Chapter 142: Talk with Yorina
"Pseudo Fairies?" Jaden mumbled with a surprised expression and asked, "Are you saying that those devouring pups are Pseudo Fairies?"
Yorina nodded and explained, "Yes. Do you know any magic that enables us to devour things? Both of them are fairies with a similar power, but..."
He frowned and mumbled, "But?"
"They haven't awakened yet... we know of their powers because the Cerberus of the Flaming Castle had a similar ability — it could devour the flames to make itself stronger," she said.
His brows arched up and he asked, "They haven't awakened yet?"
A smile appeared on her face as she thought, 'So he doesn't have them just because of their ability... no wonder Maria likes him that much.'
She nodded and explained, "Just like how we have to set foot inside the Dream realm to awaken, fairies have to enter the heavenly tree within the Spirit realm... but unlike us, they fall into a slumber before they awaken."
His expression darkened, he clenched his fists and muttered in a slightly furious tone, "Slumber...? Where are they right now?"
Her smile widened, she leaned back in her chair and replied in a soft tone, "They are in the Spirit realm with Yuka."
'This bitch! How dare she?!' He cursed inwardly but didn't dare show it outwardly.
He leaned back in his chair, rubbed his face and took a few deep breaths before asking, "How long till they come back?"
She tapped her chin in thought and answered after a few seconds, "Three months to a year... if I remember correctly." She finished and smiled.
He smiled and thought, 'I would like nothing more than wiping that smile off her stupid face right now.'
"Now that we are done with that... let's get onto the important questions," she said, and her smile vanished.
Suddenly, Jaden felt as if he was sitting not before a person but before the Grim Reaper. He lowered his head, looked at his trembling hands and muttered, "What the..."
But before he could continue with his own meaningless thoughts, she asked in a deadly, flat tone, "Tell me... student Jaden, what gave you the confidence to go beyond my orders?"
Confused by her words, he asked with a tilted head, "What do you mean?"
She smiled, but it wasn't the same as before... it was a cold with no warmth in it.
Jaden felt a shiver down his spine. His eyes widened as a thought appeared in his mind like a thunderclap, 'Don't tell me she knows about me entering the restricted districts?!'
Yorina tapped the table and spoke, "Rules exist because curious people can't stop crossing the line between what they can do and what they should not..."
She pointed a finger at him and continued. "And you are one of the most curious people I have ever seen... so curious in fact that you do not even fear me, who could kill you within a moment and without anyone knowing it."
Jaden looked into her eyes, and unlike how she had expected him to cower under her borderline threat, a wide grin split his face.
He leaned forward and responded in a sharp and confident tone, "You jest, Principal… No one will know? When half the academy already heard about my visit with you, or... are you implying that the Imperial Palace isn't safe enough for the very students giving everything of theirs to protect what's ours?"
She looked into his confident and defiant full eyes for a few moments and replied flatly, "You appear to be quite good with the words... But have you given a thought to whether anyone would care about you after I snap that beautiful neck of yours?"
Jaden's grin didn't falter; instead, it widened, reaching the realm of impossibility as he responded to her not-so-borderline threat, "I'm sure I'm nothing more than dust before you… But you see, I've shown enough of myself to a few particular people. I'd like to think I've earned a few romantics of my own."
She turned her head to the left and asked, "Is that true... Zaria Benedictus?"
He frowned and turned his head to the right.
Swsshhh!
Suddenly, the shadows that had blanketed the left wall into their dark vanished, and Zaria, who was leaning against the wall, came into their vision.
She stepped forward and glanced at Jaden before answering, "He is. The sovereign did come to see him, but..." She turned her head towards him and spoke in a sharp voice, "He was too busy to meet Him."
'What is going on today?' He cursed his luck and lowered his head in thought, 'So the Shadow Sovereign came to see me...? Only if I had come out of the [Epiphany Zone]. Well, I'm sure that I'll meet him soon.'
"The Shadow Sovereign came to meet him...?" Yorina muttered with a surprised look.
Zaria nodded at her words and said while pointing a finger at him, "He is more useful alive than dead... so you don't have to worry about him."
'Why is she saying it like I am some kind of object?' He thought with a dumbfounded look.
Yorina shifted her eyes between the two of them for a few moments before she heaved a sigh and asked, "Tell me, why did you step into the restricted districts?"
'Ah! I was right, huh...' he thought and glanced at Zaria before answering in a low voice, "I had my reasons."
Yorina blinked a few times and let out a hollow chuckle before she said, "I am sure you did, but you are misunderstanding something."
He frowned and asked, "What?"
She smiled warmly and answered, "That I care about your reasons."
He pressed his lips into a thin line at her sharp reply and gave her a faint nod as he thought, 'What should I do? I have to somehow get her on my side but I can't tell her about the system... not at how things are going right now. Do I have no other way?'
The room fell into silence, and it continued to stretch as Zaria and Yorina stared at him while he thought of a way to get Yorina on his side.
Yorina's lips parted to break the unnecessary silence, but before she said anything. A soft, childlike voice resounded in her head.
Yori... let him be.
She frowned and replied inwardly, 'What are you saying, Yuka? How can I just... let him be?'
It's for the good.
'What are you talking about?' She asked in confusion.
She... told me to tell you that you should side with him...
'Who is she?'
She.
Her eyes widened, and she inquired further, 'You don't mean... Her, do you?'
There's no one else who can make me ask you to do something without a reason.
Yorina turned silent and looked at him with gleaming eyes as she thought, 'Who are you that even... She wants me to side with you?'
She let out a loud sigh that pulled him out of his thoughts.
He looked at her with a frown and his lips parted to answer, but before he could say anything, she stood up from her chair and said as she left, "We will continue this talk at some other time."
He watched her leave in confusion and muttered, "What was that?"
"Who knows..." Zaria mumbled beside him.
He turned his head to her, took out the black card from his pocket and asked, "What am I supposed to do with this?"
Zaria took a seat at the table, looked at the card in his hand and replied flatly, "Show it to anyone from the Shadow Order and they will give their best to help you."
He nodded and said in a confused tone, "I see... But how am I supposed to do that when I can't even find them?"
She stared at him with a deadpan look and offered a dark ring to him, "Take this."
He glanced at the ring and muttered, "I have no plans of getting married yet…"
A vein throbbed at her forehead. She threw the ring at him and snapped, "I don't want to marry a womaniser either!"
"Huh? What are you talking about?" He asked with a puzzled look.
Zaria looked at him with a dark look and spat, "Acting innocent, are we? Isn't Selina supposed to be your girlfriend... but I've always seen you with Maria instead of her..."
Jaden frowned and thought, 'She is right in a way, but...' he shook his head and answered, "Maria and I aren't close in that manner. We are simply using each other for our goals."
She nodded and asked, "Why are you explaining yourself to me?"
His lips curved up into a smile as he answered, "We need to have some kind of trust, don't you think? We're going to be working together, after all."
She looked at the ceiling, closed her eyes, and heaved a deep sigh before speaking, "So, you want to use me the same way you used the others. And yet, you claim you're not a womaniser… how hypocritical."
"I may be a hypocrite," he said with a faint smile, "but I'm no womaniser."
