Chapter 79: Chaos Part 1

************************

Hungary, Budapest

The rooftop restaurant, perched high above the Danube River, shimmered with the soft glow of the city lights.

There was a couple eating in the restaurant and the young man named Flynn, his heart pounding in his chest, watched Juliet savor her meal, his own food untouched. He was about to propose. He had planned this night for weeks, dreaming of the moment he would ask her to spend forever with him. But a wave of anxiety washed over him, a fear of rejection, a phantom of doubt.

He clenched his spoon and fork, his hands trembling, his eyes darting around the restaurant, avoiding Juliet's gaze.

Juliet, with a smile on her lips, felt the table shake slightly. She looked up at Flynn, her brow furrowed with concern.

"Are you okay?" she asked, reaching out to gently hold his hand.

"You haven't even touched your food. You don't like it? Should we find another restaurant?" She'd chosen this restaurant, a place overlooking the city, believing it was perfect for their special night.

Flynn didn't respond. His eyes met hers, fixated on her hands, her warm touch calming his jittery nerves. 'Juliet wouldn't do that,' he thought, his resolve strengthening. He was overthinking, his fear misplaced.

He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, trying to regain his composure.

Juliet, her eyes filled with worry, squeezed his hand.

"Don't do that," she said, her voice soft but firm. "You know how much I hate when you keep things from me. Talk to me." She didn't want this anniversary, their celebration of their love, to turn into a disaster.

Flynn opened his eyes, meeting hers, a bittersweet smile playing on his lips. He felt foolish, his heart sinking at the thought of Juliet rejecting him. He gently cupped her hand in his, holding it tightly.

"What is it? You're scaring me," she said, her voice trembling, tears welling in her eyes. She imagined the worst, that he wanted to break up. She reached for her chest, seeking comfort.

Flynn saw her expression, the fear in her eyes, and a wave of guilt washed over him. He released her hand and stood, his gaze meeting hers.

He walked towards her, reaching out to gently caress her cheek, his thumb brushing against her skin. Then, he knelt, his eyes locked with hers.

Her eyes widened, her hand flying to her mouth in shock. Their eyes met, a silent exchange of emotion. It wasn't just Juliet who was captivated by the scene.

The entire restaurant had fallen silent, their eyes fixed on the couple, their appetites forgotten. The atmosphere crackled with anticipation.

"I don't know how much I thought about this," Flynn said, his voice filled with both love and nervous anticipation.

"How much I imagined this moment. Trying to find the courage to do this." He smiled, a soft, genuine smile that lit up his face. He reached into his suit pocket, producing a velvet box.

"But now I know, even if there's a possibility you reject me, I will still love you."

Juliet's eyes widened as she gazed at the box, her heart pounding with excitement. The diamond ring within, sparkling under the restaurant's soft lighting, dazzled her.

"So, Juliet Nichols," he continued, his voice filled with emotion, "for everything we've been through, for all the joy and heartache, for the love we share, will you marry me?"

He was about to complete his proposal, a smile still gracing his lips, when his eyes widened in horror.

He looked up, towards the sky, something flying towards them. A grotesque shape, getting bigger, closer, faster.

Juliet, disappointed that he'd paused, saw his wide eyes and turned her gaze in the direction of his stare. She screamed, a sound that pierced the stillness, a gasp of pure terror. "AAAH!"

The restaurant, no longer consumed by anticipation, burst into a cacophony of panicked shouts. The people who had been watching, now looked up, their eyes wide with horror.

"OH MY GOD!" "AAHHH!" "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!"

The grotesque monster, a horrifying creature that seemed to defy all laws of nature, swooped down towards them. A wave of panic swept through the restaurant. People scrambled to their feet, their voices a chorus of fear and confusion. Some rushed toward the elevator, while others froze, transfixed by the sight of the monstrous creature descending from the sky.

Flynn, his heart pounding in his chest, acted instinctively. He pulled Juliet's arm, his voice sharp with urgency.

"GET DOWN!" he shouted, his eyes wide with terror. He pulled her down, both of them crouching beneath the table, seeking the meager protection it offered.

