Chapter 42 A Beautiful Lady Has An Appointment
Eno Community.
"Jack, wake up!"
The familiar voice roused the chubby boy from his dreams. He wiped the drool from his mouth, not knowing what he had dreamed about.
"Ugh, it's always..." Jack let out a soft sigh, lying on the bed for another two minutes until another urgent call came from downstairs.
Only then did he sit up, haphazardly put on his clothes, and went to the bathroom next door to wash up.
After freshening up, Jack went downstairs with his backpack slung over his shoulder, habitually glancing toward the kitchen, where his mom was most likely frying pancakes.
Jack once protested, hoping for a change in the breakfast routine, but his mom just smiled, and the next day... it was still pancakes.
But today was different. A tall, handsome young man was bustling in the kitchen while his mom sat by the dining table watching, grumbling, "When did you learn to cook? Did you often cook for that woman when you were living outside?"
Luke gestured for a pause, "Mom, stop talking about that woman, I've told you, I dumped her."
"I still think it was you who got dumped."
"Whatever you say. I don't care anymore, I've got new goals now."
Linda took a sip of her coffee, appearing casual as she asked, "What does she do? Tell me."
"Lawyer."
"What? Are you kidding?" Linda expressed her doubt.
"No, she's really pretty and spicy."
"Wow, then I can only wish you luck. I'm really looking forward to meeting your new girlfriend."
"Cool, am I going to have a lawyer sister-in-law? Like the kind in 'Golden Attorneys'?" the chubby boy chimed in.
Luke laughed, "What a sweet-talker. No wonder mom likes you so much."
The chubby boy looked smug, "Yay, who wouldn't like 'Charming Jack'? But I think mom likes you more."
"I don't like either of you. I'm getting sick of you two rascals. I really hope you two could move out together."
"Mom, abandoning a minor is illegal. If you buy me a game console, I might consider not reporting you."
Linda rolled her eyes, "Congratulations, you just lost your allowance for the month."
The chubby boy looked at Luke with a wronged expression, "Detective, you heard that, I want to call the police."
Luke didn't want to continue the topic, "OK, breakfast made with love is ready."
The chubby boy wrinkled his nose, "Smells pretty good."
Luke divided the fried rice into three portions. The ingredients included rice, eggs, bacon bits, diced carrots, diced onions, shrimp, and peas, which made it colorful, rich in taste, and nutritionally balanced.
The chubby boy swallowed hard. He was willing to try anything that wasn't a pancake.
With a spoonful of the fried rice, his eyes went wide, "Wow, it tastes good, different from what they sell in the restaurants, kind of like what dad makes. I like it."
Luke also took a bite, raising his eyebrow. Indeed, it was tasty; his culinary skills had not slipped.
In his past life, Luke didn't have many hobbies and didn't have time to pursue them. When resting, he would just read a novel, watch a movie, or make something delicious.
The leftover rice would be fried the next morning, usually with just rice, green onions, and eggs. If there was time, he might add some diced carrots and ham, but this was his first time using such a rich variety of ingredients.
A whole shrimp in his mouth felt satisfying.
Luke also liked the texture of peas; this was his first attempt at adding peas to fried rice.
Linda took a bite and nodded, "Not bad, did you use Chinese methods to make it?"
"Right."
Linda suggested, "It would taste even better with a layer of cheese on top."
Luke liked to add cheese to burgers, but for fried rice, he would pass; it was too greasy.
Jack quickly finished a plate of fried rice without leaving a single grain, "Bro, you could consider a career change. You'd definitely make a great chef."
A career change wasn't on Luke's mind for the time being. However, he did want to start a side hustle, preferably something that relied on luck, was easy, and made money—a way to monetize the Detective System.
Last night he hit a jackpot of eighteen thousand US Dollars. After liquidating, he could not only pay off his car loan but also save a few thousand bucks in US Dollars; he just hadn't figured out the right method yet.
After the meal, Luke took on the responsibility of doing the dishes.
His mom was very pleased with his performance today and treated him much better.
Jack went to school.
Mom also left.
That left Luke alone at home.
Luke called Daisy for a date to have dinner together tonight, but unfortunately, Daisy had to work overtime, so the date was moved to tomorrow.
Not having to work, Luke suddenly didn't know what to do, so he decided to do nothing and just lay on the couch watching TV series, with fried chicken and beer for lunch.
The afternoon was spent continuing to binge-watch; American dramas are indeed quite engaging.
In the evening, Luke treated to pizza, and the family of three ate pizza while watching "The Maury Show".
Luke wasn't sure if it was appropriate for the little chubster to watch at his age, but his mom, who was the guardian, didn't object, so he couldn't be bothered to interfere.
It was a show that could destroy one's sense of values, but it really was damn interesting.
If you're feeling depressed, watch The Maury Show.
If you think your life is tough, keep watching The Maury Show.
If your life is smooth sailing, stay away from this toxic program.
At ten o'clock at night, Luke went to bed on time, spending another boring yet comfortable day.
Actually, he quite liked this kind of 'decadent' life.
...
The next day, Luke wanted to continue his decadent lifestyle for most of the day, but was caught by his mom and put to work as a handyman, trimming the lawn and fixing the wooden fence, keeping busy all morning.
After lunch, Luke washed his car, took a shower himself, and drove out on his Harley.
...
Around six in the evening.
Kevis Law Firm.
A woman in a business suit stepped out of the building, her figure curvy, drawing quite a few stares.
"Hey, beautiful," Luke called out from atop his Harley, waving his hand.
Daisy ran up in a hurry, her ample chest bouncing like rabbits. "Sorry, I'm late."
"Don't let it happen again," Luke said, his mind wandering at the sight of her well-endowed Western figure.
"Yes, detective," Daisy replied, her blue eyes spinning around. "But what will happen if I'm late again?"
Luke said seriously, "I will punish you."
Daisy smiled, "OK, how do you want to punish me?"
Luke handed Daisy a red helmet, "Get on, I'm taking you to a place."
"I... have never ridden a motorcycle before?"
"Then you should definitely try it."
Daisy put on the helmet, sitting sideways on the motorcycle, feeling a little uncomfortable, "Are you sure I won't fall off sitting like this?"
"Wrap your arms around my waist."
"Are you serious?"
Luke didn't respond, just started the Harley and roared off as soon as he hit the throttle.
"Oh my God..." Daisy got startled and instinctively hugged Luke tightly, murmuring, "What a bad guy."
At first, Daisy might have been stiff from the tension, but after driving down a few streets, she gradually got used to it.
Half an hour later, Luke rode the Harley to Chinatown in the Twin Poles area.
Los Angeles has three Chinatowns where Chinese congregate; the one in the city center is the oldest Chinatown, with many Cantonese people and poor surroundings.
The second is known as Little Taiwan, with a majority of people from Fujian province.
The third Chinatown is in the Twin Poles area, where most of the new immigrants live, and it has the best overall environment.
Luke chose to date Daisy here mainly because of the home-field advantage.
In wooing a girl, in addition to appearance and financial status, conversation, manners, and knowledge can also attract a woman's attention.
Daisy is a very outstanding woman, with high beauty, education, and capabilities, and Luke, having lived twice, wouldn't dare claim to be better than her.
But in one aspect, Luke was certainly more skilled than her: his familiarity with and understanding of Chinese culture.
Chinese culture is profound and vast, and many foreigners like it; what's considered common sense to Chinese might be viewed as remarkable knowledge abroad.
If Luke could engage Daisy with his humorous and interesting cultural stories.
Wooing a girl is all about showcasing one's strengths.
If you can bring the girl into a domain you're familiar with, the date is already halfway to success...
