Ten minutes ago, Risotto and his entire team had crossed the border and entered East Goruto territory. They took their time as they slowly made their way through the forest they had entered when they had barely crossed the border. Each of them had a small rucksack on their backs, containing mostly food and small items.
- Damn it!' said Formaggio, 'I think I saw a snake under a rock. Bloody wildlife. Maybe we should have taken the normal road. It's not like there's some guards.
- We can't,'' Risotto told him, ``We could have got past the guards. It wouldn't be difficult to deal with them, but what would it entail... They would have learnt that a group of dangerous enemies had invaded their country and would have sent some troops to us. Maybe we could have dealt with them, but it would have taken even longer than we're spending now, and there might have been casualties. So we can't risk it.
- I see,' Formaggio said with a heavy sigh, 'But damn this wilderness. Lots of creepers, predators, mosquitoes, if you want to eat wild berries, you risk getting poisoned. It's an arsehole, not nature.
- You're just an urban sissy,' Illuso said mockingly, 'Your best chance of surviving in nature is a city park.
- You talk like you're some kind of gamekeeper, but you're really a sissy like me.
- Stop it, guys,' Kurapika stopped their conflict and then turned to Risotto, 'Where are we going anyway? We're not going to walk all the way to Peijin, are we?
- Certainly not,' Risotto replied, 'According to the map and other information we've received, when we pass the forest, there should be a settlement beyond it. We can get a vehicle there.
- Thank goodness.
They continued on their way at a leisurely pace. Unfortunately, no sooner had they left the forest than it began to get dark. It was not a big obstacle, but it was not very comfortable to move in the dark, and there was a reason to rest and eat something.
They stopped in a small clearing and began gathering wood for a fire.
When everything was ready, using his Stand Kurapika lit the fire. Everyone sat around the fire and began to warm themselves, for the evenings were quite cool in the forests. Formaggio, Illuso, Melone and Giaccio took a can of tinned stew out of their rucksacks and started to heat it on the fire.
- Aren't you guys hungry? - Illuso turned to all those who had decided to refrain from eating.
- No, I've thought of something better, - said Pesci, - There's a river nearby. I'll go catch some fish.
- That's a good idea, - said Prosciutto, - I'd rather eat fish than this tinned food.
- Cool, let's eat fish. - Formaggio liked the idea too.
Taking only a torch with him, Pesci headed towards the river.
The others continued to sit where they were, minding their own business. Some of them just looked thoughtfully at the fire, some of them looked through the branches of the trees at the sky, where enough stars had already appeared, and some of them watched the nature around them and noticed things unknown to them. Risotto looked at the fire in silence and listened to the crackling of the burning logs. The silence was interrupted by Kurapika.
- He said with a slight smile, sitting on the left side of Risotto, 'You don't have to buy and carry a fishing rod. You just call on it when you need it and that's it. It's very convenient.
- It's both convenient and deadly,' said Prosciutto, who was sitting on the right side of Risotto, 'You've seen his Stand in action.
- Well, yes... And you can't tell at first sight. I didn't expect anything like that when I first saw him.
- Once he couldn't even imagine such a thing, - Prosciutto raised his head and stared at the sky, where there were already enough stars, - Once he himself considered not only his Stand, but also himself as useless rubbish. He said that he was useless, but I was right and better in everything. What an idiot. I tried to convince him otherwise. I encouraged him, pointed out his mistakes, made him do better. Sometimes I was even a little harsh in my parenting methods, but it was all for his own good. And the people around him... The people around him laughed at him. When we fought any enemies, they didn't take him seriously. They thought that I was the main threat, that I was the one to be eliminated first, and Pesci was just an errand boy. And sometimes they paid for such decisions. But even then, Pesci didn't show what he was capable of. Yes, he improved over time, but he really showed himself after... One accident. That's when he really showed who was to be feared. Not me, but him.
Everyone was a little surprised at such a small outpouring of heart from Prosciutto, even Risotto, which made him raise an eyebrow.
'Wow. I see Prosciutto has decided to speak his mind a bit. Not bad. They say it's even good for you.'
- Wow... - Kurapika was also surprised by such a thing, 'That's quite... Amazing. That's what he was like. In that case, you're good for Prosciutto for helping him grow. His abilities are truly remarkable.
- I'll say. But you know what? It's still not over. I believe that Pesci still hasn't shown his full potential. Believe me, he can do more. There's just no need for him to show more and better yet. But trust me, the time will come and he will. - Prosciutto was silent for a few seconds, and then he spoke again, 'Excuse me. Something came over me a little. I didn't think I'd say that.
- No, it's all right. You've been very entertaining to listen to.
- I've got an idea,' Melone said, 'If Prosciutto just spilled his guts here, why don't the rest of us do the same? Let's share something. Let's each talk about what we'd like to do after this is over.
- Do you think it will ever be over? - Formaggio asked him sceptically.
