Chapter 65: Nightmare Slime
"So, I didn't inherit Little Rosen's ancestral supernatural bloodline after all."
Rosen pondered the empty bloodline section in his attributes with newfound understanding. This revelation was good news for him. After all, nobles in the Noble Sequence faced great difficulty if they wished to strip away an old supernatural bloodline and merge with a stronger one.
Had he inherited Little Rosen's ancestral bloodline, Rosen would have had to deal with the headache of upgrading it later. But now, he could simply fuse a powerful new bloodline, solving his problem of being unable to further elevate his spiritual power.
Since he needed to fuse a supernatural bloodline, it was best to choose the strongest one possible—better to handle it now than to deal with complications in the future.
However, the stronger the bloodline, the harder it was to fuse. Even if someone offered him a Sequence 3 demigod bloodline, it wouldn't matter. Not only would he be unable to merge with it, but he would likely die the instant he made contact with it.
Therefore, the highest level of bloodline Rosen could currently fuse with was Sequence 4, which was the limit for most nobles.
Over the next few days, Rosen scoured both merchant houses and black markets throughout Blazing Shadow City. There were quite a few supernatural bloodlines for sale, but few that truly caught his eye.
One early morning, Rosen returned to the black market once again. This time, disguised with his Actor's Mask, he was greeted by a different merchant.
He was willing to exchange his Wavebreaker ship in return for the bloodline he wanted.
Back at the Artist Guild, Rosen carefully examined the bloodline he had acquired.
A supernatural bloodline wasn't necessarily just blood; more accurately, it was a genetic code extracted from a supernatural life form through scientific means.
By fusing this genetic material into his noble extraordinary source essence, a noble could inherit certain innate abilities from the supernatural bloodline, and their growth potential would rise to match the level of the bloodline. This was why noble families rarely produced weaklings.
The bloodline Rosen held was from a powerful Sequence 4 entity, one ranked among the top of its level.
Such a pristine bloodline would normally be impossible to obtain—100 Wavebreaker ships wouldn't be enough to trade for it.
However, the reason Rosen had managed to acquire it was that this bloodline was flawed. The original owner had nearly ascended to Sequence 3, but had failed in the process, causing the partially formed divine essence to collapse and mix into the bloodline.
Divine essence wasn't all benefits—it could have dangerous side effects. Stable divine essence had advantages, but unstable divine essence could cause drastic personality changes or, worse, spiritual collapse.
The bloodline Rosen had acquired contained just such an unstable divine essence.
This made the bloodline incredibly valuable yet highly risky. Those willing to gamble couldn't afford it, while those wealthy enough didn't need to take such risks. Thus, the bloodline had languished in the black market until Rosen traded his Wavebreaker for it.
Rosen, however, wasn't planning to gamble with his life. His Main God Computer could extract and transform divine essence, meaning it could remove the unstable part, leaving behind a pure Sequence 4 bloodline.
Rosen returned to the Mysterious Study Room, placing the genetic syringe carrying the bloodline next to the computer's mouse.
Immediately, colorful lights emerged as the Main God Computer extracted the unstable divine essence, transforming and reinjecting it into the bloodline. Afterward, Rosen reviewed the bloodline's new status through the computer.
The bloodline originated from a Nightmare Slime, a Sequence 4 lifeform from the Spiritual Realm.
When most people thought of slimes, the first thought that came to mind was "the disgrace of supernatural life forms." Even a child could easily crush a Sequence 9 slime with their fists.
But slimes were indeed classified as supernatural beings, and they were the only lifeforms with unknown evolutionary potential.
Theoretically, a Sequence 9 slime could evolve into a Sequence 0 entity on par with gods. In reality, however, it was extremely rare for a slime to evolve naturally to Sequence 8.
This particular Nightmare Slime, which had evolved to Sequence 4, was a rare variant in the long history of slime evolution. Though it had failed to ascend to Sequence 3, it had managed to accumulate a portion of divine essence, now refined by Rosen's Main God Computer.
While the bloodline could no longer evolve to Sequence 3, the divine essence retained within it was enough to activate the Nightmare Slime's divine ability.
By merging with this bloodline, Rosen would gain an unknown divine ability from the Nightmare Slime.
Excited, Rosen picked up the genetic syringe and injected it directly into his carotid artery.
In the Noble Sequence, the extraordinary source essence resides in the blood itself. As the Nightmare Slime's genetic material entered his bloodstream, it immediately fused with his noble source essence. This fusion then spread through his entire body, carried by his blood.
Rosen's physical strength increased significantly, and his vitality was enhanced several times over.
However, the biggest change occurred in his spiritual power. His spiritual energy smoothly broke through the previous barrier of 11 points, reaching 12 points. His spiritual energy now also carried the Nightmare Attribute, granting him the ability to devour nightmares from sentient beings to further enhance his spiritual energy.
In the Hunter x Hunter Realm, at Yorknew City, Rosen lay in the mayor's office, relaxing with his eyes closed.
Previously, though Rosen had converted Freddy's ability into Nen, allowing him to control dreams, his range of influence had been limited to his own spiritual sensing radius.
For most extraordinary beings, this sensing radius was typically around 100 meters per point of spiritual strength.
Thanks to the Actor's Mask, Rosen had gained the ability Void Scavenging, which had doubled his spiritual sensing range. With 12 points of spiritual strength, his maximum range extended to a 2.4-kilometer radius.
This was his limit for controlling Freddy's powers.
However, after fusing with the Nightmare Slime bloodline, Rosen's ability to sense dreams had increased tenfold. Now, he could sense all dreams within a 24-kilometer radius, enough to encompass the entire city of Yorknew and take control of everyone's dreams.
Rosen randomly picked a black nightmare bubble located around 24 kilometers away and, with a mere thought, entered the nightmare.
Inside the nightmare, Rosen immediately noticed a change in his form. In the past, he had two dream forms: one was his regular human appearance, and the other was a disguise as Freddy. Now, he had a third form—the Nightmare Slime form.
Choosing the third form, Rosen transformed into a slime-like creature, his body resembling a droplet of water engulfed in black flames.
While in his human form, he hadn't noticed much of a difference, but now, as a Nightmare Slime, he felt an overwhelming sense of hunger. The entire nightmare world appeared to him as a feast.
He decided not to suppress his appetite, letting his instincts take over as he began his first meal.
Opening his mouth wide, his slime body expanded into a gaping maw, swallowing the entire nightmare bubble world bit by bit. Finally, the nightmare bubble was completely devoured, and Rosen let out a satisfied burp as he began to digest his first nightmare.