The Murciélago, a monstrous bat with razor-sharp claws and a gaping maw, landed on the rooftop, its dark, leathery wings flapping, a shadow falling over the stunned diners.

"AHHHHH!" A woman screamed, her voice high-pitched and filled with terror. She turned and fled towards the elevator, her footsteps pounding against the floor. Others followed suit, a panicked exodus from the rooftop restaurant. Some, bold or foolish, reached for their phones, wanting to capture the spectacle, but their bravado quickly faded.

"Oh my god, have you seen this shit!" one young man said, pointing his phone towards the Murciélago. He turned to look at the creature, his eyes widening with fear.

The Murciélago had stopped observing them and was now fixated on him, its eyes glinting with a predatory hunger, its jaw working, a low growl rumbling in its throat.

"Shi—" He didn't finish his sentence, too horrified to utter another word. The Murciélago, lunged with a speed that defied its bulky form, as it pounced on him.

The young man gasped, his eyes widening in terror as the creature's sharp teeth sank into his flesh. The Murciélago drank deeply, its fangs ripping into his neck, the sound of tearing flesh echoing through the restaurant.

The young man crumpled to the ground, lifeless, a crimson stain spreading across the floor.

The remaining diners, frozen in fear, watched in silence, a wave of disbelief washing over them. Then, a voice broke the silence, a raw cry of terror.

"WHAT THE FUCK!!!"

The Murciélago, its thirst for blood unquenched, turned its gaze on the remaining diners.

It rushed towards the diners, it movements blurring, a swift symphony of death.

The humans had no chance. One after another, they fell, their bodies slashed open, a crimson stain blooming across their chests and stomachs.

One man, his eyes wild with fear, grabbed a knife, desperately searching for a way to defend himself. He spun around, his heart pounding in his chest, his eyes scanning the room. He felt a presence beside him, a cold, shadowy presence. He slowly turned, his breath catching in his throat. A monstrous creature, its bat-like wings folded, its eyes glowing with a predatory hunger, stood before him. A claw, long and sharp, slashed out, tearing through his face.

The man let go of the knife, his face disfigured, blood pouring from the wound. He crumpled to the floor, his lifeblood staining the pristine tiles.

The other diners huddled near the elevator, their eyes wide with fear, they watched the scene in horror while they frantically pushed the button, their fingers trembling. Some, knowing that the elevator wouldn't arrive in time, grasped those closest to them, pulling them into hiding, seeking a slim chance of survival.

A woman, her face pale, was left alone in front of the elevator. She clutched her phone, her fingers wrapped around the cold metal. She was calling the police, her voice barely a whisper.

"Please, please answer," she pleaded, her eyes darting nervously between the elevator and the creature that stalked the rooftop.

The elevator, a beacon of hope, finally arrived. The doors slid open, revealing the inside of the elevator, just as she was about to step inside, her call was answered.

[Hello, this is the emergency call center, how can we help you?] The operator's voice was calm and reassuring, unaware of the terror unfolding in the building.

"Thank God, there's a monster here!" she gasped, her voice filled with desperation.

She stepped into the elevator, ducking her head, and pressing the button for the ground floor.

[What ma'am? Can you please repeat what you said?] The operator, hearing the woman's frantic voice, his voice was filled with skepticism. He couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"Oh my god, like I said, there's a monster, he—" she started, but her words were cut short. She lifted her head, and her heart stopped. The Murciélago, its eyes burning with a hunger that chilled her blood, stood before her. Blood dripped from its jaws, the metallic scent filling the air.

She froze, frozen in place, her phone slipping from her hand. The Murciélago, its hunger insatiable, lunged, its claws slashing out, tearing through her stomach. It flung her back, her body crashing against the elevator wall.

"Aahhh!" she screamed, her voice a tortured cry.

The creature sank its teeth into her neck, drinking deeply. Its claws ripped at her flesh, a sickening sound that echoed through the elevator. Then, it turned its attention towards her stomach, its jaws working, tearing through her flesh.

