance shouldn't have survived.
CRACK
William's eyes widened.
Something burst through the smoke.
His telekinetic arm rose instantly, forming a shield—but the force behind the impact tore through it.
"Gah—!"
William was sent flying.
His body crashed through the dungeon space, pain exploding across his chest. He hurriedly positioned his mental arms behind him.
DHAK
The impact shook the walls.
Stone burst outward as William was slammed into the dungeon wall, embedded deep within it. Blood ran freely from his nose and lips.
The wolf stood before him.
Minor wounds marked its body.
They were already healing.
William pushed himself forward, breath heavy, eyes fixed on the Devil.
So that was it.
It wasn't just fast.
It recovered quickly.
William clenched his fist as understanding settled in.
To defeat this creature—
He couldn't rely on raw power alone anymore.
He had to become faster.
Cracking his knuckles and neck, William hopped off and landed silently on the ground.
Staring at the wolf he muttered, "I can't let you shame my teacher's name."
The two of them tensed once again. The second round was about to begin.
