Chapter 43: The Puppets Evolve
The warm glow of The Crusty Kunai flickered against the wooden walls as the night deepened. The restaurant had closed hours ago, yet inside the kitchen, the real training was just beginning. Flour dusted the countertops, the air was rich with the aroma of roasted garlic, and at the center of it all stood Raven Kamizuki, the Sage of Six Slices.
Her violet Rinnegan shimmered under the lantern lights as she stretched her fingers toward the wooden puppet in front of her. Unlike a normal puppet, this one had sealing formulas carved into its limbs, interwoven with chakra pathways designed to enhance its mobility. Its arms, normally stiff and lifeless, twitched under the influence of Raven's chakra.
This was no ordinary training session.
Tonight, she was taking her puppetry to the next level.
Yuumi, perched lazily on a flour sack, flicked her silver tails. "You do realize that if you actually succeed in making chakra circulate through that thing, you'll officially be weirder than any other puppet user in history, right?"
Raven didn't look away from her project. "Weird? No. Innovative? Yes."
Yuumi rolled her eyes. "You're turning a pizza-serving puppet into a chakra-infused combat construct."
Raven smirked. "If I'm going to become the greatest, I have to start somewhere."
A low chuckle came from the corner. Hajime Kamizuki, her ever-sage-like father, sipped his coffee dramatically before speaking. "Ah, my child… this is the first step toward true enlightenment. A shinobi must not only master combat, but also the art of efficiency. And what is pizza-making, if not the perfect balance of the two?"
Aiko stormed in from the back, waving a rolling pin. "Hajime, if you start monologuing again while our daughter is animating a pizza-serving puppet for battle, I swear—"
Hajime lifted a hand. "Peace, my dear. This is an important moment."
"The only important moment here is whether or not I'm going to throw you into the oven," Aiko snapped. "And right now, the odds are not in your favor."
Raven ignored the exchange. Her chakra pulsed, veins of blue light running through the puppet's frame. The intricate seals she had carved earlier started to glow, and with a final push of her Rinnegan's power, the puppet suddenly moved on its own—not just as an extension of her will, but as if it were alive.
Yuumi's eyes widened slightly. "Huh. You actually did it."
Raven grinned, wiping flour off her hands. "Of course I did. This is only step one."
Aiko pinched the bridge of her nose. "Raven, I swear, if this thing starts throwing pizzas at people—"
The puppet twitched again, then moved faster—smooth, controlled, like a shinobi mid-battle stance. Its wooden fingers flexed, and then—
A high-pitched whirring sound filled the air.
A sharp metallic blade extended from its wrist, gleaming under the kitchen lights.
Everyone froze.
Yuumi blinked. "Wait. Is that—"
Raven clasped her hands behind her back, smirking. "Dual pizza cutters. Optimized for maximum precision."
Aiko screamed. "RAVEN, WHY DOES IT HAVE BLADES?!"
Hajime, unfazed, simply nodded sagely. "A true warrior's weapon—efficient, deadly, and capable of slicing even the toughest crust."
Aiko grabbed a frying pan and threw it at him.
The puppet twirled, spinning the razor-sharp pizza cutters, before halting in place, completely stable.
Yuumi watched in stunned silence before slowly exhaling. "You've created a monster."
Raven clapped her hands together. "A perfectly balanced one."
Before Aiko could fully explode at the monstrosity her daughter had just created, the front door of the shop suddenly creaked open.
The room fell silent.
A shadowed figure stepped inside, their movements too controlled, too disciplined to be a civilian.
Yuumi's fur bristled. "That's not a customer."
Raven's smirk faded. She turned to the stranger, her Rinnegan already active.
The intruder took a slow step forward, tilting their head slightly as if studying her. "So… the rumors were true."
Hajime, unbothered as ever, stroked his beard. "Ah, a mysterious challenger approaches. How dramatic."
Aiko grabbed her rolling pin like a club. "If you're here for pizza, order properly or get out."
The masked figure didn't react. Their presence, however, felt sharp—focused, like someone who had spent years honing their skills in secrecy.
Raven narrowed her eyes. "Who sent you?"
The intruder's lips curled into a smirk beneath their mask. "Danzo Shimura sends his regards."
Yuumi cursed. "Root."
Raven felt a flicker of amusement. "Oh? He sent one of his little spies after me? How flattering."
The Root operative didn't waste any more words. In an instant, they launched forward, a kunai gleaming in their grip.
Raven barely moved.
With a single gesture, her puppet lunged.
The Root agent barely managed to deflect the whirling pizza cutter blades, leaping backward as the puppet relentlessly pursued them.
Yuumi whistled. "I take it back. This thing's terrifying."
The fight continued, the Root agent flickering between movements with practiced ease, but Raven was unimpressed.
She raised her hand and activated the Outer Path.
A surge of chakra linked her puppet to her directly, amplifying its speed and reaction time. Suddenly, the puppet was matching the Root agent's movements effortlessly, cutting off every escape route.
The spy's breathing turned sharp. "What—?"
Raven took a step forward. "You underestimated me."
Her puppet struck—a precise, chakra-enhanced blow to the agent's chest. The Root operative flew back, slamming into a stack of flour sacks.
White powder burst into the air, obscuring everything.
When it cleared, the spy was on the ground, unconscious.
Yuumi blinked. "Huh. That was fast."
Hajime nodded sagely. "A battle, like a well-crafted pizza, must be finished at the exact right moment. Too early, and the flavors are incomplete. Too late, and it is burnt beyond repair."
Aiko sighed. "Hajime, if you don't shut up, I swear—"
Raven walked forward, nudging the unconscious agent with her foot. "Danzo really needs to send better opponents."
Yuumi sat beside the fallen operative. "What do we do with them?"
Raven thought for a moment before grinning. "We deliver them… in a pizza box."
Silence.
Aiko threw a rolling pin at her.
