Chapter 4: But I promise you this, I'll always look out for you
I lay in bed as I stare up at the ceiling.
Today was a disaster
When I told the people of the kingdom that I'll be sitting the throne for the time being, they were absolutely outraged. They kept on yelling very disturbing things, calling me mean names and someone actually threw a tomato at me. I was very close to having a panic attack in front of everyone but my sister, Keshia pulled me away before that could happen.
It's very funny how people treat you when you don't have a husband. When Romero was alive, nobody dared stare at me too long because they were too afraid he might cut their eyes out.
I'm at least glad Keshia was there for me.
She's younger than me but the two of us have always been close, being the only kids of our parents. The only difference between us is that I had to get married to a man forced upon me while she gets to do whatever she wants. I don't hate her for it, I hate our parents.
I startle when my bedchamber door is wrenched open and the knight guard hurries in with Raya who looks like she's seen a ghost. I'm immediately on my feet "What happened?"
"She claims someone was in her bedchamber and held a pillow over her head"
I gasp and take her into my arms before carrying her to the bed and yelling at the guard "Get Romero Junior!"
He's out of the door and I glance at Raya who's shaking "Hey, hey. Look at me" she looks at me with wide eyes "You're safe" when she shakes her head, I say "You're safe with me. I won't let anything happen to you, but you need to tell me what happened, sweetheart"
She swallows and I gave her the glass of water from my nightstand and watch her sip it before she says "I was sleeping and couldn't breathe, I felt a pillow over my face" her bottom lip quivers and I take her little hands into mine "I screamed as loud as I could and when I felt again, the pillow was still on my face but nobody was holding it" she grips my hand tightly "You have to believe me, mother. I swear I felt someone holding it over my face"
"It's okay, I believe you. I do" She may be ten years of age but I highly doubt she would make up something like this. I hold her close to me and press a kiss to her hair as she cries in my chest and I glance at the door when the night guard enters with Junior in his arms and gives me a nod. I relax a bit and let out a sigh of relief before taking a sleeping Junior from his arms and ask "Can you get me Sir Hayden please?"
"Of course, your grace"
