The tension in the air was palpable. Batman stood firm, his imposing silhouette framed against the flickering neon lights of the club. Nuxsus, still grinning like a predator that had found worthy prey, cracked his knuckles, his muscles tensing with excitement.
"Oh, this is gonna be fun," Nuxsus said, rolling his shoulders. "A true warrior, all dressed up like a creature of the night. You know, in my time, you'd be leading an army—riding at the front, your men chanting your name, swords raised high. A real battlefield legend. But here? You're just another guy playing dress-up, keeping the weak safe from their own stupidity."
Batman remained silent, calculating. He didn't waste words where they weren't needed. His sharp mind was already assessing Nuxsus' stance, his reflexes, his power.
Then, without warning, Batman moved.
A batarang flew through the air, aimed directly at Nuxsus' face. But before it could land, Nuxsus tilted his head ever so slightly, watching the projectile sail past.
"Fast," he mused, "but not fast enough."
In an instant, Batman closed the distance, throwing a powerful right hook. Nuxsus caught it mid-swing, feeling the sheer force behind the punch vibrate through his arm.
"Not bad," he chuckled, tightening his grip. 'If I didn't have this serum, that might've hurt.'
With a burst of strength, Nuxsus twisted Batman's arm, attempting to force him off balance. Batman reacted swiftly, twisting his own body into a seamless counter, slipping free and landing a precise elbow strike to Nuxsus' ribs. The impact was solid, forcing the self-proclaimed Lord of Chaos to take a step back.
"Oh-ho! Now we're talking!" Nuxsus grinned, rubbing his side. "A normal man would be wheezing by now. You really are something else."
Batman didn't respond—he was already moving again. A smoke pellet hit the ground, filling the space between them with thick, dark fog. Nuxsus narrowed his eyes, focusing, his Mind's Eye picking up Batman's faint movements within the cloud. He smirked.
"You think a little fog is gonna throw me off? I can see you, Bats. I can feel the way your heart beats—steady, unshaken. You're used to this, huh?"
Batman emerged from the smoke behind him, aiming a grapple line at Nuxsus' legs. The cable shot out, wrapping tight around his ankle before Batman yanked, pulling Nuxsus off his feet.
But instead of hitting the floor, Nuxsus reacted instantly, using his telekinesis to stop his fall mid-air.
"Hah! Oh, this is too good! A warrior and a tactician!" Nuxsus said, flipping himself upright with unnatural ease. "I swear, you would've been a general in my time! Maybe even a king."
Without missing a beat, Batman surged forward, engaging Nuxsus in a brutal exchange of blows. The two combatants moved like blurs, fists and feet striking with inhuman speed and precision. Batman's movements were disciplined, honed through years of training. Nuxsus was wild, but controlled, his enhanced physique and telekinesis giving him an unnatural edge.
Blades shot from Batman's gauntlet, aiming for Nuxsus' throat, but he leaned back just in time. Batman followed up with a crushing knee to his stomach. Nuxsus absorbed the blow with a grin, catching Batman's leg and tossing him across the room with a burst of telekinetic force.
Batman flipped mid-air, landing in a crouch, unshaken.
"Still standing?" Nuxsus mused. "I love that."
As the battle raged, Harley, who had been watching in awe, suddenly grinned wickedly. She reached for her bat and dashed forward, leaping into the fray.
With a gleeful laugh, she swung her bat, catching Batman across the head. The impact was solid, sending him stumbling to the side.
"Hah! Take that, Batsy!" Harley cheered. "A lil' love tap from yours truly!"
But before she could swing again, a powerful voice cut through the air.
"DON'T INTERFERE, WOMAN!"
Harley froze, blinking in confusion. Nuxsus was glaring at her, eyes glowing with intensity.
"This fight was perfect," he growled. "You just ruined it."
Batman, disoriented from the blow, attempted to regain his footing. But Nuxsus could already tell—he wasn't moving the same. His precision, his strength—both dulled by Harley's interruption.
The Lord of Chaos sighed, his excitement fading.
"Tch. And here I was having fun."
With a sudden burst of speed, he closed the distance, slamming his fist into Batman's gut with the force of a sledgehammer. Batman staggered back, but Nuxsus didn't let up. Another blow connected with his chest, then his jaw. Finally, a telekinetic blast sent the Dark Knight skidding across the floor.
Batman attempted to rise, but his body refused to cooperate. His mind was sharp, his will unbroken, but physically—he was spent.
Nuxsus walked toward him, shaking his head.
"I wanted this to end in glory," he muttered. "But now? This just feels…anticlimactic."
As Batman staggered, his breath heavy, his body battered, he reached into his utility belt and fired his grappling gun toward the ceiling, hoping to make a last-second escape. But before the line could fully attach, a thin shard of glass shot through the air, guided by an unseen force, and sliced the rope clean in half. The severed line snapped backward, and Batman fell back to the ground with a harsh grunt.
Nuxsus chuckled, strolling forward with an almost lazy confidence. He crouched down beside the wounded Dark Knight, elbows resting on his knees, and stared into his weary eyes.
"You know, I gotta ask... Why do you do this? This whole 'heroic' thing? What's in it for you?" Nuxsus asked, his tone laced with genuine curiosity.
Batman pushed himself up onto his knees, his breathing labored but his resolve unwavering. "To protect the weak. The defenseless. People who deserve to live their lives free from the terror of criminals like you."
Nuxsus's grin faltered slightly as he searched Batman's face, looking for even a flicker of deception. He had hoped—no, expected—to find some selfish reason buried in those steely eyes. Glory? Power? A fragile ego needing validation? But there was nothing. No falsehoods. No cracks in the armor. Just pure, unshakable conviction.
"Hah… I don't get it," Nuxsus said, standing up and rolling his shoulders. "Why? What have the weak ever done to deserve protecting? Why don't they fight for themselves? Why do they get to walk so safely if the world is dark? These people... pathetic. Honestly, why not do something to fight back? Learn a skill, build some strength, stop relying on people like you to shield them from the inevitable. Born so frail, so weak, so protected. I hate it."
Batman didn't respond immediately, merely watching the man before him with sharp, assessing eyes. Nuxsus continued to stare, but when Batman didn't offer an answer, he let out a long, exaggerated sigh.
"Had I won fairly, I'd have killed you right here, right now," he mused, turning his back to the fallen hero. "You should thank that woman." He gestured loosely toward Harley's hiding spot behind the bar. "She's the only reason you're still breathing. But next time we meet? I might not be so generous. Maybe it's time you reconsider your occupation."
With that, he turned and started walking away, hands in his pockets, whistling a lazy tune. As he neared the exit, he called out in a smooth, commanding voice, "Come out of there. Now. And follow me."
From behind the bar, Harley peeked out, her playful smirk never fading. "You ain't gonna smack me 'round, are ya?" she asked, half-teasing, half-genuinely curious.
Nuxsus merely glanced at her and shrugged. "No. Just come here. And follow."
That was all Harley needed to hear. She beamed brightly, her excitement bubbling over as she twirled out from her hiding spot, her movements playful and exaggerated. "Well, ain't you the charmer!" she giggled, prancing behind him as they left the club together.
Behind them, Batman clenched his jaw, pushing himself up despite the pain. His mind was already racing, analyzing everything about this new threat. Because one thing was clear—Nuxsus wasn't just another criminal. He was something else entirely.
