Levels to Zero

Chapter 11: The guardians

She stared at Anna in shock, wondering how and when she became related to the asshole from the night before.

Anna was blonde with the biggest clearest brown eyes she had ever seen, and she was cheery, a freaking delight.

The man who had tackled her like she had stolen his family ottoman was not. He was everything Anna wasn't, he was rude and mean, rugged and hard, in the best places.

She shook her head, she wasn't supposed to think of him that way, he was an entitled asshole, who had wished her death.

She thought hard about it, she supposed that Anna's level, had given her a different look, and as such her elf like features couldn't be traced back to that of her brothers.

 Frost

She had to say, the name fit him quite well.

He was a cold-blooded asshole whose ass needed to taste her foot as she shoved it far up his ass.

 Entitled prick.

"He is my commander in chief, I apologize for his actions, he was just being-"

"An asshole?" Xena provided interrupting Ryan.

Once again, the older lady stared at her like she was made of pure gold, like she was an enigma.

"You aren't used to not saying what you want, are you?" Ryan questioned.

Xena shook her head; "Not when it comes to big assholes, no offense guys"

"Did anything else happen last night?" Ryan asked, relaxing into her chair.

Xena froze for a second, she didn't want to tell Ryan about the harsh words her second in command her uttered. His words had gutted her, and that was something she couldn't deny, no matter how hard she tried.

No matter how hard she tried to ignore his words, they stung. And she didn't know what hurt more, the fact that he said them or the fact that he had taken one look at her and deemed her a weakling, and wished her death.

No matter how many times she had heard people wishing her the worse, it never got less scary hearing it.

Before another word could be uttered in the room, three people walked in, and of course the universe had to be cruel and have her assailant from the night before be one of them, hell he was leading the group.

When Ryan had asked him to make himself available in the clinic with the rest of the other guardians, he had thought that perhaps they had found another mutant, one with potential this time.

But stepping in and Xena had him rolling his eyes, he knew she was way more trouble than she was worth. She was probably a princess who lived off of her politician father's money. She was going to be the weakest link, and she was going to slow them down.

But a part of him was curious on what brought her here, right back into the clinic, it hadn't even been up to day that she just left and she was right back

Ryan cast a look at him, one filled with disappointment, and he knew he had fucked up, but he was confused, what had he done? He just got here.

"Xena, these are my three guardians, Frost, my second in command, he is a level two, Kai, level 3 and Tiana level 4, one of them will be assigned to you, to help you get the hang of this place" Ryan introduced.

"Great, so one of them is going to be my ward, what am I a prisoner?" Xena asked.

She had come to realize that she turned to sarcasm whenever she was threatened or afraid. And right now, she was very afraid, because her new-found enemy, Frost, was so high up the ladder she doubted she could touch him.

A part of her prayed it would be that way, she didn't want to be near him.

She looked at all three guardian's, Frost, Kai who gave her a small reassuring smile that she returned to the annoyance of Frost, and then Tiana who stared at her like she had stolen something from her, unless the life she was currently leaving was once Tiana's, she didn't see why the girl would look at her that way.

She prayed that her warden would be Kai, he looked nice enough, Tiana looked like she wanted to slit her throat, and Frost who had rolled his eyes when he saw her on the make shift bed in the clinic had made it known that life was the least of his concern.

Even though he was that put her here in the first place.

And then she felt it, a bubbling feeling building up inside her chest, it was strong she had to take a gulp of air, what was this?

Was she dying again, she looked up, her eyes catching Kai's, and it felt like she was about to vomit butterflies

 That was very disturbing.

But then she noticed that Kai wasn't looking at her so he couldn't have been the one who was making her feel this way, and Tiana was still shooting her glares, so unless Tiana had the power to actually send her to her second grave with those killer eyes, she wasn't the one doing it either.

She didn't even consider frost because he was currently having a quiet conversation with Ryan by the side.

But then she looked at Kai again.

What was he looking at? She questioned, following his line of sight till they landed on Anna.

 Anna

Anna was blushing like a woman whose lover had whispered something dirty into her ear, while casting shy glances at Kai.

Xena paused for a minute, trying and failing to identify Anna's powers, hell, she had forgotten all that she had been taught in the orphanage, her mind foggy.

But it didn't matter, she was certain she was feeling all of Anna's emotions, and she felt like she was interrupting something she shouldn't even have noticed.

She snaps her head in the direction of Ryan at the sound of her chair scraping the wooden floors, the other two doing the same.

"Xena, I hope you get better, but in a few minutes, you will be summoned into my office for your mirroring ceremony. Have a nice day." and with that, Ryan and her guardians leave the room, leaving Xena in shock.

How was she supposed to get better in a few minutes?

Have a nice day? Her day already started off shitty yesterday.

And what in the god's name was a mirroring ceremony?
