Chapter 455: Shrouded in Mystery (Part 3)
Two people fighting over treasure?
Could they really have found something in this cave?
Or maybe I overlooked something?
Luke couldn't figure it out for a moment.
"Luke, did you find anything up there?" Morris Dawan's voice came from outside.
"I'm coming down right away." Luke replied, took a few photos with his phone, and then left the cave.
At this moment, Morris Dawan had already gotten off the motorcycle and was attempting to climb the slope. However, one of his feet was still injured, making it difficult to climb the slope, and could easily lead to the injury reopening, so he ultimately gave up on reaching the platform and could only stand at the bottom of the slope, gazing up.
Luke shook his head, "There's nothing inside."
"Did you search carefully? Look for any signs of digging or markers where the treasure is hidden."
"I've already searched, there was nothing." Luke hid the fact that he had found bloodstains.
"If there's nothing, then why did you stay up there for so long?"
Luke said, "Because I needed to search carefully, it took some time."
Morris Dawan pointed to the slope, "But I found shoe prints here, proving those who drove up also went up."
"That's right, there were indeed their shoe prints inside, but no other discoveries, just an ordinary cave."
The two rode the motorcycle again to continue tracking the tire tracks, but this time, Luke only found car tire tracks, no longer any motorcycle tire tracks.
"Hold on." Morris Dawan stopped the motorcycle with a sidecar again.
Luke knowingly asked, "What's wrong?"
"The motorcycle tire tracks have disappeared, only car tracks can be seen, don't you think that's a bit strange?"
Luke said, "Maybe they are in cahoots, after meeting up here, they put the motorcycle on the car, that way they can save fuel.
Another possibility is that the motorcycle went on a small path to shake off the car. That small motorcycle is more flexible and agile than our motorcycle with a sidecar, and can pass through any path wide enough for one person."
Morris Dawan still frowned, but said nothing.
Luke continued to track the tire marks, and after walking a bit more, he saw that the vehicle went upwards, heading to the northern bank of the canyon, so Luke decided to stop tracking.
Luke returned to the canyon floor, continuing to search for the suspected treasure location.
Luke searched the canyon floor again, but didn't find a terrain very similar to the treasure map, which left him a bit frustrated as well.
They could only view from the high point on the southern bank and couldn't see the complete terrain, leading to some deception. Furthermore, the balance stone and spruce trees were somewhat misleading, with many similar markers in the canyon making treasure hunting challenging.
Luke thought to himself, the preparations this time were still insufficient, next time they should buy a drone to scout from the air, saving time and effort.
After Luke met up with Walker, the three of them returned to the RV.
This time, Walker had expended considerable energy by walking, so he did not continue forward.
After a simple dinner, Luke prepared to return to the RV.
Morris Dawan said, "Hey, buddy, did you forget something?"
Luke took out the motorcycle key with a sidecar, "You mean this, right? Since I'm driving tomorrow anyway, I'll just keep it with me."
After speaking, Luke didn't give Morris Dawan a chance to refuse and directly returned to the RV.
Morris Dawan's face was a bit unsightly as he said to Walker, who was beside him, "I think he's a bit out of line, don't you think, Walker."
"You're right, maybe failing to find the treasure again has left him a bit down, I'll have a word with him." Walker finished speaking, and also returned to the RV.
Morris Dawan's face was gloomy, standing there for a long time, and eventually returned to the tent.
After Walker got into the RV, he glanced out the window at him and asked Luke next to him, "Did that guy act strange today?"
"Yes, he seemed overly tense today. From my observation, he and the black woman who rode the motorcycle yesterday should be in league."
Walker thought for a moment, "It's possible, that black woman arrived before us twice when hunting for treasure, it's really too much of a coincidence."
Luke said, "I don't think it's a coincidence at all, but that he told our plan to that black woman in advance, letting her find the treasure first.
Even if we have a complete map, we can only pick up scraps behind them, and he can watch us from the side, deliberately stalling for time, giving that black woman more time."
Walker asked, "Today, didn't you discover car tire tracks too? Could the person driving the car be an accomplice of his?"
Luke thought for a moment, said, "Probably not, although the motorcycle and car tire tracks overlapped, it only shows that the owner of that car might be here for treasure hunting too, but I think they are not working together."
Walker asked, "Do you have any evidence?"
"We found a cave at the bottom of the canyon, and according to footprints, the owner of the motorcycle and the owner of the car both went into the cave, but I found bloodstains inside it. I suspect they might have had a conflict."
Walker looked out the window, "Does he know about this?"
"He discovered the tire tracks too, but since his leg is inconvenient, he didn't enter the cave, so he doesn't know about the bloodstains.
He inquired about the situation in the cave, and I gave some perfunctory responses.
As to whether he believes it or not, I can't be sure, we'll know by his actions tonight."
Walker guessed, "Do you think he'll run tonight?"
"Who knows?" Luke glanced at the motorcycle key with a sidecar in his hand, with this motorcycle, whether Morris Dawan runs or not no longer matters much.
He actually hopes Morris Dawan will make an unannounced departure, it might be more interesting.
Night fell.
Morris Dawan lay in the tent, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.
He clearly felt a change in Luke's attitude toward him, had they discovered him?
Where had he slipped up? Was it because of the oil stealing?
But Luke had previously said the gas of the black guy was stolen too, so why would he suspect him of stealing from himself?
Suddenly, Morris Dawan thought of something.
The last time they searched for the treasure location at the bottom of the canyon, it was just him and Walker.
Now, it was him and Luke exploring together.
He found that Luke had strong observational skills, having particular insights regarding the tire tracks.
Could he have determined that he stole the fuel through footprints?
Yes, it must be like that. Ever since he took the initiative to act with him, he was already on guard, monitoring his actions, watching his reactions.
He had been too careless.
Morris Dawan was reflecting, a habit developed since childhood. Whenever his father took him on outdoor adventures, his father would have him sum up the mistakes he made that day and resolve not to repeat them.
Judging from Luke taking the motorcycle key, the signs of a fallout have become noticeable. Whether to stay or leave, he must decide quickly.
Morris Dawan's ultimate goal was still to find the treasure.
He did indeed have an accomplice, the black woman on the motorcycle, Grey Roche.
This was also why he was unwilling to cooperate with Luke and Walker, as unequal distribution could easily leave a hidden danger.
Should he leave or wait to see the progress on his partner's side?
Moreover, today's tire tracks gave him a bad feeling, who left those car tire tracks?
Had Grey Roche been followed?
Why did her motorcycle tire tracks disappear?
Could it really be as Luke said, she went around the small path?
Thinking of this, Morris Dawan looked at the RV outside the tent, deliberately keeping some distance from it.
He took out his walkie-talkie, adjusted the frequency, and called, "Hello, this is Morris, can you hear me?"
A woman's voice came over the walkie-talkie, "Received, this is Grey, is it convenient to talk there?"
"Yes, they might suspect me now, what's the situation on your end?"
"I found the treasure!"
