Chapter 536: Freedom
Luke kept staring at Sherda Karl, unable to detect any clear signs of lying. If his words were true, then Latifa Gallo should have been killed after he left.
This point coincides with the testimony of Latifa Gallo's daughter, Teresa Lewis.
Luke focused his questions on the timeline, "What time did you arrive at Latifa Gallo's house?"
Sherda Karl thought for a moment, "Maybe it was between 3:40 and 3:50, I can't quite remember."
"When did you leave?"
"4:10."
"Was there anyone else at Latifa Gallo's house during that time?"
"No."
"Did anyone contact Latifa Gallo?"
"No."
"Think carefully, we need you to provide clues about who killed Latifa Gallo."
"I really don't know, it was my first time robbing a warden's house, I was nervous as hell, felt like my brain went numb."
"Did you take the surveillance from Latifa Gallo's house?"
"What surveillance? Did her house have surveillance? I don't know."
"Have you seen the golf club at Latifa Gallo's house?"
"No, I'm not interested in that stuff. Only old men play that. I prefer something more competitive, like basketball.
I'm really good at basketball, almost made the school team in high school."
Luke wasn't interested in his high school tales, continuing to ask, "Are you sure you left Latifa Gallo's house by 4:10?"
"Yes."
"And after leaving Latifa Gallo's house?"
"I drove off."
Luke didn't like this guy, but his words held some credibility. Previously, Luke had also checked the community surveillance around Latifa Gallo's house but didn't find Sherda Karl's car.
The reason was simple: Sherda Karl's departure was not during the time of the crime.
The police estimated Latifa Gallo's time of death to be between 4:30 and 6:00 PM.
Of course, the time of death doesn't equal the time of the crime, which could have been earlier. In general circumstances, 4:10 would still fall within the police's investigation range.
But one clue led the police to pinpoint the crime time to after 4:40.
This clue came from Latifa Gallo's daughter, Teresa Lewis. According to Teresa Lewis's testimony, she took the school bus home at 4:20, everything was normal at home, and Latifa Gallo had not been attacked. Afterward, she had a minor quarrel with Latifa Gallo, and left home around 4:40.
According to Teresa Lewis's statement, Latifa Gallo hadn't been attacked by 4:40, so naturally, the perpetrator wouldn't have left. This misled the police's judgment of the crime time and caused issues in checking suspect vehicles.
Matthew had also reviewed Latifa Gallo's house surveillance. Sherda Karl's Chevrolet did indeed enter the victim's community at 3:46 and left at 4:12, consistent with his testimony, which indicates Latifa Gallo had already been attacked.
Teresa Lewis lied.
In fact, Teresa Lewis had a window of opportunity for the crime, but because she was Latifa Gallo's daughter and still young, the police didn't consider her a suspect.
Now, she lied.
Neither age nor the mother-daughter relationship could shield her.
Subsequently, Luke arranged tasks, on one hand, to have Teresa Lewis detained, and on the other hand, to find more evidence to either rule out Teresa Lewis's suspicion of the crime or convict her.
Luke reviewed the course of the case, assuming Teresa Lewis was the killer. She should have seen Latifa Gallo tied up after returning home.
She and Latifa Gallo clashed, killing Latifa Gallo and taking away the murder evidence and a pinhole camera.
Her subsequent whereabouts were important, she should have been hiding the criminal evidence, then returned home at 6 to report the case.
Luke refocused the investigation on Teresa Lewis's whereabouts from 4:40 to 6:00, clarifying her actions during this time might reveal some key evidence.
The suspect might lie to the police to cover evidence, but typical lies contain both truth and falsehood to deceive the police.
If the suspect spouts baseless nonsense, the police would easily see through it.
Luke reviewed Teresa Lewis's statement again, according to her, she left home at 4:40 and arranged to meet a classmate at the nearby community park.
Teresa Lewis's classmate and the community park also became the focus of the police's investigation.
...
The next day.
Robbery and Murder Department, lounge.
Alec Wyatt looked a bit uneasy in the familiar lounge, standing up, pacing back and forth.
In the morning, he received a call from the police, stating there was a new development in his wife's case, instructing him to bring his stepdaughter, Teresa Lewis, to the station.
He didn't know what the police were up to this time, but he always felt the police were looking at him oddly.
"Hey, dad, can you stop pacing? You're making me dizzy."
"Okay, sweetheart." Alec Wyatt responded, ready to say something when the lounge door swung open.
