In the middle of a luxuriously decorated room with dark mahogany trim and golden-framed paintings of historic people and landmarks, two plush velvet chairs stood with an end table between them.
A woman was sat in one of the chairs. Her long, platinum-blond hair was pulled back into an intricate braided high bun. With crowfeet at the corners of her eyes, the woman couldn't be described as anything but regal, with her high cheekbones and poised expression.
In the chair across from her was a man with silver white cut short and neat in a military style with a kempt bear on his chiseled jaw.
While the woman exuded an air of absolute control and calculation, the man had a silent confidence enhanced by his visible musculature.
Neither of them spoke engrossed in their own activities, but there was a comfortable bond only forged with decades of shared experiences and trust.
The air then stirred as a male House Elf apparated into the room, holding a bundle of peppers. But unlike most of his kind, this House Elf was dressed head to toe in finery, complete with a tuxedo and tie like a formal butler, "Pardon me, Lady and Sir, but I was looking through the mail, and I believe there are several articles of important note."
"Is that the Daily Prophet, Dobrick?" The woman asked, surprised as she looked away from the book she had been reading.
"Yes, it is. I usually would throw it away, but after seeing the front page, I judged that you would prefer to read it yourself." Dobrick responded as he walked over and presented the newspaper to his Lady.
The woman took the newspaper with a sniff, only to freeze as she saw the headline.
Noticing his wife's pause, the man looked up from the wooden block he had been carving with a small paring knife and said, "What is it, dear?"
Instead of responding, the woman began to flip through the newspaper frantically, her eyes moving back and forth across the page.
Leaning forward in his chair, the man patiently waited until his wife finished, "What is it, Evelina, darling?"
"It seems that Fae boy has made his first move," Evelina replied as she offered her husband the newspaper he eagerly began to read, "And he made some rather bold claims."
Slowly, his eyebrows began to creep up his forehead in surprise. When he reached the man, he burst into laughter, which made Evelina frown.
"This is no laughing matter, Cedric," Evalina stressed, "You know how deeply the ramifications of this little stunt will go."
"Yes, I'm sure it will be a right headache for the next few months, but you have to admire the boy's courage. Though I can't tell if his shop and claims at inventing a new branch of magic are to support his politics, or his politics is to support his magic?" Cedric replied while rubbing his chin in thought.
"If he's as cunning as I'm beginning to think he is, it's both," Evalina answered before turning to Dobrick, who had been patiently waiting with two more papers in hand.
"This is from the young misses, my Lady. And while I have not read it, I am almost certain that its contents are related to the article you just read," Dobrick informed as he handed over the first letter, which was sealed with the Greenhouse Insignian in wax, "Especially considering that this letter was sent along with it by the very same owl."
Evalina froze as Dobrick offered a second letter, which boasted a silver tree stamped into the wax surrounded by a wreath of vines.
"Oh, this is going to be good," Cedric said with a grin as he leaned back in his seat.
Taking her daughter's envelope first, Evalina broke the seal before unfolding the letter inside.
'Dear Mother, I'm writing you today to inform you of my impending engagement to Thane Fae, Lord, and Founder of The Most Ancient-'
"What?!" Evalina exclaimed out loud as she sat up in her chair, unable to contain her emotions.
Cedric raised an eyebrow, "Is it that bad?"
"I asked the girl to keep tabs on the boy, not get engaged to him," Evalina stressed, "What is she thinking?"
"She's getting engaged?" Cedric asked, his confusion evident, "To the Fae boy?"
"Yes, and it's only been a couple of months. How did this happen?" Evalina stressed as she continued to read her daughter's letter.
"Could she have been charmed on bewitched?" Cedric asked, surprisingly calm for a father discussing the potential endangerment of his daughter.
"Please, the first thing we taught her was always to test her food, and there's a reason why we paid that Legilimens so much to plant a trigger in her mind that would alert us if it was ever interfered with," Evalina scoffed as she continued to read, "She says she knows this is sudden and unexpected, but has genuinely fallen for Lord Fae and believes that it is prudent that we support his endeavors and not underestimate his ability."
"That does sound like our daughter," Cedric noted, "Does she say anything specific about this Fae Apothecary business or his proposed bill?"
"Nothing specific, only that everything Fae claimed in his interview is a gross understatement of the impact he will one day have on the global Wizarding Community," Evaline muttered.
Cedric grunted, "Maybe this isn't our daughter. I've never heard her faun over someone this much besides Astoria."
"Which is all the more concerning," Evaline agreed, "Let us see what the young Lord has to say about this engagement. Hopefully, Daphne told him what to say."
Evaline opened the second envelope and revealed a dark green letter filled with flowing script done in silver ink.
"So what does the boy say?" Cedric asked after a second.
"As expected, he's asking for Daphne's hand in marriage as his first wife and Lady Fae," Evaline repeated, speaking aloud as she read Thane's letter, "And as a dowery, he's offering us one percent of all Fae's Apothecary Inc. future profits."
"Well, he is confident you have to give him that," Cedric complimented with a grin, "I'm actually looking forward to meeting this lad."
"Well, that's good because he invited us to visit his store anytime during regular business hours for the next week," Evaline replied as she stood up from her seat. Shall we go see our potential son-in-law and his revolutionary business venture?"
"On the day he announces his opening? At least give the boy a chance," Cedric pleaded even as he stood from his chair.
"No, if this boy intends to marry our daughter. He will need to exceed every expectation," Evaline muttered as she strode over to the marble fireplace in the wall in front of them.
Reaching up on the mantle, Evaline grabbed a sliver bowl before reaching inside to grab a handful of fine sparking green powder.
With a wave of her hand, Evaline sent a burning ember flying into the fireplace, causing it to erupt with flames.
"Diagon Alley," Evaline intoned as she threw the floo powder into the fire turning the flames a bright green that she then walked through.
"When should I expect you and the Lady to return Sir?" Dobrick asked as Cedric sighed and walked towards the fire.
"Later rather than sooner most likely," Cedric replied as he followed his wife into the floo flames.
