Legacy of the Stars

Chapter 17: The Rising Storm

The air in the locker room was electric. The faint hum of the arena outside reverberated through the walls, a constant reminder of the battles being waged. Liu Cheng sat at the corner of the bench, his fingers interlocked as he stared at the holographic projection of their next opponents—Starborn Legacy, a team known for their relentless aggression and unorthodox strategies.

"Alright," Liu Cheng began, breaking the silence, "this team thrives on chaos. Their captain, Fang Wei, is infamous for forcing teams out of their comfort zones. If we let them dictate the pace, we're done for."

Zhang Wei leaned back against the wall, arms crossed, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. "So, what's the plan, genius? You always have one, don't you?"

Ignoring the jab, Liu Cheng stood and approached the projection. With a quick swipe, he expanded the map of the virtual arena—a sprawling, multi-level battlefield with dense fog zones and narrow corridors.

"We'll flip the script," Liu Cheng said, his voice steady. "Instead of reacting to their chaos, we'll create controlled chaos of our own. Lin Mei, you'll lead the scouting team through the fog zones. Jiang Yan, you'll handle defense on the lower levels. Zhang Wei..." He paused, meeting the older player's eyes. "You'll be our ace in the upper corridors. I'll handle mid-level support and strategy coordination."

Zhang Wei's smirk faded slightly as he nodded. "Fine. Just make sure your coordination doesn't mess with my timing."

Lin Mei's voice cut through the tension. "We've got this. But what about their sniper? Everyone knows Fang Wei uses her as a wildcard."

"Leave that to me," Liu Cheng replied, his confidence unwavering.

The Match

As the countdown to the match began, the crowd roared, their excitement palpable even through the soundproof headsets. Liu Cheng's fingers hovered over his controls, his mind racing through contingencies.

10... 9... 8...

"Stick to the plan," he reminded his team through the comms. "No matter what happens, trust each other."

The arena materialized around them. Fog rolled across the terrain, obscuring vision, while the sound of distant footsteps echoed eerily.

"Lin Mei, status?" Liu Cheng's voice was calm but firm.

"Scouting the fog zone now," she replied. "No movement yet."

Suddenly, Jiang Yan's voice crackled through. "Lower levels are secure, but I'm picking up noise from the west."

"Zhang Wei?" Liu Cheng asked.

"Engaging. Their vanguard's trying to flush me out." The sound of rapid gunfire followed his words.

Liu Cheng pulled up his tactical map, analyzing the enemy's movements. "They're trying to divide us. Lin Mei, redirect towards Jiang Yan's position. I'll back up Zhang Wei."

As Liu Cheng moved through the mid-level corridors, he spotted a flash of light—Starborn's sniper. Without hesitation, he deployed a smokescreen grenade, obscuring her line of sight.

"Sniper neutralized for now," he reported.

"Got them!" Lin Mei's voice rang out, triumphant. "Lower levels are clear."

Zhang Wei's laugh echoed over the comms. "Looks like they're not as tough as they think."

"Don't get cocky," Liu Cheng warned. "Their captain hasn't made a move yet."

The Twist

Just as the team regrouped, an alert flashed on Liu Cheng's screen. "System anomaly detected."

"Phantom?" he muttered under his breath.

"What's going on?" Lin Mei asked, concern evident in her voice.

"The system's acting up again," Liu Cheng replied. "But this time, it's affecting the whole arena."

The fog thickened unnaturally, reducing visibility to almost zero. Footsteps surrounded them, but the source was untraceable.

"Stay close," Liu Cheng ordered. "This isn't just Starborn. Someone's interfering."

Out of the mist, Fang Wei's team emerged, their movements eerily precise despite the chaos. The clash was brutal. Zhang Wei's quick reflexes saved Jiang Yan from a surprise attack, while Lin Mei's agility allowed her to outmaneuver Starborn's brawlers.

But it was clear—they were playing under new, manipulated conditions.

"Phantom's testing us," Liu Cheng realized. His mind raced as he pieced together a counter-strategy.

"Lin Mei, flank their sniper. Zhang Wei, keep their captain busy. Jiang Yan, reinforce the upper corridor. Trust me on this!"

The Resolution

The battle raged on, but Liu Cheng's quick thinking and adaptability turned the tide. Using a combination of decoys and coordinated strikes, Glory International dismantled Starborn's strategy.

As the final seconds ticked down, the system stabilized, and the fog dissipated. Victory banners lit up in Glory International's favor, and the crowd erupted in cheers.

Breathing heavily, Liu Cheng removed his headset. The victory felt hollow.

"Phantom's interference is getting worse," he muttered.

Lin Mei placed a hand on his shoulder. "We'll deal with it. Together."

Liu Cheng nodded, his resolve hardening. "This isn't over. Not by a long shot."
