Kyomu Kaibyaku: Black and White

Chapter 7: A Renewed Oath

Shizuhana, still visibly exhausted, walked slowly toward the main structure of the White Pole, where her devotees had been waiting for her.

Upon her arrival, the Five Devotees of the fifth Dawn stood ready, each emanating a unique aura that reflected their essence and bond with the goddess. As she crossed the entrance, they all bowed solemnly, but their faces betrayed concern.

"Shizuhana-sama," said Tathuvan, the First Devotee, stepping forward. "We have felt the tremors of your battle. What happened on the field?"

Shizuhana let her Ame-no-nuboko fall to her side and sighed, gathering her thoughts. "The White Pole is under threat... not just from external forces but from the cracks we ourselves have allowed to form." Her tone was serious, and her gaze moved across each of them, gauging their reactions.

Ruvyastra, the Second Devotee, frowned, crossing her arms. "Is this a warning for us, then? A reminder of our fragility? Or a call to action?" Her voice was sharp, direct, as always.

"Both," Shizuhana replied, her tone nearly severe. "But more than that, it's a truth we can no longer ignore. The Gods of the Dusk were watching. They did not manifest, but their presence was unmistakable, laden with intentions we do not yet fully understand."

Sorin Shinji, the Third Devotee, nodded slowly, his face calm but filled with worry. "If they were present and did not intervene, it means they are waiting for something... or someone. It's a game of patience and calculation. They rarely act without purpose."

Murayama, the Fourth Devotee, clenched his fist and struck his other palm in frustration. "Wait? While they wait, the Dawn weakens! We need to take action, prepare our defenses. If we don't, we'll be at their mercy."

"Calm yourself, Murayama," Balduryon, the Fifth Devotee, interjected, trying to diffuse the tension. "We gain nothing by succumbing to despair. The question isn't just what we should do, but how we should do it."

Shizuhana raised her hand, calling for silence. "You are all right, in your own ways. But this is not merely a conflict of strength or strategy. It is something deeper. During the critical clash between the forces of White and Black, something incomprehensible happened."

"What do you mean, Shizuhana-sama?" Tathuvan asked.

"I saw something," she said finally, breaking the intrigue that had fallen over the place. "It wasn't the dawn or the dusk, but something in between... it was like seeing an empty space where neither light nor shadow existed, neither white nor black. And I felt its presence. I couldn't discern what it was, nor do I have words to name or describe it, but without a doubt, that presence I felt did not belong to this universe or any other universe we can imagine. The energy it emanated was so... alien, unknown, and unrecognizable."

A profound silence followed Shizuhana's words. Each devotee looked at her in disbelief, struggling to process the meaning of what they had just heard. It was Ruvyastra who broke the silence, her tone a mix of skepticism and concern.

"An empty space? A state that is neither white nor black? Is that even possible?" Her voice trembled slightly, though she tried to maintain her composure.

Sorin Shinji closed his eyes, reflecting aloud. "If that presence does not belong to this universe or the others we know... could it be something that transcends the very system of antagonism? Something beyond Dawn and Dusk?"

Shizuhana nodded slowly, her face heavy with gravity. "I cannot claim anything with certainty. I only know that this presence... this thing, if it can even be called that, is anterior to all forms of light and darkness, as if it existed on the margins of what we define as reality."

Murayama, ever impulsive, stepped forward, his voice filled with frustration. "Then why didn't it confront us directly? If it's as powerful as it seems, why limit itself to just appearing? Tell us what we must do, Shizuhana-sama!"

She looked at him serenely, but her voice was firm. "Because it is not an enemy in the traditional sense. It does not seek to destroy us or impose itself. It is more like a witness... or a silent judge. I felt that its very existence is a reminder that everything we defend and build is as insignificant as it is grand."

The Fifth Devotee, Balduryon, who had remained silent, finally spoke, his deep and meditative tone carrying weight. "If this presence transcends the conflict of the poles (dual antagonism), we might be dealing with something that does not adhere to our laws or our wills. Could it be that we are being observed not as gods or mortals but as pieces of something greater?"

Shizuhana regarded him intently, nodding slightly. "That possibility has lingered in my mind since my return. But if that's the case, then our role is not only to protect the White Pole but also to understand our place in this... vast canvas of existence we ignore."

At that moment, a cold wind swept through the place. An oppressive sensation filled the air, and the devotees instinctively went on guard. Shizuhana frowned, gripping the Ame-no-nuboko once more.

"It's the Dusk," Sorin Shinji murmured. "They are not here physically, but their influence is trying to penetrate this place. They are listening."

Shizuhana gritted her teeth. "They know we discovered something in the battle. This only confirms that the presence unsettles them as much as it does us."

Tathuvan stepped forward proudly. "Shizuhana-sama, no matter what we face, be it the Twilight, this unknown presence, or any threat to the Dawn, we, your devotees, are here to protect you and defend what you stand for."

The other devotees nodded, one after another, showing their resolve.

Shizuhana looked at them with a mixture of pride and concern. "I am grateful for your loyalty, but the path we are about to tread will be more difficult than you imagine. It may require us to question everything we believe and stand for."

"So be it," Balduryon replied calmly. "If we are to face the incomprehensible, we will do so together."

Shizuhana nodded, proud of her devotees. "Then let our preparations begin. The Dawn can still prevail, but it will not be without sacrifices."
