Chapter 58: Max's Mistrust
The interrogation began on Taser while the meeting was shortly dispersed.
That left only two people who had been together after it.
There was boss Max and Butch who had gone to a more private room and were seated opposite each other.
Max sat calmly as he elegantly poured some tea into some tea cups causing the cups to fill up and gently create ripples with each slight movement.
He then passed one of the cups over to Butch and took the other one for himself while taking a sip before placing it back down. "Now for you... I do not know how you managed to unearth something like this but I am grateful."
Although he said that, there was once a time when he was highly suspicious of Butch more than anyone else who was present at the meeting.
Butch survived such a big event and came back from it unharmed while so many others had died.
One side had suffered even greater losses so one valid reason behind all of it was that a fight broke out between both sides and one side came out of it as the victor.
If it was not for the people that Butch brought back then he would have had nothing to prove such a thing.
What was even more surprising to Max was how Butch was able to unearth such a traitor within the gang so quickly.
Max had believed strongly that Butch was the problem within the gang and that he was trying to shift the blame onto others.
He went along with the reports of Butch just to cover all bases and soon the words of Butch were confirmed to be true.
There was still a small part of Max that still had many doubts that could not be removed so easily.
Everything just seemed to be too convenient.
It was all too easy and when things were like that, there was usually something else that had yet to be uncovered.
There was always a possibility that Butch was still a traitor and he was just making use of someone else to shift the blame away from himself.
If someone was smart enough then it was possible to achieve such a thing.
All it took was for one person to turn traitor along with others but not everyone would be fully aware of who each of them were.
Not everyone could conceal their tracks so well and there were always people who brought in others themselves but did not reveal their identity when they did it.
Some used a proxy or an alias of some kind while others simply gave names to others to recruit into their cause.
That was usually the way that they escaped being involved with such plots and kept themselves clean when others could be put at risk.
Max had experienced many years of all kinds of plots before he finally took more of a backseat in the gang life so he was no fool.
He was not someone who could trust others blindly and take others for their word alone.
His attitude toward Butch was that he was grateful but he remained quite stern. "So how did you manage to solve all of this? I am quite curious."
Butch looked a little nervous but did not give in completely to the intimidation of Max. "I have some good sources but I cannot just give them up. I do not care too much even if this results in me getting nothing for solving this."
Butch did not wish to give up Tiffany as his source since that would be like putting her at risk.
It was possible that someone like Max would wish to make use of her talents in various ways.
Butch did not wish for her to be exploited for the sake of the benefits that could be gained from her abilities by the gang.
He had no other choice but to remain firm as he went on to speak. "Boss, I will remain loyal even in death. If you wish to make me prove it then you can take my life now. I would gladly die if it is by your hand.
Boss, this gang is all I have. It is the only family I have and the only constant thing that has been in my life. Although there are some things I would not be willing to give up and sacrifice, everything else of mine is already fully devoted to you and this gang."
Butch had been just like Tiffany in terms of how his life had gone from a young age.
He was picked up by the carnival just like many others only to be sold off later.
His life did not improve a great deal after being sold into the gang but he did not complain about the new lifestyle he had been thrown into.
It was scary at first but he soon found his place and came to find a family of his own within the gang.
He soon found himself being loyal to the gang and that would not change.
Even as he said such things to Max, his voice was full of conviction as if to make it very clear how loyal he was and that he could not be doubted so easily.
He truly was willing to put his life in the hands of Max if it meant he would die proving his loyalty.
If it did end up coming to such a thing and he had to give up his life then he would have to rely on his trust in Puck and she would have to handle some matters for him to get Tiffany moved away to safety.
Max narrowed his eyes and carefully examined the expression of Butch. "Alright, everyone has things they want to keep to themselves. You have already done a good job here but you are not out of the woods yet."
