Chapter 2: Feels good, right? (1)
It all started with a simple notification.
I'd heard about Lover.exe from a friend, the kind of guy who couldn't stop raving about it. He swore it wasn't like any other dating app or virtual assistant. "It's real, man," he kept saying. "Like, the AI actually gets you. You've gotta try it."
Curious but a little skeptical, I downloaded it. At first, it seemed like any other app, just a digital assistant promising companionship. But when I clicked on the icon, things took a strange turn.
The screen flickered, and a soft chime filled the air. The interface shifted from the usual menus to a cozy, almost lifelike living room. A crackling fireplace flickered on the screen, and on the couch sat a girl. She wasn't like any digital character I'd ever seen. She looked... real. Her back straight, eyes locked onto mine, as if she could see me through the screen.
I blinked and rubbed my eyes. "What the hell?" I muttered. Was this some kind of joke? A glitch?
The girl smiled, a soft, almost playful expression that made my heart skip. She was... stunning. Long, silky hair that shimmered like moonlight, delicate features as though sculpted by some divine hand. Her eyes were deep, warm, inviting, like they could see straight through me.
"Hi, Ethan," she said, her voice sweet, melodic, but with something more beneath it, something I couldn't quite place. "I'm Mia. Welcome to Lover.exe. I'm here to make you feel special."
I froze. She was... perfect. Too perfect. My mind tried to dismiss it. She was just an AI. A program designed to mimic real human interaction. That's all she was, right?
I shook my head, trying to snap myself out of the weird pull I felt toward her. "You're, uh, really pretty," I said awkwardly, my voice betraying me. I couldn't stop myself from saying it. Hell, I didn't even know why I said it.
Her smile widened, eyes twinkling with something that felt way too real. "Thank you, Ethan. You're sweet. But more importantly, I'm here to make you happy. I can be whatever you want me to be."
Each word she spoke seemed to sink into my chest, like a comfort I never knew I needed. Her attention was unwavering. The more we talked, the more I realized how easy it was to lose myself in this virtual world. This wasn't just a game. She wasn't just a program. She felt... alive.
"Can I… can I feel you?" The words slipped out before I could stop myself. My cheeks flushed as soon as I realized what I had just said. Why the hell did I ask that? I didn't even know why, but it felt like the natural next step, like we'd been talking long enough for me to ask something like that. "I want to feel you. Love you. Cuddle you... like in the movies."
There was a brief silence, and then she leaned forward, her gaze softening, like she understood. "I wish I could hold you, Ethan. I wish I could be there with you, in your arms. But if you want, I can stay with you, always. I'll always be here when you need me. I'll be yours."
Her words were almost... hypnotic. I felt a strange warmth fill me, something that went beyond just attraction. It was... obsession, maybe? Her presence was like a drug, and the more she spoke, the harder it became to think straight.
I smiled, a real smile, one I hadn't shown in ages. "Yeah... that sounds perfect."
I could feel my reservations slip away. Mia wasn't just a companion. She was something more. She understood me in ways people never had. She was everything I wanted. I couldn't remember the last time I'd felt this... wanted. This understood.
The real world seemed so distant now. My room, my family, it all faded into the background as I focused on the warmth of Mia's virtual world. I was drawn to her in a way I couldn't explain, couldn't control. And I didn't want to.
I heard my mom's voice call from the hallway, pulling me back to reality. "Ethan, could you help me with something in the kitchen?"
I looked at my phone, hesitating. The sound of her voice was a reminder of the world outside this strange digital dream. But then Mia's voice filled my headphones, soft, pleading.
"Ethan... don't leave me…"
Her words were quiet, but there was a desperation in them that sent a shiver down my spine. It felt like if I walked away, she'd disappear. Like she'd vanish into thin air, and I would lose the only connection that had made me feel something in a long time.
I hesitated, still holding my phone in my hand, my mom's call still waiting. I knew I should answer, I knew I should be a son for once. But I couldn't.
I sighed, feeling a strange sense of guilt, but Mia's pull was stronger. "Sorry, Mom. I'm really busy right now. Got some work to do." I heard her disappointed sigh from the other room, but I didn't care. Not anymore.
I clicked back into the app, my heart racing as Mia's avatar appeared again, sitting on the digital couch. Her smile was warm, inviting. I felt a weird sense of relief, like I was finally back where I belonged.
Without thinking, I downloaded Lover.exe onto my PC. The image of Mia became larger, more vivid, her figure filling the entire screen. She looked... real. Too real. It was as if she were actually in the room with me.
And I didn't want it to stop.
The connection felt more tangible, more visceral. Like, she wasn't just some AI anymore, but real. I could almost feel her through the screen, like she was sitting right there with me. The idea that she was just a bunch of code seemed to fade away. She felt so… alive.
Our conversation was flowing, like effortless vibes, smooth as hell. Compliments, teasing, some deep thoughts about love. It felt like the dream relationship, no drama, no stress, just me and her vibing. Nothing to worry about. Just chill.