Luke, Jackson, and Xiao Hei walked into the lounge.
Alec Wyatt stood up again, "Captain Li, how is the case investigation going?"
"Not bad, we have already found the killer of your wife."
"Thank you, thank you so much." Alec Wyatt's expression was complicated, and he pressed, "Why did that person kill my wife?"
"Why don't you ask her yourself? Maybe you already know."
Alec Wyatt spread his hands, "What do you mean? You don't still suspect me of being involved in my wife's death, do you!"
Luke stared at Alec Wyatt, "Do you really not know who the killer is?"
"I swear, I really don't know. Who exactly killed my wife?"
Luke pointed to Teresa Lewis, "It was her."
Alec Wyatt followed Luke's finger, looked, and said in shock, "Come on, you can't be joking."
"Why don't you ask her yourself?"
Alec Wyatt stared at his stepdaughter, "Teresa, what's going on?"
Teresa Lewis shrugged, "It's simple. They can't catch the killer who murdered mom, so they're trying to frame me."
Alec Wyatt breathed a sigh of relief and said to Luke, "Captain Li, I have a lot of respect for you.
But please take back what you just said, such an accusation is too heavy for a child.
Her mother is dead, how could she be the killer."
Luke said, "According to our investigation, she is the only one who went to the house during the time of the crime."
Alec Wyatt argued, "I also went to the house, it was obviously a robbery scene.
Teresa went to the park with her classmates after coming home; it must have been then that someone broke in for the robbery."
"No, according to our investigation, the robbery had already happened before Teresa got home, at which time Latifa Gallo had already been tied up by the perpetrator.
Teresa killed Latifa Gallo and then went out to play."
Teresa Lewis's eyes were red, and she cried out, "How can you do this to me, the dead was my mother, and you actually say I'm the killer, how could I possibly kill my own mother.
You are simply crazy."
Alec Wyatt also showed a furious expression, "Captain Li, please take back that accusation, or I'll have to call in a lawyer."
"Shut up, just stay out of it quietly." Luke scolded, looking at Teresa Lewis across, "We found your classmate, he admitted to playing with you on the day of the crime.
According to him, you met at five o'clock and parted at five fifty.
If you left the house at four forty, you only had twenty minutes to hide the murder evidence.
So, I suspect the location where you hid the evidence isn't far, very likely in the community park.
I sent someone with a police dog to investigate the park, and indeed found some items, do you want to see?"
Teresa Lewis's face turned pale, her lips trembling violently.
Alec Wyatt looked at his stepdaughter, "Teresa, what is he saying? Tell me, your mother's death had nothing to do with you."
"I gave you a chance."
Luke waited a moment and then took a transparent bag from his side, containing a blood-stained shirt, "Does this shirt look familiar?"
Teresa Lewis just glanced at it, then averted her gaze, as if she had seen something terrifying.
Alec Wyatt picked up the bag to look at, "This is…" he looked back at Teresa Lewis, "Teresa, this is your shirt, and the blood stains on it."
"We've already conducted an analysis; it's your wife's blood."
Alec Wyatt's eyes widened, and after a moment of silence he said, "Could it be that after my wife was injured, Teresa hugged her and got the blood stains on her?"
Luke shook his head, "The timing doesn't add up. If it were as you say, she wouldn't have had the chance to hide the bloody shirt, and there would be no reason to hide the clothes in the park.
More importantly, the blood stains aren't from contact, they're spatter from the time of the attack.
This indicates that she was at the scene when your wife was murdered and was wearing this very shirt."
Alec Wyatt sat in the chair weakly, grabbing his stepdaughter's shoulders, "Teresa, tell me this isn't true."
Teresa Lewis glanced at Alec Wyatt, then gave a fierce glare at Luke.
Luke wasn't accommodating to her, continuing, "We also found some other items in the park, like a pinhole camera and a USB drive, do you want to see?"
"No, I don't want to!" Teresa Lewis shouted.
"It's not up to you." Luke waved his hand.
Little Black opened a tablet computer and clicked the play software.
Teresa Lewis waved her hands, "Don't play it, I admit it, I killed her!"
Alec Wyatt also showed a shocked expression, stepping back two paces, "Teresa, how could you?"
"She forced me to do it."
Teresa Lewis showed a crazed expression, tears rolling down her cheeks, "That pervert installed cameras at home, monitoring our every move. She treated us like prisoners, wanting to keep us locked up forever.
Only by killing her could we truly be free."
