Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 389: Joint Crime_2

"Between 10 PM on December 17th and 3 AM on the 18th, was your husband with you?"

Mrs. Morrison thought for a moment, "No."

"Where did he go?"

"He went out to drink with a friend."

"Did he tell you that?"

"Yes."

"Did you verify which friend he was drinking with?"

"No, I trust him, that's the most basic thing between a husband and wife."

"Madam, I'm sorry.

Your husband betrayed your trust. That night, he didn't go out to drink with friends. Instead, he went to meet with Kilo Jones near Highway 1. Do you know why?"

Mrs. Morrison glanced at the bedroom, shook her head, "I don't know."

"Is there any grudge between your husband and Kilo Jones?"

"Not that I'm aware of."

"Do you have any suspects for who killed Kilo Jones?"

Mrs. Morrison looked down, "No."

"Where were you between 10 PM and midnight on December 25th?"

"At home."

"Can anyone confirm that?"

"My husband."

Luke stared at Mrs. Morrison, sensing she was lying.

But he couldn't tell if she was lying to hide her relationship with Kilo Jones.

Or if she was lying because of Kilo Jones's murder.

In any case, this woman was definitely hiding something and it could be worth investigating further.

However, considering Darwin Morrison was just in the bedroom, Mrs. Morrison might not want to speak the truth to the police while her husband was listening. This was not a good opportunity for an in-depth conversation.

Luke left a business card and temporarily left Morrison's house with Captain Rey.

...

Returning to the Canyon Police Station, Luke gathered everyone in the meeting room.

Luke handed out Mrs. Morrison's statement for everyone to see.

After reading the statement, Blackie said, "I saw Mrs. Morrison from the car. From the content of the statement, she should be hiding something. In my experience, she likely had an affair with the deceased, Kilo Jones.

If that's the case, Darwin Morrison has enough motive to commit the crime."

Jackson said, "But according to the clues from the officer-killing case, the perpetrator is likely a black woman, and Darwin Morrison is a man, so it doesn't match."

Rey asked, "Is this lead accurate?"

"Accurate. The witness is also involved in the case and was the only one to see the back of the perpetrator," Luke said.

Rey lowered his head, reviewed the statements again, and analyzed, "Could it be the couple acted together?

On the night of December 17th, Darwin Morrison went near Highway 1 to kill Kilo Jones.

On the night of December 25th, Mrs. Morrison took the gun and killed the officer from the Southern District.

Then they colluded to provide each other with a false alibi for the 25th."

Luke followed Rey's line of reasoning, and it made sense.

The footprints found at the crime scene could very well be Mrs. Morrison's.

However, there was still the problem that the detectives from the Canyon Station searched Darwin Morrison's house and found no stolen goods or murder weapon related to the case. Even if they were the perpetrators, it would be hard to convict them.

"Knock, knock." The door of the meeting room was knocked on, and an officer came in, whispered a few words to Rey, and handed him a hard drive.

Rey said, "We've found a lead from the person who reported the case."

Rey went to the projector, played a video, and explained, "This is a video from outside a shop, very close to the public phone booth from where the emergency call was made.

The shop owner had been on vacation and just returned today, so we just obtained the video."

Rey fast-forwarded the video and stopped near the time the emergency call was made. Shortly after, a woman's figure appeared in the video, looking around and walking towards the phone booth.

However, the camera couldn't capture the phone booth due to its direction.

A few minutes later, the woman returned the way she came and reappeared in the video.

Rey paused the video, "Although the camera couldn't capture the public phone booth, the time when this woman first appeared in the video coincides with the emergency call.

The time she returned also matches the time the call was made.

We can speculate that this woman must have entered the phone booth and made the emergency call."

Luke stared at the video, "This woman looks familiar. Can you zoom in the video?"

Rey zoomed in on the video, and the woman's image became clearer.

Everyone said in unison, "Mrs. Morrison!"

Rey was also a bit surprised, "How could it be her?"

...

Half an hour later.

Luke and the others returned to Morrison's house.

"Knock, knock." The door opened.

This time it was Mrs. Morrison who opened the door.

She sighed and called into the house, "Darling, it's for you."

Darwin Morrison also came to the door, shrugged, "I've told you everything I know. Why are you back again?"

"We're not here for you." Luke looked at Mrs. Morrison, "Ma'am, we'd like you to come to the station to give a statement."

Mrs. Morrison crossed her arms, "What do you mean? Do you suspect me of being the killer?

Seriously, you can't catch the killer, so you have time to harass an innocent housewife."

"Ma'am, we're inviting you to the station not because we suspect you're the killer, but because we need to take a statement from the person who reported the case.

We appreciate your action in reporting, which allowed the police to discover the body in time and open the investigation."

Mrs. Morrison's face changed slightly. She looked at Luke, then glanced at her husband.

Darwin Morrison was also shocked, pointing at his wife with his finger, "You reported it?"

"I..." Mrs. Morrison was momentarily speechless.

Luke made a gesture of invitation, "Ma'am, please."

Mrs. Morrison didn't hesitate much, threw on a coat, and directly got into the police car, leaving Darwin Morrison standing at the door, dumbfounded…

After getting in the car, Mrs. Morrison stared in the direction of her house until the car drove away, then slowly asked, "How did you find me?"

Captain Rey said, "You were indeed careful, using a public phone booth and deliberately changing your voice.

But clearly, that wasn't enough. Our police investigation methods are more thorough than you think.

Why did you hide your identity as the person who reported the case?"

Mrs. Morrison tugged at her coat, "I had arranged to meet Kilo Jones on the morning of the 18th, but he didn't show up. His phone was unreachable, and he didn't come home either.

He never missed an appointment before, so I was worried something had happened to him and called the police.

The reason I hid the identity of the person who reported is because I didn't want my husband to overthink…

He always felt I was too close to Kilo Jones...

He overthought it. We were just good friends, like a platonic friendship."

Luke didn't really believe their relationship was purely platonic. From her previous words, it was clear they had been alone together more than once. "Was it your husband who killed Kilo Jones?"

Mrs. Morrison shook her head, "No, I don't think so. My husband doesn't have a gun, and he wouldn't commit murder.

He doesn't have the guts.

Besides, he had no reason to do so…

Kilo Jones and I were just friends."

Luke said, "But that's not what your husband thinks. He feels there's more than friendship between you and Kilo Jones, and he met him near Highway 1 for a man's talk.

As far as I know, such a conversation can easily escalate."

Mrs. Morrison fell silent.

Luke continued, "Where were you between 10 PM on December 17th and 3 AM on the 18th?"

If it was indeed a joint crime by the couple, then the woman wearing high heels at the crime scene might very well be Mrs. Morrison.

"I was at home."

"Who can confirm that?"

Mrs. Morrison shook her head, "Just me."

Being alone means she has no alibi.

This couple is deeply entangled in the case.

If it really was a crime committed together by the couple, why would Mrs. Morrison take the initiative to report it?
