Chapter 16: The Hufflepuff Common Room
Led by the upperclassmen, Allen and the rest of the Hufflepuff first-years descended from the upstairs dining hall, passed the grand marble staircase, and turned through a door on the right, stepping into a long corridor that ended in front of a stack of neatly arranged wooden barrels.
The leading prefect came to a halt, paused for a moment in thought, then crouched down and began tapping a rhythmic pattern on two of the barrels in the second-to-last row. The knocks were sharp and clear, and as he tapped, he whispered the house password under his breath. Once he finished the sequence, the lid of a large barrel beside him suddenly swung open.
"Remember the barrels I tapped and the password I used," the prefect said with a smile. "This term's password is Helga Hufflepuff. Of course, you're welcome to try using the wrong barrels or the wrong password... though I wouldn't recommend it."
He chuckled. "Every year, a few poor souls end up in the vinegar barrel instead of the common room because they mess it up."
One by one, they climbed into the opening. Allen soon found himself in a large, circular chamber carved seemingly beneath the ground. The walls looked like natural earth, but thanks to magic, it felt as if there was a transparent barrier between the soil and the cozy interior, keeping the space dry and warm.
A domed ceiling rose overhead, allowing silvery moonlight to pour in from above. Clearly, this used the same enchantment as the one in the Great Hall. Even underground, sunlight and moonlight could reach them without hindrance.
The decor here was more intimate than the grandeur of the Great Hall, with a touch of whimsy. Allen could spot soft, translucent green dandelions and drifting grasses glowing gently as decoration.
Most furnishings were a warm, glowing bronze. Shelves of the same metal held all sorts of magical plants, some even pulled themselves out of their pots to sing or dance. Allen didn't recognize any of them, though he could at least confirm that none were mandrakes.
Mandrakes were notorious: while most singing performances might cost money, theirs could cost your life. Their cries could attack your soul directly, basically, the botanical equivalent of a death metal concert from hell.
Next to a broad fireplace stood a long yellow sofa and armchairs covered in soft black cushions. Allen couldn't help but feel that the magic woven into the Hufflepuff common room seemed slightly more intricate than the others described in the books. But he quickly figured out why Hogwarts' very first house-elves had been sheltered by Helga Hufflepuff herself.
Compared to being persecuted by wizarding families, Hogwarts was a sanctuary. So naturally, when the castle was being built, Lady Hufflepuff might have gone the extra mile when designing her house's quarters. Allen certainly wasn't going to complain.
Still, what the newcomers needed most right now wasn't to admire the common room, it was a warm, comfortable bed. Thankfully, the prefect understood this perfectly. After directing the girls to their dorms, he led the boys to theirs.
The beds were also decorated in bronze, with thick duvets and warm curtains. After a long, exhausting day, no one even had the energy to chat. One by one, they drifted into deep sleep.
When Allen awoke the next morning, his four roommates were still snoring. He glanced at them, then thought about Hogwarts' infamous shifting staircase maze. In the end, he decided not to wait for them. After rousing them with a quick shout, he headed off alone.
He wasn't rushing to breakfast. Rather, he wanted to use the time to get a general sense of where his classrooms were for the day. Breakfast could wait, so long as he wasn't late, there would always be food.
It was worth noting that Hogwarts had a total of 142 staircases, some broad and grand, others narrow and rickety. Some only led to specific places on Fridays. Some had steps that would vanish midway up, forcing students to remember exactly where to jump.
Then there were the doors, some wouldn't open unless you asked them politely, or prodded the right spot. Others weren't doors at all, just walls disguised to look like them. Trying to memorize everything was nearly impossible; everything was always shifting. Even the portraits wandered around, and the suits of armor were known to take strolls.
Luckily, after Allen pestered an older student for a while, he let slip a useful trick: every floor had at least one staircase that never moved. It might be a bit of a detour, but compared to getting completely lost, it was the safer route.
As for memorizing all the staircases? A student from Ravenclaw once held the record, he spent two full weeks mapping them all out...
Later at breakfast, Allen ran into the Weasley twins again. He had just reached for a treacle tart when they appeared.
"Hey, Allen! How was your first night?" one asked eagerly. "I'm telling you, the Gryffindor common room is amazing!"
They didn't notice the look Allen gave them, like a seasoned veteran listening to two rookies brag about how they carried a Bronze-to-Silver promo match in a game. The twins excitedly listed every cool feature of their common room using every word they could think of.
Allen, however, could only think one thing: Boys... I'm so disappointed in you.
He knew exactly what Dumbledore's office looked like, and he'd never even been inside. These were the same twins who, in the books, explored every forbidden corner of Hogwarts with reckless brilliance. And now? They were acting like kids showing off a new toy.
Was Allen supposed to tell them that his common room, thanks to a certain anonymous Hufflepuff founder's personal touch, was actually the most luxurious?
Of course not. Allen wasn't that petty.
He simply gave them a calm, level look and said:
"I know where the kitchens are. They're right next to our common room. And the house-elves in there? Incredibly friendly."

The twins were clearly shaken by this revelation, but eventually revealed their real reason for seeking Allen out: they wanted to compare class schedules.
Though they'd already been told that different houses sometimes shared classes, the twins weren't content to wait and see. They wanted to make sure they'd be having some with their new friend.
Allen was honestly touched by the gesture, though if he knew the real reason, he might've laughed out loud. To the twins, Allen was already a senior figure, especially in the field of mischief...
