Chapter 76: Land of Thick Fog
The originally empty grassland turned into a dark swamp, emitting a pungent stench.
Shen Lang's face was solemn: "It seems that we are in a more dangerous situation."
Xue Lingling bit her lip: "What should we do then?"
Shen Lang drew out his sword from his waist and held it tightly in his hand: "First, carefully try to move forward and see if you can find a way out."
Xue Lingling nodded and followed Shen Lang closely.
They were extremely cautious with every step they took. Shen Lang gently tested the ground in front of him with his sword, fearing that he would step into the air.
The swamp under his feet was muddy and emitting a disgusting smell.
Xue Lingling endured the discomfort and tried to stay calm.
"Shen Lang, I always feel that there are eyes staring at us in the dark." Xue Lingling said in a trembling voice.
Shen Lang looked stern, and his eyes looked around vigilantly: "Don't panic, maybe the thing in the dark wants to wait for us to lose our composure before attacking."
Xue Lingling tried to calm her breathing and nodded: "Well, I'll listen to you."
They continued to move forward cautiously, and every step was like walking on thin ice.
At this time, the muddy water in the swamp seemed to become more viscous, and the resistance was greater.
Suddenly, a strange mist spread and instantly enveloped them.
Shen Lang's heart tightened, and he shouted: "Lingling, hold my hand tightly, don't get separated!"
Xue Lingling held Shen Lang's hand tightly, and her voice was a little scared: "Shen Lang, this fog is too thick, I can't see anything."
Shen Lang comforted: "Don't be afraid, Lingling, I'm here, and I won't let anything happen to you."
As he spoke, he held Xue Lingling's hand back more forcefully, trying to give her some sense of security.
Xue Lingling's heartbeat accelerated rapidly, and her breathing became rapid: "Shen Lang, can we get out?"
Shen Lang answered firmly: "Of course we can! As long as we stay calm and follow the wind, we may be able to get rid of this fog."
They groped forward in the fog with difficulty, and from time to time there was a "puff puff" sound under their feet. They didn't know whether they fell into a deeper quagmire or stepped on something strange.
Xue Lingling's body couldn't help trembling: "Shen Lang, I feel that there are many eyes around us staring at us."
Shen Lang frowned, his eyes were like torches: "Don't worry about that, focus on the road under your feet."
Just then, a cool breeze blew.
The fog seemed to deliberately go against them, becoming thicker and thicker, and it was almost pitch black.
Shen Lang's heartbeat became more and more rapid, and the sweat on his forehead slid down his cheeks and dripped into the quagmire under his feet.
"Lingling, hold me tight, don't let go."
Shen Lang's voice seemed a little trembling in the fog.
Xue Lingling cried, "Shen Lang, I won't let go, but when will this fog dissipate?"
Shen Lang gritted his teeth, "Believe me, there will be a way out soon."
Suddenly, a strange sound came from the front, as if something was moving quickly.
Shen Lang stopped, protected Xue Lingling behind him, and clenched his sword.
The sound was getting closer and closer, and Shen Lang's nerves were tense to the extreme.
Just when they were on full alert, a huge bird rushed out of the fog, flapping its wings and bringing a gust of wind.
Shen Lang subconsciously waved his sword to resist, but found that the bird had no intention of attacking, but flew straight in the direction of the wind.
Shen Lang's heart moved: "Lingling, maybe this bird can lead us."
They followed the bird closely, and the fog seemed to be gradually thinning.
A glimmer of hope ignited in the hearts of Shen Lang and Xue Lingling, and their pace unconsciously accelerated.
However, just when they thought they were about to walk out of the fog, the bird suddenly disappeared.
Xue Lingling shouted anxiously: "Shen Lang, the bird is gone, what should we do?"
Shen Lang looked around and found that although the fog was not as thick as before, it still affected his vision.
"Don't panic, Lingling, we continue to walk in this direction, it should not be wrong."
They continued to move forward, and the road under their feet became more and more rugged.
Xue Lingling was not careful and almost fell, Shen Lang hurriedly supported her.
"Be careful." Shen Lang said.
Just as Xue Lingling stood firm, the two suddenly heard a cry for help.
"Help!" The voice was filled with fear and helplessness. Shen Lang and Xue Lingling looked at each other and exclaimed at the same time: "It's Xue Mengya's voice!"
"Mengya! Is that you? Where are you!"
Xue Lingling shouted hoarsely, and the sound kept echoing in this empty place. However, except for the echo of her own voice, there was no response from Xue Mengya.
Shen Lang's face became more and more solemn, his brows were tightly twisted together, and the blue veins on his forehead were slightly throbbing.
"Where is it?"
Xue Lingling looked around anxiously, her eyes were bloodshot, her eye sockets were red, and tears were rolling in her eye sockets.
Her hands kept shaking, her steps were messy, like a lamb that had lost its direction.
Shen Lang tried to calm himself down, he closed his eyes and listened carefully to all the sounds around him.
The whistling of the wind through the woods, the rustling of leaves rubbing against each other, and the faint cry for help.
Suddenly, he opened his eyes abruptly, pointed to a valley in front and said: "The sound seems to come from there!"
Xue Lingling hurriedly looked at the valley, with a spark of hope in her eyes: "Then let's go over there quickly!"
Entering the valley, the light around became dimmer and the gloomy atmosphere became stronger.
A thin layer of fog filled the valley, making their vision blurry.
Shen Lang watched the surroundings vigilantly while shouting loudly: "Xue Mengya, can you hear us?"
Only their shouts echoed in the valley, and there was still no response from Xue Mengya.
Xue Lingling couldn't help but burst into tears: "Sister, where are you?"
The closer they got to the valley, the more gloomy and terrifying the environment became. The huge trees were like ancient giants, with branches intertwined, covering the sky and the sun, almost completely blocking the sunlight.
Only a few weak and thin rays of light came through the gaps between the leaves with difficulty, forming slender beams of light that shone on the moss-covered ground.
Compared to where they were just now, it was simply two different places.
The atmosphere here was extremely depressing, and the fog around seemed to have substance, weighing heavily on people's hearts.
The rocks were jagged and grotesque, like a hideous ghost face.
The ground became increasingly damp and muddy, emitting waves of rancid smells that made people want to vomit.
Shen Lang couldn't help but wonder if the cry for help just now was really made by Xue Mengya.
His brows were furrowed, and his eyes were full of entanglement and vigilance.
