Legendary FBI Detective

Chapter 548: Power, Clues, New Discoveries

FBI Washington Headquarters Office.

Mr. Clement's question fell, and Vireness's face slightly changed, while Luo An fell silent.

It's not that Luo An didn't want to answer, but apart from some not-so-nice greetings, there weren't many other things to say.

Silence is also an attitude. Mr. Clement looked at Luo An for a few seconds and suddenly laughed:

"Don't be nervous, just asking casually."

Luo An grinned a little, not exactly nervous, but he was reminded of some things.

Before coming to the Washington Headquarters, Luo An had asked Reesi and Mona to briefly investigate some people's information and political orientations.

Mr. Clement, Vireness, Trick Kennedy, and others, viewed ethnically, were all Anglo-Saxons, also known as Angsa.

In the 13th investigation team, the agents Mona, Reesi, Chenier, Winslow, Michelle, all are European descendants, not Jews.

Luo An Greenwood's parents were not Jews either; they were immigrants from Europe to the Federation from generations past.

The only Jew Luo An knew was Antoine, the Minister of Professional Responsibility Office.

Antoine's secretary, Yulaya, wasn't Jewish, but he had married a Jewish wife.

Thinking of this, Luo An suddenly realized something.

If he remembered correctly, the information he and Vireness just investigated showed that the senator was from Angsa, but Osmon and Vivian, both of their parents were Jewish.

Working in the Federation Government, the most important thing is to choose a side.

Mr. Clement wanted to take a position in the Department of Justice, and there was simply no avoiding that.

A shimmer of understanding passed through Luo An's eyes, and sure enough, within a few minutes, Mr. Clement coughed lightly and said:

"Vireness, Luo An, continue investigating this case, but be cautious and wait for a phone call before arresting anyone."

"Understood."

Vireness and Luo An nodded simultaneously, comprehending the order—it was not difficult for them to understand; they were focused on the case itself, whereas Mr. Clement was concerned about the politics behind it.

Stepping out of the office, Luo An walked with his head down, silently pondering Mr. Clement's possible actions.

As he absentmindedly returned to Investigation Team 13, Luo An pushed open the office area door and asked:

"How's the investigation going?"

"No clues."

At her workstation, Mona was spinning in her chair, and upon hearing Luo An's question, she replied helplessly:

"The cybersecurity measures of that research institution are extremely strict; I can't access any information."

"What?"

Knowing Mona's computer skills, Luo An was slightly surprised:

"You can't get into that research institution? What's the deal with this institution?"

"It's not really a big-name, jointly funded by a university and a company."

Michelle handed Luo An a cup of coffee, smiling as she explained:

"However, the research institution doesn't receive much funding each year, which leads to outdated equipment. The computers are mostly used as data storage without internet access, so Mona can't hack into them."

Luo An: "..."

Mona spread her hands; no matter how skilled, she couldn't hack a computer that wasn't connected to the internet.

"OK."

Luo An massaged his temples and said helplessly:

"Then let's wait for Winslow and their investigation results."

After finishing, Luo An turned and went back to the team leader's office; this investigation had accrued significant expenses, and he needed to briefly process and calculate.

Three hours later, Reesi, Winslow, and Chenier each returned to the office area carrying a cardboard box.

"Good work."

Luo An grabbed a piece of food that had just been delivered from the cafeteria and handed it to Reesi, smiling:

"What did you find?"

Reesi took the food, stuffed it into her mouth, and spoke while eating:

"That research institution is very poor, whether it's the professors, researchers, or students, they all have a habit of making extra money on the side.

They take some orders from society, keep a small part of the earnings for themselves, and the majority of the money is handed over to maintain the normal operations of the institution, allowing them to continue their research."

Mona and Michelle looked at each other; they knew the research institution was impoverished, but they didn't expect it to be to this extent.

Chenier added:

"The professors and students within that institution are very united. We couldn't get any information about who helped Nockvic with the testing.

However, due to our FBI identity, two professors eventually handed over Nockvic's test report on the items, as well as the surveillance video from outside their research institution, to us."

"Well done."

Luo An handed the surveillance video to Mona. Winslow rummaged through a cardboard box for a moment and handed a piece of paper to Luo An, saying:

"This is the report, but I can't understand it."

Luo An took the paper, looked at it for a few seconds without changing his expression, and passed it to Michelle next to him.

Seeing this, Reesi laughed and Luo An casually picked up a snack and tapped her on the head.

Winslow and Chenier, sitting nearby, bowed their heads eating, selectively ignoring the interaction between Luo An and Reesi.

"This is a pharmaceutical test report."

Michelle, being the most knowledgeable and well-informed person present, took the paper and scrutinized it for a while before speaking:

"Within the designed scope, the proportion of the response value to the concentration of the substance being tested in the sample is too low, UV and HPLC methods..."

"Stop."

Before Michelle could finish, Luo An made a "T" with his hands and interrupted her:

"Can you just give us the conclusion?"

"The conclusion is that the tested pharmaceutical does not meet the standards."

Michelle pointed to the final section of the paper and said:

"The pharmacological efficacy on cancer treatment is very low, but it has a high placebo effect."

Recalling that Osmon, the pharmaceutical company's owner, used to take people to visit the company's drug laboratory before selling stocks, Luo An's eyes flickered, and a conjecture formed in his mind:

"It seems that Nockvic, under a false identity, entered that private club, successfully connected with Osmon, and visited the laboratory.

Then, Nockvic stole some pills and took them to a testing organization."

Reesi swallowed the food in her mouth and continued:

"Osmon discovered this and had Nockvic killed."

Chenier frowned slightly:

"But Osmon is promoting that investment fund with an annual yield of 17%, he could make a lot of money with a Ponzi scheme... Isn't that pharmaceutical company just a facade?"

"Why would it be a facade?"

Luo An moved the report aside:

"If the money swindled through the Ponzi scheme is invested in the pharmaceutical company to hasten the drug development.

As soon as the drug research succeeds and the company goes public, the scheme is no longer a scam but becomes an initial investment, and Osmon transforms into a successful businessman and entrepreneur."

"..."

Winslow, Chenier, Reesi, and Michelle fell silent.

Just then, Mona, who had been typing on the keyboard next door, suddenly spoke up:

"Everyone, something is found on the surveillance!"

Everyone quickly moved beside Mona, who pointed to the computer screen and said:

"This is when Nockvic entered the testing agency, captured by the surveillance video."

In the surveillance footage, Nockvic parked his car by the roadside, got out, and quickly walked into the research institution.

Mona then zoomed in on the top right corner of the surveillance screen, and after a few seconds, a black SUV slowly appeared on another street to the side.

Without waiting for others to ask, Mona immediately brought up a second surveillance video.

This was half an hour before Nockvic's death, near a corner of a street outside the park where the incident occurred, with a black SUV parked there as well.

Mona took screenshots of the two black SUVs and put them together, saying:

"This is the same vehicle."

Luo An's eyes narrowed as he asked:

"Who owns the vehicle? Can you find out?"

"The vehicle is registered under a security company."

Mona tapped a few keys and quickly pulled up the information on that security company:

"WWW Security Company, the owner of the company is... wait a minute!"

Mona was halfway through her sentence when she suddenly widened her eyes and stopped:

"The information is blocked?!"
