In front of Lucas lay a lineup of tools, varying in size and design. They were neatly arranged on the rock slab in his workshop. While there were plenty of tools he had crafted throughout the day, Lucas's gaze remained fixed on one in particular. His eyes glinted with both pride and surprise as he admired the tool.
'The Improvised Saw has a skill that'll make cutting smoother than ever,' Lucas thought, excitement bubbling within him.
Quickly, he grabbed the Improvised Saw and the Drawknife before heading upstairs. As he opened the shelter's gate, curious eyes turned toward him.
John, about to ask if Lucas had finished, froze when he saw the tools in Lucas's hands.
"Sheesh! What's all that?!" Haley exclaimed, one hand on her waist and the other clutching her head in astonishment.
"The equipment I was working on is complete. Now, we can finally process the big trees," Lucas replied with a grin. Everyone noticed his genuine smile—it had been a while since they had seen such a heartfelt expression from him, a smile that only appeared when progress was made or his people benefited.
"Can I see?" Barney asked, stepping forward to inspect the tools, particularly the spiky metallic saw in Lucas's hand.
"Sure, just don't hurt yourself," Lucas said, handing over the saw. Though eager to start his project, he knew this moment was important.
"…What?" Barney muttered, his pale face glued to the saw. His dilated eyes betrayed that he was reading its description.
John moved closer to inspect the tools as well. His eyes widened as he looked from the saw to Lucas, who stood brimming with pride.
"This saw has a skill, Lucas? How?" John asked, genuine curiosity in his voice.
"When your crafting proficiency reaches a certain level, your creations start gaining skills. These are usually passive, but I managed to create an active one this time," Lucas explained.
The conversation drew others in, as there wasn't much entertainment in the shelter. Even a small change in mood was welcomed.
"You really are something, Lucas," Haley said, patting his shoulder.
"Oh, please. This is nothing compared to your cooking, Haley," Lucas replied politely.
"You're lucky Sarah's not here. She'd kill me and you with her stare. Why do you talk like that?" Haley teased, tugging at his shoulder. Lucas shook his head with a faint smile.
"Oh, so being polite is a crime now?"
"Enough, you two. Just let it go. We all know Lucas is weird," Jerry interjected, rolling his eyes. He gave the tools a glance, lost interest when he realized they weren't weapons, and returned to the corner to practice his tank skills.
"Hahaha… I know, right? You are weird," Haley laughed aloud. Lucas stayed quiet, only smiling. He was eager for the chatter to end so he could focus on his project.
John picked up the saw, examining the perfectly aligned spikes. He tried pricking his finger and realized it wasn't just an aesthetically pleasing tool—it was razor-sharp.
"Want to test it out now?" John asked as he returned the tool to Lucas, who nodded.
"I'll join you," John declared.
"Me too!"
"Me too!"
"Gah! Me too!"
Lucas looked at the overexcited group and couldn't help but laugh. Leading the way, he moved toward a fallen tree near the shelter's defenses.
"It'd be better if you came out too, Bill," Lucas called.
A shadow emerged from John's own, joining the group. The sight was so routine that no one batted an eye.
Lucas aligned the saw at the center of the massive tree. With a skilled swipe, the teeth embedded into the wood, producing a gritty sawing sound.
He followed up with another rhythmic swipe, driving the saw deeper into the tree.
Smiling, Lucas continued his steady, rhythmic cuts, glancing occasionally at the durability, which decreased by a point every few minutes.
The group watched the process with satisfaction. Even small animals and monsters peeked out from their hiding spots—bushes, roots, and tall grass—to observe the source of the noise.
It was the start of something both primitive and innovative, and everyone present felt privileged to witness it.
THUD!
As the tree split apart with a loud thud, Lucas wiped his brow, a small, satisfied smile creeping onto his face. The improvised saw had proven itself beyond expectations, and he couldn't wait to see how much more it could handle.
"Well, that's one way to start the day," John said, grinning as he inspected the neatly split wood.
"Yeah, this thing's a monster for something so rough-looking. I didn't expect it to work in his first try." Barney muttered, the astonishment still in his eyes.
Lucas chuckled. "Sometimes it's not about how it looks, but how it works."
He ran his fingers along the edge of the cut, marveling at the precision despite the saw's rudimentary design.
