Chapter 577: [The Serial Killings Spanning Over a Decade]
Wednesday, 10:30 AM, New York Long Island, in a temporarily borrowed office.
Pushing open the main entrance to the office area, Luo An entered with Mona, somewhat wearily saying:
"Sorry, we're back late."
"Must have been tough."
Michelle immediately stood up to pour coffee for the two of them, while Reesi came out of the conference room next door, and seeing that Luo An and Mona were quite dusty and disheveled, she asked with a hint of confusion:
"What have you two been doing? Fall into a pit?"
"We didn't fall into a pit, but we've dug quite a few."
Mona picked up the coffee on the table, drained it in one gulp, let out a deep breath, and answered:
"After we arrived at the beach yesterday afternoon, an old woman's dog unearthed a human skeleton in the bushes.
Winslow and I were going to have the skeleton taken back for testing, then go to interview the informant's family, but Luo An called for several police dogs to be brought over."
Hearing this, Michelle looked puzzled, but Reesi seemed to think of something and looked at Luo An, asking:
"Do you suspect there are more bodies on that beach?"
"It was just a guess."
Luo An set down his coffee cup, resignedly saying:
"But I didn't expect we'd actually find any."
From the moment he drove onto the beach in Long Island, Luo An had found the area's geographic conditions to be "quite favorable."
Firstly, the area was large; it spanned about 10 kilometers from east to west. Moreover, the trees and underbrush were thick, making it difficult to see clearly into the area from the road at night.
The communities nearby weren't very close to this beach either, requiring a long walking time, which made it difficult for any incidents on the beach to be discovered.
In short, from an assassin's perspective, this beach was an ideal spot for murdering and disposing of bodies.
As such, upon discovering the skeleton unearthed by the pet dog, Luo An had the idea to thoroughly search the beach.
After listening to Luo An's description, Michelle's face subtly changed, Reesi's eyelid twitched, and she asked:
"So, how many more bodies did you find?"
"Just dug up on the beach, there are nine, and they have been sent to the forensic examination department."
Luo An rubbed his temples, his voice low and somewhat irritable:
"Besides that, there's a local resident who often comes to this area for fishing. He was panicked when he learned of this and revealed something else.
Behind the rocks on the southeast corner of the beach, sometimes the tide washes up some clothing and other items. He's even fished wallets from that spot before.
We suspect that there might be more bodies under the sea in that area, and Winslow is currently leading a team to investigate."
"..."
After hearing Luo An's explanation, Michelle and Reesi looked at each other in silence.
Luo An poured himself another cup of coffee and asked:
"Chenier?"
"She's in forensic examination."
Michelle replied:
"The previous examination of those bodies by the Long Island police was very crude, leading to chaotic and very unreliable results.
We can only retrieve the remaining bodies and have the forensic examination department redo the autopsy."
"Good."
Luo An nodded his head, following up with:
"Have you retrieved all the information on the victims?"
"It's all in the conference room."
After a short break, everyone entered the conference room, where Reesi took a whiteboard and stuck 11 photos on it, introducing:
"Arranged by the time the bodies were found, the eleven victims' names and ages are:
Ili, female, 20 years old.
Cleo, female, 19 years old.
Laura, female, 25 years old.
Charles, male, 21 years old.
Selena, female, 20 years old.
James, male, 30 years old.
Kate, female, 22 years old.
Mandy, female, 26 years old.
Jerome, male, 18 years old.
Sofia, female, 22 years old.
Lan Rui Sha, female, 24 years old."
Seeing the photos of the men on the whiteboard, Mona was slightly surprised:
"There are three males?"
"Yes.
Reesi nodded, then took out photos of the three male bodies when they were found, and handed them to Luo An, Mona, and Michelle, explaining:
"Among the males, the first male victim, Charles, was dressed in women's clothes at the time of death, and his makeup and appearance also tended towards feminine."
As for the second victim, James, and the third victim, Jerome, they were wearing normal male attire."
"Um..."
After glancing at the photo of the first male victim, Charles, Mona frowned and pushed it aside, turning to Luo An and said:
"So, there are 11 bodies, 11 victims.
Plus the 9 bodies we just discovered, are there really 20 victims on this beach?"
"Don't forget one thing, Mona."
Luo An put down the photo in his hand, pulled a grim smile, and said:
"Winslow is still busy at the beachside; who knows, there might be more surprises over there."
"…Fu-k!"
Mona's mouth twitched involuntarily, letting out a low curse, then Luo An continued to look at Reesi and asked:
"What were the occupations and jobs of these eleven victims before their death?"
Reesi searched through a folder and introduced:
"Ili, was a shape worker.
Cleo, a shape worker.
Laura, a shape worker.
Charles, untraceable.
Selena, a shape worker.
James, untraceable.
Kate, a shape worker.
Mandy, untraceable.
Jerome, untraceable.
Sofia, a shape worker.
Lan Rui Sha, a shape worker."
"There are too many people, it's hard to remember just by introduction."
Luo An stood up from his chair, took the folder from Reesi's hand, and wrote down all the information of the eleven victims below their photos on the whiteboard.
Mona, puzzled, looked at Reesi and asked:
"What does 'untraceable' mean above?"
"It means just that."
Reesi sat in the chair beside the conference table and handed a folder to Mona, explaining:
"The main reasons for the 'untraceable' are threefold:
First, the time since the victims' deaths is so long that many details were not thoroughly investigated by Long Island police back then, so now we can't find them.
Second, most of these victims lived alone, without much family or friends, making it difficult to find out what they did for a living.
Third, some of the victims did have family and friends, but either these relatives and friends had ordinary relationships and didn't know what the victims did before their death;
Or these relatives and friends have left New York State, or even left this world due to illness, accidents, etc., so we can't find the relevant information."
"This is really..."
Looking at the information in her hands, Mona felt tense and was experiencing a headache when Luo An suddenly spoke up:
"Michelle, please take the trouble to borrow another whiteboard... borrow three whiteboards."
Mona and Reesi looked up at Luo An, noticing that the whiteboard in front of the conference table only had six victims' photos posted, with Luo An's written information, the whole whiteboard was already filled with no spare space.
"I will go right now."
Michelle nodded, promptly got up, and left the conference room.
Looking at the dense textual information on the whiteboard, and the photos of the five victims whose information had not yet been arranged next to it, Mona only felt her scalp tingle. After pondering for a few seconds, she quietly suggested:
"Luo An, why don't you give Vireness a call and ask her to send some people to help?"
"The call definitely needs to be made, but not right now."
Luo An shook his head, his eyes slightly narrowed as he looked at the information on the whiteboard and said:
"I feel like I've already found some interesting clues."
Mona and Reesi's eyes lit up, about to ask questions, when Luo An's phone suddenly rang:
"This is Luo An."
"It's me, Winslow."
Hearing Winslow's voice on the other end of the line, Mona and Reesi perked up, Luo An said:
"I hope you can tell me some good news, like there was nothing at the bottom of the sea, and you've been busy for nothing."
"I wish it were so."
At the beach, Winslow looked at the objects just pulled out by the divers, chuckled bitterly, and said:
"We found two bodies at the bottom of that sea."
Hearing this, Mona and Reesi simultaneously closed their eyes and covered their foreheads with their hands, Luo An helplessly rubbed his temples and asked:
"How is the decay of the bodies? Can you roughly determine the time of the victims' death?"
Without waiting for Winslow to respond, Mona's phone suddenly rang. She pressed the answer button and found it was Chenier:
"Mona, tell Luo An... no, you all need to come to the autopsy room immediately!"