- Of course it will. Everything comes to an end, and our incredible adventure will come to an end sooner or later. So, who's going to do what when they get home?
Formaggio scratched his head a little and then answered:
- Well, I guess... I'm thinking of learning to be a vet and opening my own clinic someday.
- Pah, that's a hell of a statement, Illuso choked up, 'A vet? You want to help animals? You're not altruistic, are you?
- Yeah, what's the big deal? You better tell me what you want.
- I have more simple desires. I want a cool car, a cool place to live, and I want to have a lot of money to buy anything I want.
- How cliché.
- 'He's lying,' said Kurapika, 'You can tell. He wants something else, he just doesn't want to talk about it,' said Kurapika, judging by Illuso's face, 'You have a good wish, Formaggio. It's worthy of respect. You're an animal lover, aren't you?
- It may not sound like me, but yes, I do like animals. Especially cats. Now you tell me what you want.
- I? I don't know... - Kurapika was silent for a few seconds, - I haven't even thought about it. Well, I guess...' He thought again, and then answered confidently, 'You know, I suddenly realised that I'm happy with what I have. I'm happy with what I already have. Being in your team, I realised that all I need is you. Good friends, that's what I've always lacked. I have you, and that's all I need.
Everyone looked at him in silence for a couple of seconds, then Melone clapped his hands a little and spoke:
- Bravo! This is what I understand desire. If you have friends, you don't need anything else. They will always help you, give you a shoulder to lean on, give you advice, and much more.
- And now you're Melone.
- I'm what?
- Now you tell me what you want.
- Well I... When we get back I want to open my own sex shop, - For a few seconds everyone looked at him silently and worriedly, - Come on, I'm just kidding! I haven't thought of what I want to do yet. Although the idea of a sex shop is not a bad one. - He said the last sentence quietly and to himself, though he could hear it anyway.
- Your turn. - Kurapika turned to Risotto.
- Huh, me? - Risotto twitched a little at Kurapika's words, -Let me think about it, -After thinking for a few seconds he replied, -Yeah, you know, there's something I want. It's going to be massive and incredible. It will take a lot of time, effort and money, but I think it will be worth it. It's gonna be good for all of us.
- What, what is it? - Kurapika was greatly interested in his words, and everyone else shared his interest.
- It's a secret. I can't tell you now. When it's over, then I'll tell you, and we'll get right on it.
- If you say so. Now it's Gyaccio's turn to tell what he wants.
Everyone stared at Gyaccio, but he just didn't say anything.
- Why are you silent? - Melone asked him, -Come on, you must want something.
- I don't want anything, - Giaccio finally answered, - I'm satisfied with everything.
- I can see you're lying. Come on, spit it out. Everybody wants something.
- I don't want anything! I'm fuckin' fine!
- Giaccio,' Risotto said angrily, then he softened and said with a smile on his face, 'Tell me what you want. That's an order.
After gritting his teeth a little from anger, taking a deep breath and calming down, Giaccio decided to say what he wanted.
- I've been thinking about it for a long time, and anyway... When this is over, I want to learn to play the guitar.
- ... Wow, - Melone was a little surprised by this desire, and judging by the faces of everyone else too, - It's quite unusual to hear you say that.
- Are you happy now, asshole?! What, you're gonna make fun of me now?! You piece of shit! Fuck you!
Whether from the current situation or something else, but unable to contain himself any longer, Risotto first giggled and then laughed.
- Hahahahahahahaha! - Laughing, he grabbed his stomach and almost fell to the ground.
Everyone was a little shocked by this burst of laughter.
- Risotto laughed so loudly and heartily,' said Formaggio, surprised. Something must have died in the forest.
- ...ahah, no, it's okay,' Risotto finally calmed down. His cheeks were flushed with laughter, - Just... Forget it.
- Forget it? Are you kidding me? It's the first time I've seen you laugh! - Kurapika exclaimed.
- No, I was a little hasty. It's a little early to laugh. It's not time yet.
- When will it be time?
- When all this is over and we reach the end of this journey. And when we do, then we'll all laugh.
- Ha, I'll give you that. I'll be laughing with all of you when it's over.
- Well, that's good.
'Yeah, that's really nice. 'But I don't want to cry. Oh, I wish I didn't have to cry.'
Suddenly, somewhere off to the side, I heard someone climbing in the bushes.
- Oh, at last you're back Pesci, - Proshutto was already happy, - Well, did you catch fish...?
Suddenly everyone jumped to their feet, when instead of seeing Pesci, they saw something strange coming out of the bushes. It was either an animal or a monster.
It looked like a wolf-human hybrid. It was completely covered with wolf-like fur, had a wolf's head and tail. However, its limbs were like a human's. Fully human legs, on which it stood quite confidently at full height, and hands with sharp claws instead of normal fingernails.
- Fucking hell! - Giaccio cursed loudly, 'What the fuck is this mutant?!
