Life of Ejaer

Chapter 3: DiningHall

After I finished taking a shower and changing my clothes I exited the bathroom and looked around. Edward was gone and my other roommate named Jackal replaced him.

Jackal seemed a bit reserved since he didn't talk much when we all met on the first day, which was yesterday. He had black hair and black eyes. That paired with the look on his face half the time gave him an intimidating look. He also noticed me as we looked at one another.

Despite this fact neither of us say a word to each other. He lays on the bottom bunk which he claimed and closes his eyes. I, on the other hand, put on my shoes as I hadn't eaten lunch yet.

' Seems like he's going to sleep. I'm not sure where Edward went either. I didn't have time to explore yesterday. Should I ask one of the adults where the dining hall is? '

I think to myself as I leave the room. The halls aren't all that fancy but it doesn't bother me. I come from a middle class family in the outer district. I got accepted here since my talent was found to be better than most. There were no fees other than swearing loyalty to Duke Harmon.

I made my way out the dorm building and found myself annoyed by the heat. I walked around for a bit and found a sign with a map on it.

There were many other kids there as well making it hard for me to see it. After a couple minutes I had a rough idea of where to go so I headed off.

As I walked I noticed that while the buildings themselves are massive there aren't many of them. Other than the paths most of the space was covered by flower gardens, trees, places to rest, and more. This made things more far apart than I thought they had any right to be.

After around half an hour I arrived at the Dining Hall. There were already a lot of students there which I followed inside.

The moment I stepped through the door a cooling sensation overcame me. Before I realized it all the sweat that I had accumulated disappeared. The smell that came along with it was also gone. I looked around and saw many tables and plates of food. It was rather loud.

Most would think it would seem kind of stuffy in there but that wasn't the case. There were multiple floors where you could eat, open windows, potted plants, and some other things.

I walked around for a bit before arriving at a line. I looked ahead and saw that it was the line for food so I patiently waited. Thankfully the line moved quickly and within minutes I was up to get my food.

I grabbed a plate alongside silverware that was wrapped in a napkin. I looked at it weirdly since I wasn't used to it. My family used wooden utensils and plates. I didn't think much of it and looked at the food ahead and the people serving it.

The servers were adults and there were no options. As I walked through they gave me beef, chicken, beans, cabbage, carrots, some crackers with a side of soup with unknown contents. I looked at the food I had in a daze.

' Do they expect me to be able to eat all of this? Aren't they afraid of food waste? Not that I was planning on wasting any in the first place. '

I looked around for a place to sit. I didn't want to be around too many people so it took a while. I eventually found a seat towards the side. I walked over and sat down. I didn't take note of the people around me as I began to eat. After the first bite my mood was greatly improved.

' I don't even like vegetables or most green things yet I like this. Maybe they put some kind of rare ingredient in it or something. '

As I was enjoying my meal a group of kids sat nearby. There were about 5 of them and they were pretty loud. It wasn't hard for me to ignore them but one of them ended up bumping into me. He turned around.

" Sorry about that. "

"It's fine." He turned back to his friends.

" Look, you're making me bump into people."

"Don't blame me. You need to pay more attention. "

I grinned a bit at their conversation but I mostly ignored them. Eventually I finished and deposited my tray into some bottomless can. I stretched a bit before I walked back out into the sun.

I wasn't sure what time it was but I was tired. On my way back however I saw a girl with purple hair who seemed lost. She was sweating heavily although no one seemed to approach her.

' There doesn't seem to be any teachers around. I don't really want to help either. I'm not even sure if she really is lost. '

I walked by her but I soon turned around since It would weigh on my conscious if I didn't. I tapped her on her shoulder causing her to turn around. She was a but shorter than me.

" Do you need some help? " She had an exhausted look on her face.

" Do you know where the dining hall is? I'm supposed to meet my friends there but I'm bad with directions. " I looked at her weirdly.

' If she's bad with directions why didn't she tag along with her friends? Maybe she didn't think about that or perhaps they just left her. The Dining Hall is about 15 minutes away though and I just came from there. '

I thought about it for a second and I just decided to take her there myself.

" Follow me. I just came from there and it's about 15 minutes away. " She sighed in relief as I started walking back to the Dining Hall.

I wasn't annoyed by having to do so despite the fact that I was starting to feel tired. I just thought of it as an extended walk.
