Chapter 9: Echoes in the Shadows
The air in the ruins was thick with tension. Every footfall echoed unnaturally, bouncing off the damp, crumbling stone walls. Kael, Lys, and Ren moved cautiously through the narrow passage, their lantern casting long, flickering shadows. Thorne had insisted they move immediately after Kael's vision; the urgency in his voice still rang in Kael's ears.
"This place gives me the creeps" Ren muttered, his hand resting lightly on the hilt of his sword. "Feels like the walls are watching us."
"Focus" Lys said sharply. Her tone was calm but edged with a steeliness that reminded Kael why she was often the one to take the lead. "We can't afford distractions."
Carrying the lantern, Kael paused to glance at a series of carvings etched into the wall. They depicted strange, angular symbols that seemed to shift when he looked at them too long. "Thorne said these ruins predate Eldergrove. It makes you wonder what kind of people lived here."
"Probably ones smart enough to leave this place alone" Ren quipped.
"Or ones who didn't have a choice" Lys added grimly.
The passage opened into a large chamber, its ceiling so high the lantern's light couldn't reach it. At its center stood a massive stone dais, and atop it rested a pedestal, empty save for a small indentation shaped like a jagged crystal.
Kael stepped forward, his eyes narrowing as he studied the pedestal. "This must be where the artifact was kept."
"And it's already gone" Ren noted, crossing his arms. "Fantastic. We're late to the party."
Lys began circling the dais, her boots scuffing the dusty floor. "Not necessarily. Whoever took it probably hasn't left the ruins yet. They'd need time to study it or prepare to transport it safely."
Kael nodded, but a gnawing unease tightened his chest. "What if they knew we were coming? What if they're waiting for us?"
Ren's laugh was humorless. "Then they'll regret it. I didn't come all this way to turn back now."
"Neither did I" Lys agreed. "But we'll have to be careful. Thorne mentioned the artifact's power might attract… other things."
Kael frowned. "Other things?"
"Creatures that thrive on the Veil's instability" Lys clarified. "Spirits, shades, maybe worse."
As if on cue, a faint whispering sound filled the air. It was soft at first, barely audible over their breathing, but it grew louder, weaving into a chorus of unintelligible voices.
"What the hell is that?" Ren hissed, drawing his sword.
Kael's grip on the lantern tightened as shadows began to shift unnaturally along the walls. "I think we're about to find out."
The first attack came from the left. A shadow peeled itself from the wall, taking the form of a humanoid figure with glowing, hollow eyes. It lunged at Ren, who barely managed to dodge its clawed swipe.
"Shades!" Lys shouted, unsheathing her dagger. "Don't let them surround you!"
Kael stumbled back as another shade emerged from the floor, its form rippling like smoke. The crystal beneath his shirt pulsed with warmth, and he instinctively clutched it. The warmth spread to his hand, and a faint glow emanated from his palm.
"Kael, do something!" Ren yelled, slashing at the shade in front of him. His sword passed through its form, scattering it temporarily, but it quickly reformed.
Kael closed his eyes, focusing on the crystal's energy. He felt it respond, a wave of light surging outward from his hand. When he opened his eyes, the nearest shade recoiled, its form dissolving into mist.
"Light works!" he shouted. "Keep them in the light!"
Ren and Lys adjusted their positions, staying close to Kael and the lantern's glow. Together, they pushed back against the encroaching shadows, the room filling with bursts of light as Kael used the crystal's power.
The battle felt endless, but eventually, the whispers faded, and the shadows receded. The group stood panting, their faces pale but determined.
"That… was unpleasant" Ren said, wiping his brow. "Please tell me that's the worst this place has to offer."
"I doubt it" Lys replied, her voice tight. "But it confirms Thorne's warning. The artifact's power is destabilizing the Veil. We need to find it before things get worse."
Kael nodded, though his hands still trembled from the confrontation. The warmth of the crystal was fading, leaving behind a dull ache. "I think the crystal can lead us to it. I just need time to focus again."
"Then we don't have time to waste" Lys said. "We move deeper into the ruins. Stay sharp."
Ren groaned but followed as they pressed on, the echoes of their footsteps blending with the lingering whispers in the dark.
The corridor ahead twisted sharply, opening into a labyrinth of tunnels. The walls were lined with more carvings, their designs growing more intricate and alien. Kael's lantern flickered, casting eerie patterns on the stone. The crystal in his chest pulsed faintly, tugging him toward a specific path.
"This way" he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Lys hesitated. "Are you sure?"
"It's the crystal. It's guiding me" Kael replied, his gaze fixed on the tunnel ahead.
Ren grumbled but didn't argue, following closely as they ventured deeper. The air grew colder, and an unnatural silence fell, broken only by their breathing and the faint hum of the crystal.
Suddenly, the floor beneath Kael's feet shifted. He stumbled, the lantern swinging wildly. "Watch out!" he shouted as the ground gave way, sending him tumbling into darkness.
Kael's landing was cushioned by something soft and sticky. He groaned, pushing himself up and blinking in the dim light. The lantern had landed nearby, its glow revealing a cavern covered in thick, web-like strands.
"Kael! Are you okay?" Lys's voice echoed from above.
"I'm fine" Kael called back. "But I think I've found another problem."
Ren's face appeared above the edge of the hole, his expression grim. "Stay put. We're coming down."
Using a rope from Lys's pack, the two descended into the cavern. Ren wrinkled his nose as he stepped onto the sticky floor. "Great. Just what we needed. Giant spiders, maybe?"
"Let's hope not" Lys said, scanning the room. "Kael, does the crystal say anything?"
Kael focused, feeling the faint pull again. "That way" he said, pointing toward a tunnel partially obscured by webbing.
The group moved cautiously, cutting through the strands with their weapons. The tunnel opened into another chamber, this one dominated by a massive cocoon suspended from the ceiling. Beneath it lay the artifact, its jagged form glowing faintly with a sinister red light.
"There it is" Kael said, his voice tinged with awe and dread.
Before anyone could move, the cocoon began to tremble. A deep, guttural growl reverberated through the chamber as the strands around it snapped. Something massive began to emerge.
"Ren" Lys said, her voice deadly calm. "I think you're about to get your spiders."
