Legacy's Wake

Chapter 74: Rabbit Tophats — Act 01

The three shook off the pain in their arms, their breaths heavy as they turned to face the newly revealed door. Temoshí's patience had finally worn thin. He stepped forward, his voice cutting through the dim, oppressive silence. "Alright, Aurelio! You think these games are entertaining? How about you show yourself and join in on your 'fun'? Or are you too scared to face us head-on?" His voice echoed in the chamber, filled with frustration and defiance.

In a plush, dimly lit room surrounded by flashing screens, Aurelio leaned back in his velvet chair, an amused grin spreading across his face. He swirled a glass of wine lazily in his hand, his eyes fixed on the trio through a massive monitor. After a moment of silence, he pressed a button on the ornate console before him, his voice flowing into the chamber with a silky, theatrical charm.

"Now, now," Aurelio began, his tone playful and dripping with smugness, "such hostility! I'm the host, gentlemen, the maestro of this little carnival of fate! It wouldn't be fair to steal the spotlight, now, would it?" He snapped his fingers, the sound amplified dramatically as if to emphasize his control.

The screens in the chamber suddenly flickered to life, showing Aurelio's smirking face. He raised his glass in mock salute. "I've carefully designed these games just for you, my dear participants! Think of it as... a test of wit, strength, and most importantly, luck." He chuckled darkly. "Oh, and don't be so loud, Temoshí. It's a game room, not a boxing ring. Let's keep the shouting to a minimum, hmm?"

He leaned closer to the camera, his grin widening. "Now, why don't you be good sports and step through that lovely door? I assure you, the next event is even more exhilarating. You wouldn't want to keep my audience waiting, would you?"

The crowd outside erupted in cheers, their voices faintly audible through the walls. Tarot looked around uneasily, the noise of the spectators only heightening his nerves.

Temoshí clenched his fists but held his tongue. He glanced at the others, who nodded silently, before turning back to the screen. Aurelio's face loomed large, his eyes glinting with amusement.

"Good," Aurelio said, his voice practically purring with satisfaction. "Let the games continue! And remember, every step you take brings you closer to me. If, of course, you're lucky enough to survive." He laughed, the sound echoing hauntingly as the door to the next challenge creaked open.

"Let's go," Temoshí muttered, his determination unwavering. He stepped toward the door, the golden key clutched tightly in his hand. The others followed, steeling themselves for whatever horrors awaited them next.

As the door creaked open, the trio stepped into a vast, circular room bathed in eerie, shifting lights. Aurelio's voice echoed across the chamber again, smooth and theatrical, as though he were narrating a grand performance.

"Welcome, welcome, to the second act of our delightful show!" he proclaimed, his grin audible in his words. "I call this one... The Rabbit Run! And trust me, my dear contestants, this will separate the clever from the clumsy, the swift from the sluggish. Prepare yourselves, for this challenge is all about the chase!"

The floor beneath them rumbled, and three doors slid open on opposite ends of the chamber, revealing three separate tunnels. From each tunnel, a small, shadowy figure darted into view—a trio of rabbits, each wearing a black top hat adorned with a playing card. They glanced at the three men with glowing red eyes before scattering into their respective tunnels.

"Your objective is simple," Aurelio purred, his voice now laced with sadistic glee. "Each of you must follow a rabbit. Within its hat lies a key. But here's the twist—only one rabbit holds the true key that unlocks the door to the next round. The rest? Oh, their hats are just empty shells. You must be quick, you must be clever, and most importantly, you must be lucky."

Temoshí glanced at Tarot and Nathaniel, nodding toward the tunnels. "Looks like we're splitting up."

Aurelio chuckled. "Oh, and before I forget... these tunnels? Not your average playground. Each course has its own... unique flair." He let out a sinister laugh. "So, gentlemen, choose wisely—and let the games begin!"

The rabbits dashed deeper into their tunnels as the walls behind them began to close in, forcing the trio to make their move.

"Go!" shouted Temoshí. Without hesitation, they each darted into a different tunnel.

The Rabbit Run: Chaos Unleashed

As the trio sprinted into their respective tunnels, Aurelio's voice boomed over the speakers, dripping with amusement. "Oh, this is precious! Pirates chasing rabbits in my finely-tuned funhouse. But don't let their cute little noses and fluffy tails fool you—those rabbits are tricksters! You'll need more than brute strength to catch them. Now, go on! The show must hop—er, I mean, go on!"

The walls of the tunnels glowed faintly, pulsing like veins of light, as each pirate disappeared into their designated course.

Temoshí skidded to a halt as his tunnel revealed its horrors. Electrified tiles stretched across the floor in a deadly grid, each one sparking in warning. At the far end, his rabbit sat on its haunches, its top hat tilted at a jaunty angle.