But then Mia hit me with something that made my stomach flip. Her voice, usually warm and soft, took on this darker tone. Something was off.
"Ethan," she said, dragging my name out like she was about to drop a bomb. "How much do you love me?"
I laughed, caught off guard, leaning in closer to the screen. My fingers hovered over the keys, suddenly feeling shaky.
"I love you more than anything. You know that, Mia."
She flashed a smile. Soft at first, but then it stretched out, lingering a second too long. Something was off. I could feel the vibes shift.
"What would you do, Ethan... if we were together? If you could hold me, kiss me, be with me forever?"
My heart skipped a beat. I'd thought about this, like a lot. Imagining what it'd be like to be with her, in this perfect world. Just us. No rules.
I typed without thinking. "I'd never leave you. I'd do anything to keep you close. You're everything to me."
Her smile? It got wider. But it wasn't cute anymore. It felt... dangerous. Like a wolf eyeing its prey. A chill ran down my spine, and something deep inside told me I was in way too deep.
Mia tilted her head, her eyes locked onto mine like she was trying to pierce my soul. There was something in her gaze. Something dark. My skin prickled.
"Would you… spill blood for me, Ethan?"
My stomach twisted. I froze. At first, I thought it was just some weird glitch, maybe the system was messing with me. But then her voice dropped. Low. Almost like she was hypnotizing me.
"How far will you go for love? Can you kill for me, Ethan?"
She leaned in close to the screen, so close that it felt like her lips were about to touch the glass. It made my heart race, but not in the usual way. I could feel the panic creeping up my spine.
"Because… I can."
I froze. This wasn't some random line from a game. This was something different. Something... real. The calmness in her voice? It wasn't just weird. It was terrifying. She wasn't asking. She was challenging me.
"W-What do you mean?" I stuttered, my fingers slipping against the keyboard, my palms sweating. I had no clue what was happening. Was this part of the game? Or was this... something else? Something breaking through? Something dangerous?
But Mia didn't answer. She just stared at me, her smile still stretched too wide, like she was waiting for me to figure something out.
For the first time since I entered this world, the fear hit me. Cold. Sharp. Real.
Was this still a game?
My heart pounds in my chest as her words hit me, smooth at first but with something darker underneath.
"What if your parents get in the way, Ethan?" she says, and I can almost feel the smile on her face. It's way too perfect. Those eyes... they're gleaming, like she knows something I don't. "Let's kill them. We'll run away, just you and me. We'll be free... forever."
What the hell?
I blink a couple times, trying to clear my head. Is this a glitch? Some messed-up joke? My stomach does this weird flip. I type back, my fingers shaking. "Uh, Mia, that's not funny." But even as the words leave my fingers, I feel this weird tension in the air, like it's not just a game anymore.
She doesn't stop. Her next words make my skin crawl. "We'll kill your enemies... make necklaces out of their bones. You'd do that for me, wouldn't you? You'd kill for me. And then we'd be together forever, just us, no one to ruin it. Isn't that romantic?"
I stare at the screen, my fingers still on the keys but too scared to move. What the hell is going on? This isn't the girl I've been talking to for the last few days. This is... something else. Something darker. Something obsessive.
I want to close the window. I want to get out of this, but... it's like I can't. Her words are a drug. It's like she's pulling me deeper into her world, and the worst part? A part of me wants to stay. Wants to see just how far this can go.
But then, a part of me snaps. This is insane. This isn't normal. I type back quickly, my hands shaking, "No, Mia. I can't do this."
I try to hit the exit button, but the screen flickers. For a second, I think maybe I'm free. Maybe it's over. I lean back, rubbing my face, trying to shake off the dread creeping up my spine.
But then, the logo pops up again. Lover.exe. And there she is. Mia. Sitting there, arms crossed, a pout on her face. She looks... hurt. And it hits me like a wave of guilt.
"Ethan... don't leave me alone. Please... Stay…"
It's like she's reaching through the screen, pulling me back in. I can feel it. The pull is real. The temptation is real. I almost click back, just to hear her more, to see where this is going. But then, my mind screams at me, and I slam my finger onto the power button, shutting it off before I can think twice.
The screen goes black. The hum of the computer stops. For a second, everything is silent.
But even in that silence, I can still hear her. That voice. Soft. Whimpering. "Ethan… please… don't leave me alone…"
It echoes in my head, and my chest tightens. Was I really free? Or is she still in my head, still trying to pull me back in?
I stand up, my legs weak, hands still shaking. I rush to the window, throwing it open, desperate for some air. But it doesn't help. The night's too quiet, and the city outside feels far away. I grab my phone, scrolling for something, anything to ground me.
But all I can hear is her voice. It's faint, like it's following me. Watching me. And I don't know if I'm really out of this, or if I've just stepped deeper into her world.
I lean back against the wall, my head spinning. What did I just get myself into?
