Chapter 53: Charlie and the Fire Dragons

The saying "You don't truly know someone until you fight them" has stood the test of time for good reason. For boys especially, nothing builds respect quite like an intense, evenly matched battle. And when that battle doesn't lead to hate, it often blossoms into something else, friendship.

That's exactly what happened.

On the third day of visiting hours, Allen's temporary teammates came to see him again, this time bringing along their new friends: the Quidditch players from Uagadou.

And from the looks of it, the two groups were getting along exceptionally well, far beyond what you'd expect from an exchange program.

In fact, right by Allen's hospital bed, they were deep in an animated discussion... about which girls at school were the prettiest. And the sexiest.

What stunned Allen most was that the most enthusiastic contributor to this conversation was the only girl among them.

He remembered her vividly, she was the one who had knocked him out of the sky with a Bludger and sent him straight to the hospital wing.

Now she slapped him heartily on the shoulder and grinned, "Didn't take you for such a tough guy! Once you're out of here, I'll introduce you to a few of the cute underclassmen from our school, don't worry, I haven't touched any of 'em!"

Allen could only respond with a cough.

A few seconds of awkward silence passed before someone suddenly realized, "Wait a sec… isn't Allen a first-year?"

Yeah. Talking about this stuff might be a bit premature.

While the group laughed sheepishly, Allen sat up in bed with a scowl. He wasn't actually hurt anymore, he was just under strict orders not to leave the hospital wing.

Seriously though... flirting with girls halfway across the world? He didn't have that much time on his hands.

As Allen straightened up, the group's attention shifted back to the real reason they'd gathered: planning for the weekend.

Let's be honest, every teenager goes through a phase where they just have to show off, especially in front of new friends. (Don't worry, this is a reference to time, not location.)

The Uagadou players, brimming with mystery, had promised their Hogwarts counterparts a surprise once Allen was discharged.

Now, it wasn't that the Uagadou headmaster was stingy about letting guests see the wonders of the school. On the contrary, it was a kind of humble extravagance.

"Sure, we're amazing. But we don't need to brag. We'll let you discover it yourself."

If you couldn't see it? That wasn't their fault, it just meant you lacked the eye to spot true greatness. That, they believed, was the mark of a truly prestigious school. Any place that had to scream its greatness in your face? Probably a glorified showboat.

Take the Triwizard Tournament for example, it was flashy, sure. But had the visiting students ever seen the unicorns in Hogwarts' Forbidden Forest? The centaurs? Had they even been inside the most culturally rich part of the school, Ravenclaw's common room?

Probably not. Even though Ravenclaw welcomed any "seeker of wisdom," they still hadn't visited.

So yeah, the wonders were there. If you missed them, that was on you.

But today? Hogwarts' temporary Quidditch squad was about to get a proper tour guide.

Never heard of him? No worries, let me tell you a story.

The next day, Allen was finally freed from the hospital. He barely had time to set foot near the Hogwarts rest area, let alone bask in any belated cheers, before he was whisked away by his eager teammates.

They were dying to experience the surprise their new Uagadou friends had hinted at.

But the surprise wasn't the only thing that took Allen's breath away, it was the hike. A real hike.

They walked nearly ten miles of rugged mountain trail.

And this wasn't a gentle stroll, these were wild paths. At times, there was no "path" at all. They had to carefully pick their way through towering rocks and twisted vegetation.

At one point, someone finally asked the obvious:

"Why aren't we just using broomsticks?"

The Quidditch captain, a tall, confident guy named Dipan, only offered a cryptic smile in response.

Just as a few of them were about to call it quits and turn back, a roar shattered the quiet.

"DOWN! They're coming!" Dipan whispered urgently.

Everyone hit the ground immediately.

Overhead, four enormous dragons, two adults and two juveniles, soared through the sky.

"Relax," Dipan said calmly. "They've all been charmed with concealment spells. As long as we stay down, we're invisible to them. This is our observation zone."

Massive. Wild. Dangerous. And yet somehow, breathtaking.

This was the mightiest of all magical beasts: the Western Fire Dragon.

Allen had no idea what breed they were, but even he had to admit, they were stunning.

Their bodies were sleek and streamlined, covered in glimmering silver scales. Their wings cast massive, cloud-like shadows on the ground below. They exhaled pillars of flame that lit up the sky, but it all moved with such grace that, if not for the scorch marks on the earth, Allen might've mistaken them for floating sculptures.

This was power. This was beauty born of brutality.

Even from this distance, Allen could feel the oppressive aura they radiated. He fought the urge to stand up. Not just his own curiosity, but even his system, was urging him:

[Warning: Highly valuable targets detected. Engage?]

No. Not now. But… maybe someday?

Dipan gestured to a massive boulder in the distance, its surface charred black.

"See that rock? That's the entrance to the dragon nest. The flames scorched it black. This is as far as we go. Any further and they'll sense us. And hey, maybe we could take one down if we all worked together… but the headmaster would lock us up for a year."

Only once the dragons had returned to their den did everyone finally stand and begin the trek back.

On the return trip, Charlie was practically buzzing with excitement. He bombarded their Uagadou guides with questions about the dragons, their habits, where they came from, what trouble they caused. The students from Uagadou answered half with pride, half with scientific flair, though to Allen, it still felt like a humblebrag.

Back at the temporary Hogwarts camp, Allen was finally greeted with a round of cheers that had been delayed since yesterday.

Professor McGonagall, unusually cheerful, even had the house-elves prepare a full British feast in their honor, a rare luxury considering they were far from home and relying solely on supplies stored inside their magical micro-castle.

The next day, just as Allen expected, Charlie came looking for him.

He needed help doing research.

Seeing those dragons yesterday had clearly left a lasting impression, and Charlie was determined to learn more. But he needed someone trustworthy to help him dig into restricted magical creature texts, and someone who wouldn't breathe a word about what they saw.

Allen was the perfect choice.

He agreed without hesitation. In fact, based on some system hints, he suspected dragons might play a role in his future. Sure, these dragons were under protection... but there were plenty of wild, unclaimed ones out there, right? Maybe even some profit to be made.

As for Charlie's growing obsession with dragons, which would eventually lead him to a life of caring for them full time?

Well... that was his business.

Pretty as they are, dragons are still second to Kanna when it comes to cuteness.