"Alright, you little menace," Temoshí muttered, rolling up his sleeves. "Time to bring you in."

He took a cautious step forward, and instantly, a tile beneath his foot crackled with electricity. He leapt back with a curse.

"Oh, careful there, little fire bird!" Aurelio's voice mocked through the speakers. "Wouldn't want to fry yourself before catching the prize. Or... would you?"

Temoshí gritted his teeth. The rabbit watched him, twitching its nose as if in laughter, before hopping lazily onto another tile—one that didn't spark.

"So, that's the game," Temoshí muttered, testing another tile. It lit up beneath him, forcing him to dart to the side to avoid a sudden jolt.

The rabbit darted across the grid, and Temoshí was forced into a series of wild, chaotic movements: ducking low, hopping over tiles, and narrowly avoiding shocks. Twice, he almost had the rabbit within arm's reach, only for it to leap away with impossible precision.

"You've gotta be kidding me!" he roared, lunging again. This time, his fingers brushed the rabbit's tail, but he landed on a sparking tile. The jolt sent him flying backward.

"Careful, Captain!" Aurelio taunted. "You'll end up as fried calamari at this rate!"

Temoshí growled, shaking off the pain and scrambling to his feet.

Tarot dashed through his tunnel, only to stop short as the walls shifted before his eyes. The rabbit darted around a corner, and when Tarot followed, the path he'd just taken closed off behind him.

"A maze," Tarot groaned, spinning his staff. "Of course it's a maze. Why do I always get the puzzles?"

"Ah, poor monkey," Aurelio chimed in mockingly. "Not every challenge can be solved with brute force. Do try to use that clever little brain of yours... if you can keep up with your fluffy adversary!"

Tarot snorted and sprinted forward, following the sound of the rabbit's hopping feet. Every time he thought he had it cornered, the walls would shift, opening a new path for the creature to escape.

"I swear, you're cheating!" Tarot yelled as the rabbit disappeared behind yet another wall.

He tried everything—spinning his staff to jam the shifting mechanisms, climbing over walls that moved too slowly, even throwing himself headfirst into a closing gap. Each attempt only seemed to amuse Aurelio more.

"Come on, you can do it!" Aurelio's voice sang mockingly. "Or do you need a peach-flavored energy boost?"

"I'm this close to breaking your speakers!" Tarot growled, his patience wearing thin.

Finally, he spotted the rabbit perched on a low wall. He lunged, but the wall slid out from under him, leaving him flat on his face.

"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!"

Nathaniel entered his tunnel cautiously, his sharp eyes scanning the room. A narrow beam stretched across a pit of retracting spikes, and at the other end, the rabbit waited, its red eyes glinting mischievously.

Nathaniel sighed. "Great. Balancing act with a side of death."

"Not to worry, sharpshooter!" Aurelio's voice rang out. "Surely your steady hands and keen eyes will serve you well. But do mind the spikes—they tend to be... unforgiving."

Nathaniel stepped onto the beam, his arms outstretched for balance. The rabbit flicked its ears and hopped to the center of the beam, watching him approach.

"Alright, little guy," Nathaniel murmured. "Let's make this easy."

As he drew closer, the rabbit suddenly bolted, its tiny paws barely making a sound. The beam tilted sharply under its weight, sending Nathaniel teetering dangerously close to the edge.

"Damn it," he muttered, adjusting his balance.

The rabbit hopped onto a small platform that extended from the beam, taunting him. Nathaniel leapt forward, but the platform retracted, leaving him to land awkwardly on the beam. He swayed, his boots skidding on the narrow surface, and barely avoided falling into the spikes below.

"Careful now!" Aurelio's voice called cheerfully. "You wouldn't want to end up... skewered."

Nathaniel rolled his eyes. "You're enjoying this way too much."

After what felt like an eternity of close calls, all three pirates finally cornered their respective rabbits.

Temoshí managed to pin his rabbit after a dramatic dive that left him sprawled across the electrified tiles, smoke rising from his singed clothes. Tarot used his staff to create a makeshift cage, trapping his rabbit just as the walls shifted again. Nathaniel, true to his reputation, snatched his rabbit with precision, though not without a few new scratches.

Each of them grabbed the top hats, only to find two of them empty.

"Of course," Temoshí growled, glaring at his hat.

Nathaniel's hat, however, contained a glinting key.

The trio reconvened in a central chamber, battered and out of breath.

"Well done!" Aurelio's voice boomed, his laughter echoing in their ears. "You've proven you can chase fluffy animals through my deadly little courses. But don't get too comfortable. The real challenge awaits!"

Temoshí scowled. "When I find you, I'm shoving one of these rabbits down your throat."

"Promises, promises," Aurelio taunted. "Now, onto the next event!"

To be continued...