- He must be dangerous, let's kill him. - Formaggio suggested.
- We can't! - Melone objected sharply, 'What if it's a very rare beast. Maybe it's in the red book. We'll have so many problems because of it.
- People again. - Suddenly the monster spoke.
- Holy shit! It can talk too! - Illuso was surprised.
- I didn't think I'd meet humans in the forest,' the monster continued, 'Did they get lost? It doesn't matter, it's to my advantage. Looks like I'm gonna have another good meal.
The monster bared its teeth and prepared to attack. It looked like it was trying to scare Risotto and the others, but no one felt fear, except for the surprise of seeing such an unusual beast.
Finally the beast attacked, and first it decided to attack Giaccio. He was about to strike when he was almost a metre away from Giaccio, but the latter reacted instantly and struck the beast in the jaw with his right side-arm, knocking out several of its fangs. To the surprise of Risotto and the others, the monster stayed on his feet, but from the look on his face he was surprised, or even shocked, at the outcome.
- Who are you...
Before the monster could speak, Giaccio threw another punch that knocked the beast to the ground.
- Piece of shit! - Giaccio shouted furiously and kicked the beast's head, gradually turning it into a bloody mess, - What the hell are you?! A fucking human-wolf hybrid?! How can that be?! Fucking werewolf! It can't be! What fucking miracles?! Where the fuck did you come from?! - When the beast's face turned into something that looked like a chop, he finally calmed down, 'Ugh, this is bullshit. Fucking mutant. He wanted to eat us, too. Well, if he wanted to eat us, then he's a cannibal? If he was a human, yes, but if he was a wolf, no. But he's both! I don't get it! Is this piece of shit trying to confuse me?! - Giaccio started pounding the wolf face chop again.
- Calm down, Giaccio! - Melone started to calm him down, -We all need to understand what this is. So let's you calm down and we can all calmly think about what it is.
After stopping beating the corpse and taking a deep breath in and out, Gyaccio finally calmed down.
- Oh, guys. - A voice came from outside.
Everyone turned around and saw Pesci a few metres away from them. What was remarkable was that he was carrying another monster on the hook of his fishing rod, but this time it had the features of a shark, a crocodile and a man. The monster was dead.
- Pesci, you're all right! - Prosciutto rejoiced, -Where did you come across this mutant?
- Well, I went to the river and started fishing. I'm sitting there, something is not biting, and suddenly this thing jumps out at me. So in self-defence, I had to kill it. Do you think it's edible?
- Drop it, Pesci, it's inedible. And this shit is obviously not normal. We have to figure out what it is.
Pesci unhooked the monster and approached the others.
- What kind of monsters are these? - Kurapika asked himself, 'I don't think it's normal.
- There's something else to worry about,' said Risotto looking around, 'There's more than just the two of them.
Everyone started to look around and noticed what Risotto noticed.
Between the trees, in the bushes, on the trees, these monsters were everywhere. They surrounded them on all sides. They all had features of a wide variety of animals, but they also all had human features to some degree.
'What the hell is wrong with this country? What are these mutants and where did they come from?'
- And what are we going to do? - Asked Kurapika, who was already in a defensive position with everyone else.
- Do? - Risotto thought for a moment, then turned to Illuso, 'Illuso, prepare your mirror. We're all going in there. Almost all of us... - He looked at Prosciutto.
- I understand you. - Prosciutto answered him.
- You don't have to hold back.
One by one, with the exception of Prosciutto, everyone began to enter the looking-glass. At the last moment, before entering the looking glass, Risotto saw Prosciutto release his Stand.
- Too bad, it was a nice forest. - Said Risotto looking around.
- What, what do you mean? - Kurapika asked with a bit of confusion, -Wait, really...
Kurapika finally realised. He looked around and saw that all the vegetation around him was withering away, gradually turning into withered things that could hardly be called vegetation, and some of the plants were turning into dust.
- So this is what happens when Prosciutto doesn't hold back. - Said Kurapika, still amazed at what he had seen.
- We can't delay any longer,' said Risotto with confidence in his voice, 'The appearance of these mutants has further complicated an already difficult situation. When Prosciutto is finished we immediately head for the settlement, which should be not far from here. There should be a transport there, which we'll take and head for Pagin immediately.
- How long will that take, do you know?
- I estimate a couple of days at the most. Hopefully there won't be any emergencies along the way. I didn't expect to find mutants like this around here.
- I don't think they'll ever take over the country. But I don't think they'll be much of a problem.
- I hope so. Although that wolf-man that Gyaccio killed was pretty tough. A normal human would have collapsed after the first blow, but this one stayed on his feet. These things are much stronger than normal humans and animals.
- I think Prosciutto is finished. - Said Illuso looking in his mirror into the real world.
- Good, then let's get out right now and move quickly.
They left the looking glass and without wasting a minute on other things they headed towards the settlement, which was not far away.
