Legendary FBI Detective

Chapter 583: The Killer - Mental Issues Don't Imply Low Intelligence

"They must be mother and daughter."

Hearing Chenier's question, Luo An took out a photo frame and handed it to her, saying:

"This is the photo I found in the right bedroom."

Chenier took the photo frame and discovered two women sitting on a sofa.

The woman on the left, with a withered face and reluctantly grinning at the camera, was Josephine.

The woman on the right had black short hair, a delicate face, a radiant smile, and two small dimples on her cheeks, indeed that unknown girl.

After giving the photo back to Luo An, uncertainty crossed Chenier's face even more:

"But didn't you say before that Josephine has no childbirth records?"

"The possibility that the girl was picked up by Josephine can't be ruled out."

Luo An turned and left the kitchen, waving his hand for Chenier to follow, and added:

"Moreover, this is after all a federation, giving birth doesn't necessarily require a hospital."

The federation is a free democratic country with relatively simple folk customs.

Giving birth, this trivial matter, apart from hospital wards, trash bins, bathrooms, public restrooms, even on the streets, are no problem for the citizens of the federation.

As long as they have a pair of scissors, they can demonstrate what is called a miracle of life.

Hearing Luo An's answer and thinking of similar incidents, Chenier's face turned rather grim as she followed Luo An into the right bedroom. She snapped back to reality and asked:

"What have you found?"

"Check the bathroom."

Luo An pushed the door and entered the bathroom. Guided by his direction, Chenier looked around and saw a bathtub.

Near the seam next to the bathtub, there were many tiny crimson traces.

Clearly, this was the place where the girl dealt with Josephine's body.

Chenier was silent for a few seconds, took a deep breath, and asked:

"What do we do next?"

Luo An led Chenier out of the right bedroom, casually saying:

"We wait for the rabbit."

Previously, they had learned from the laundry shop manager that every day around three or four o'clock in the afternoon, the black-haired girl would return home.

Since the front door had been kicked down by Luo An and it was difficult to repair quickly, Luo An along with Reesi and Chenier, temporarily borrowed a neighbor's room.

After waiting quietly for a long time, suddenly the elevator doors opened, and the black-haired girl, humming a nursery rhyme, carrying a bag of groceries, slowly walked towards her room.

"Mom, I'm back."

Reaching the front door, as the black-haired girl spoke, she took out her keys to unlock the door.

But just as she inserted the key into the door lock, the door unexpectedly collapsed inward with a bang.

"???"

Staring at the fallen door before her, the black-haired girl was full of confusion.

Just then, Luo An, Mona, and Chenier rushed out from the neighboring room all holding guns, commanding sternly:

"Don't move!"

"Put your hands behind your head!"

"..."

The black-haired girl paused for a moment, then grinned and suddenly pulled out a dagger from her pocket, not attacking Reesi and Chenier, who were closest to her, but plunged it towards her own chest.

Ding—

The next second, Luo An moved rapidly, his figure instantly flickering in front of the black-haired girl, forcefully taking the dagger and throwing it aside, and swiftly handcuffed her wrists.

Looking at Luo An's handsome face close by, the black-haired girl's smile widened, and she softly asked:

"Hello, my name is Lily, what's yours?"

————

Several hours later, at 8:30 PM, in a temporarily borrowed office on New York Long Island.

The interrogation room's door opened, and a white female with gold-rimmed glasses and a delicate face emerged, waving the folder in her hand seriously:

"Group Leader Luo An, your conjecture was correct; this girl named Lily has severe mental issues."

Hearing this, Reesi and Chenier's expressions darkened, Luo An's expression remained unchanged, and he asked:

"Can you elaborate on that?"

"Of course."

The female psychologist, temporarily borrowed from another department by Luo An, nodded and introduced:

"This girl named Lily not only suffers from mental disorders induced by psychoactive substances, namely delusions, but also schizophrenia, antisocial personality disorder, and pica."

"Pica?"

Hearing this word, Reesi and Chenier looked puzzled because, when they arrested Lily before, the ingredients she bought were all normal food.

In response to the question posed by Reesi and Chenier, the female psychologist closed the folder, took a deep breath, and said:

"But she ate her own mother, the lady you referred to as Josephine."

"..."

Reesi and Chenier suddenly fell silent. Before Luo An could ask, the psychologist continued:

"Furthermore, the deaths of Bloom and Hannah that you were investigating, Lily has admitted she was responsible.

Lily was a child picked up by Josephine, who later met and became involved with Bloom. Bloom also made advances towards Lily.

Josephine ignored these incidents from start to finish, and even joined in their games, which filled Lily with resentment."

Reesi and Chenier looked even more distressed, Luo An paused for a few seconds, then asked:

"What does Hannah have to do with this?"

"Lily's initial target was only to kill the man Bloom for revenge.

Later, during an argument between Bloom and Hannah, Lily preemptively attacked and killed Bloom from behind."

The psychologist answered:

"As for why Lily killed Hannah, it was because Hannah and Josephine had a similar stature and height, and both had brown hair.

Lily's hatred for Josephine was not diminished, so after knocking down Bloom, Lily mistook Hannah for her mother Josephine and killed her.

When she returned home and saw blood, Lily couldn't control her emotions. When Josephine was incapacitated from sniffing flour, Lily killed her again.

But years of upbringing made Lily grateful to Josephine, so she left Josephine's head, pretending her mother was still alive, cooking for her and keeping her company every day."

"..."

After the psychologist finished, the room fell silent. Reesi's expression was dark, and Chenier clenched her fists with rapid breathing.

Through the glass of the interrogation room door, Luo An saw Lily giving him a smile. He paused for a moment and shook hands with the psychologist:

"Thank you, it's been hard."

"You're welcome."

After exchanging a few pleasantries, Luo An had Chenier see the psychologist out.

Watching their departing figures, Reesi took a deep breath and asked:

"Luo An, what's next?"

Luo An closed his eyes and rubbed his temples, saying:

"Wait for the results of Lily's psychological assessment, then hand her over to the mental health management center."

Reesi frowned tightly:

"But..."

Luo An turned to look at her, his expression serious:

"But what? Reesi, there are two things you must not forget or confuse.

First, Lily has just confessed that her murder weapon was a baseball bat and disclosed where it was discarded. I will ask Winslow to lead a team to investigate and search for it.

Second, having a mental issue doesn't mean being unintelligent. Lily is no fool; she knows very well what's good or bad for her."

Without discussing further with Reesi, Luo An patted her shoulder, saying:

"After all, Lily has killed an innocent person; we'll proceed with things according to normal procedure."

Heading into the conference room, Luo An made a phone call. After handling the aftermath of the case and waiting for the department responsible for mental health to take Lily away, everyone left the office area.

In the hotel room, Mona washed up and walked out of the bathroom in a bathrobe, murmuring lowly:

"What a tragic case."

"..."

Hearing no reply from Luo An, Mona put down the towel for drying her hair and looked toward the living room to see Luo An sitting on the sofa, deep in thought over the information spread on the coffee table.

"Hey, it's off the clock now, my investigation group leader."

Mona folded the towel into a square, covering Luo An's eyes from behind, and said:

"It's time to rest."

"Let's talk about rest later."

Luo An pulled the towel from his eyes and frowned, saying:

"The second serial murder case, I suddenly feel something familiar."
