Chapter 3: In the Shadow of the Sentinel
"Drop your weapons!" an unknown guard commanded Fane, spotting him in the thick bush where he was arranging the bodies of his fallen Ironclaw Pack members, who had been killed in the clash with Elara and Rylan. To Fane's surprise, he had not even received a scratch when he was pushed off the cliff earlier.
Fane, still busy tending to his men, glanced up. "On whose authority?" he asked, his tone sharp.
The guard replied, "The Counselor Guards. Me and my group of sentinels, in charge of guiding our village."
Reluctantly, Fane surrendered. The leader of the Wolf Sentinels, curious about what had happened, surveyed the scene. Seeing the bodies of the Iron Pack, he asked, "Tell me what happened here."
Fane looked up. "Is the Sentinel you guard the ruler of this village?"
"Yes," the Commander of the Wolf Sentinels replied.
"Then I'll tell my story to him," Fane said, leading them toward the village leader.
Once before the leader, Fane began explaining. "My name is Fane, the commander of the Ironclaw Pack. I've come all the way from Howlspire, in the Midland."
The leader looked surprised. "No one has crossed the boundary in hundreds of years."
Fane replied, "The woman I was pursuing found a way... She killed two of my men."
The leader, now intrigued, asked, "One woman?"
"Yes," Fane answered. "Her name is Elara. She's a sorceress... a rare soulbound alpha, a shifting wolf who can command loyalty with her touch. Her power ensures devotion, but at a cost—those she binds lose part of their free will. Despite this, she uses her gift with compassion, earning both fear and respect."
Fane continued, his voice growing darker, "Her magic is more powerful than anyone can imagine, and she had help from someone inside this boundary."
Fane then produced a necklace, glowing with blue magic, which had dropped from Rylan during the clash. He handed it to the village leader.
The leader stared at the necklace in shock. "This belongs to my brother."
Meanwhile, Rylan had been following Elara through the woods, watching her hold the glowing necklace. He was amazed by the power it seemed to give her, and he could sense it was leading her toward something. Before he could react, Elara vanished into the trees.
Confused and curious, Rylan returned home and explained everything to his father—the way Elara had commanded loyalty from one of Fane's guards and how she wielded the glowing necklace. "That's magic, right? But there's no magic inside this boundary."
His father, sensing the danger, immediately told Rylan to pack his things and leave through the back door.
"Rylan, you know I love you," his father said urgently. "Go, now. Find Zane at Blackthorn Hill."
Rylan protested, "But that crazy old man who talks to his chickens?"
"Tell him I sent you," his father replied, cutting him off. "He'll explain everything. Go!"
Rylan hesitated but then hugged his father. They exchanged a long, emotional look before Rylan left quickly through the back door.
Soon, the Wolf Sentinels arrived at the house. "Do you have any idea where Rylan went?" they asked the father.
"He said he was going to work on the new bridge this morning," his father replied. "I haven't seen him since then."
Fane, seeing one of Rylan's belongings on the table, suspected his father was lying. He persuaded the leader of the Sentinels to order the father to remain at home and not cause trouble while they searched for Rylan. The leader commanded two guards to stay behind and monitor the father.
A brief argument followed between the father and his son, Michael, the leader of the council. "Why are you so quick to believe someone from the Midlands?" the father asked.
"Because I know he can do something reckless," Michael replied.
"Because he's my son," the father shot back, his voice pleading. "Please, Michael, make sure he doesn't get killed."
Michael nodded. "Of course I will. But it's important to protect the people of this village."
The leader turned to the father, "Notify me if you see him again." Then, with a final glance, he set off to find his brother.
