Living with the Arrogant Queen from High School is Surprisingly Not Uncomfortable

Chapter 76

On an unspecified day in October.

I was led by Hayashi, and we left the house early in the morning. It’s a time when I would normally still be cleaning. If I were a selfish man, I might have complained to Hayashi.

Lately, Hayashi and I have become quite close.

In high school, and when we first met again in college, our relationship was rather strained. Yet, in just two months, it has changed so much.

Despite our newfound closeness, today we walk the path without much conversation.

I can’t tell what’s going through Hayashi’s mind as she walks ahead.

But as for my own feelings… they’re filled with a little anxiety, tension, and fear. There’s no good feeling to speak of.

I thought I wouldn’t have to go there again.

The number of times I’ve been to our destination today is only once. Yet, at that time, I was certain of it.

However, my conviction was betrayed.

The catalyst was a phone call that rang on my smartphone.

The person who called not Hayashi’s, but my cell phone was, indeed, the police.

At that time, a bad feeling briefly crossed my mind.

Right now, there’s only one case that would get me involved with the police.

The police, either sensing my tension through the phone… or because most people tense up when they receive a call from the police, asked me in a deliberately cheerful voice.

Of course, the worst-case scenario I had in mind for a moment did not occur.

Rather, it was something like…

One morning.

Hayashi and I walk down the street.

Our destination is the rented apartment where she once lived with her boyfriend.

Her ex-boyfriend subjected Hayashi to domestic violence and is now living in prison.

The call from the police informed me that, due to the wishes of her ex-boyfriend’s parents, the rental contract with her ex-boyfriend would be terminated at the end of this month. In short, they told me that if we wanted to retrieve Hayashi’s belongings, there was not much time left.

That’s how we came to walk down the street early this morning.

At first, I hesitated.

Whether or not to suggest to Hayashi that she get close to that room.

…Perhaps there’s something there that Hayashi cherishes.

While I thoroughly considered that possibility, the memory of my previous visit negated my intention.

Well, I did hesitate for a moment, but in the end, I decided to tell Hayashi about it.

The fact that I thought it was important to prioritize her wishes is true, but more than anything, I gave in to Hayashi, who squinted her eyes and asked me with a stern voice about my phone call.

Hayashi looked puzzled for a while.

However, in the end, she made up her mind and asked me to accompany her.

And so, here we are.

Still, Hayashi gives no sign of talking to me.

I hope she’s not overthinking it.

Given what happened last time, I was a bit worried about Hayashi’s state.

“That room is probably dustier than before.”

At times like this, it’s important to say something to lighten the mood.

With that in mind, I recall the day when I was taken to their love nest by her and her ex-boyfriend. I remember the dusty room where I couldn’t stop sneezing for a while.

“I’ve got an extra mask in my pocket.”

…The fact that I can only come up with topics about cleaning at times like this proves that I’m an extraordinary cleaning freak.

“If you wear two masks on such a hot day, it’s bound to be stuffy. I’m such an idiot. Ahaha.”

Hayashi doesn’t respond.

“….I’ve also brought glasses for dust protection. When dust gets in your eyes, the tears won’t stop.”

“…Did you buy some weird cleaning tool again?”

“Hey, what do you mean weird? This has its unique ways to be utilized.”

“Who are you empathizing with?”

Seeing Hayashi’s incredulous face, I feel relieved despite my outward appearance.

…I thought she would be more distressed, but it seems like she’ll be okay.

“Thank you. I’ve made you worry.”

“Where did you get that idea?”

“Did I get it wrong?”

“No, you’re right.”

“Ahaha. I see.”

Soon, we arrived at our destination.