[Ma'am are you still there?] The operator's voice, filled with concern, echoed from the phone. He could hear the woman's scream, the sound of her final struggle.

Outside the elevator, a man was looking at them, his eyes wide with terror, and couldn't tear his gaze away from the elevator doors. He watched in morbid fascination, his stomach churning, as the Murciélago continued its gruesome feast.

The other diners, their faces pale, covered their mouths, their eyes darting between the creature and the exit, their minds overwhelmed by the horror unfolding before them.

He clenched his fist, the knuckles turning white. He glanced at the river, a ribbon of darkness winding through the city, a tempting escape. His heart pounded in his chest, his fear battling with a desperate desire to survive.

"Fuck this," he muttered, his voice hoarse with terror. "I'd rather drown than be here." He stood, his legs trembling, and ran towards the edge of the rooftop.

The Murciélago, its hunger insatiable, raised its head from its bloody meal. It paused, its gaze lingering on the woman's body, its jaw working as it chewed on the last bits of flesh. Then, its head snapped up, its red eyes glowing, as if sensing the man's desperate escape.

With a flick of its claws, it darted out of the elevator, its claws glinting in the light. It was swift and silent, a deadly shadow speeding across the rooftop.

Just as the man reached the edge of the rooftop, another Murciélago plummeted from the sky, its wings beating erratically. Unlike its brethren, it didn't land gracefully.

It tumbled, crashing into a table, its form sprawling across the floor. It turned its head, its gaze meeting the man's.

The creature growled, a low, menacing rumble. It slashed out, its claws tearing into the man's throat.

The man's eyes widened in horror as blood gushed from the wound. He gasped, "Ahhck," clutching at his throat, but the Murciélago wasn't finished. It sank its teeth into his flesh, a brutal feast that continued as the man struggled to breathe, his body convulsing.

Flynn, watching the carnage unfold, knew their cover was blown. He pulled Juliet to her feet.

"Run!" he yelled, his voice barely a whisper. He turned, his eyes scanning the rooftop, searching for a way out.

Then, he froze. Another Murciélago, the one from the elevator, stood in front of them, its eyes burning with a hunger that chilled his blood.

The creature didn't attack them immediately. Instead, it opened its jaw wide and unleashed an ear-splitting shriek.

"KeEa-eeEeaeAaa!"

The shriek, a sound of pure, unadulterated evil, shattered the wine glasses and bottles, a shower of glass and alcohol raining down. The force of the shriek rippled through the building, shattering windows on the upper floors, a symphony of destruction.

Flynn felt a searing pain, before his eyes exploded in his head, his ears ringing. He staggered, a wave of nausea washing over him. Blood dripped from his ears and nose. Juliet, her eyes wide with terror, experienced the same searing pain. The other diners on the rooftop, those who had survived, felt the full force of the creature's shriek, their bodies convulsing as their ears bled.

The Murciélago closed its jaw with a snap, its eyes fixed on Flynn, who had fallen to the ground. It crept towards him, its claws clicking against the floor, its hunger growing. Just as it was about to sink its fangs into his neck, a guttural roar shook the air.

"GrrrrmRrrroOoooaAar!"

The roar echoed from the sky, a powerful sound that seemed to shake the very foundations of the building.

The Murciélagos on the rooftop, their feeding frenzy interrupted, froze. Their eyes, once focused on their prey, shifted towards the sky.

They shook their heads, growling, their bodies tense, as they felt a primal instinct, a call to obey.

One of the Murciélagos, its claws clamped around Flynn's body, raised its wings. It began to flap, its form rising into the air, its flight towards the source of the roar.

The other Murciélago, finished devouring the man, lifted its claws, its grip on Juliet's body tight. It flapped its wings, joining the other Murciélago, its gaze locked in the sky, following the same instinct, the same call.

The rooftop stood silent, the air thick with the smell of blood and fear. The city lights, the vibrant tapestry of life below, seemed to fade, as if the very air had been sucked dry.

It was a scene of utter devastation, evidence of a chaotic disaster that was about to come.
