kaiju abyss

Chapter 2: shattered like glass

All I could do was stare at the hand peeking out the debris. The world seemed to stop and my stomach felt empty

"S-sis?"

I said with a nervous laugh. I glanced behind me to see the kaiju still moving towards the shelter. I stood up with trembling arms and legs

"W-why... do you you exist? What purpose does a disease like you serve?"

I heard it. The sounds of metallic footsteps. I looked up and saw it standing at 40 meters tall. A sentinel. The giant humanoid machines that I only saw in recruitment adventures. They are rare machines manufactured by America and Germany. South Korea only has one of these bad boys. It's name? Pungbaek, Korea's pride

"We are saved!"

A man shouted. I was still shocked. The sentinel took a step forward before rushing over to the kaiju and tackling it to the ground. Sentinels were made for fighting against bigger kaiju. The two giants wrestled with eachother on the ground. The sentinel took out a giant knife and stabbed the kaiju in its fat stomach with Blood gushing out thay painted houses in red. The sentinel stabbed the kaiju in the stomach multiple times before ripping it's heart out. It

"Shit..."

The sentinel kept attacking the kaiju not giving it a chance to survive. Somewhere in there was a pilot controlling the machine. I heard some noise behind me

"H-huh?"

I looked at the pile of rubble my sister was beneath. I crawled the other way while my gaze was locked on her arm. It slowly changed colors into some sort of red or purple.

BAM!

the rubble flew everywhere and a rock hit my head. My consciousness began fading but I could make out some sort of figure. Six blacks legs. A torso like that of a centipede and the head of a human skull. The creature crawled towards me before rushing away.

"He should be up soon so there is no need for worries Mr Beom"

I opened my eyes and noticed a nurse and man standing there.

"Oh there we go"

The nurse said and looked at me while the man walked up to me

"Dad?"

I asked before shutting my mouth. It took a bit before the words I wanted to say came out.

"Kyung-sook is dead"

I said abruptly. My father's gaze was drawn to his feet.

"I know... it's not your fault"

"I thought I could protect her, thought maybe one day she could witness the outside world"

I closed my eyes remembering my sister beautiful long black hair, her smile and cheers

"Things like that happen. We live In a world where people can die at any moment"

I felt a surge of anger at my father's words

"That's no way to think! Acting like her life didn't matter! Why do so many people think that way!"

My shouts filled the room and the nurse just kept watching.

"Ack!"

I gripped my head tightly. There weer bandages covering my forehead. I hated the fact I couldn't protect my sister.

"You aren't some kind of knight in shining armor kid"

"Shut up... I don't want to hear it right now dad"

I closed my eyes and emptied my mind. I looked out the window to see almost every building covered in kaiju blood. The skies were gray, the rain pattered against the glass window. Half of Daegu was destroyed by just a single kaiju

"A kaiju of fortitude 7.6 had appeared two days ago in Daegu. Not a single kaiju has been in Daegu for over five years so citizens are in shock. In other news kaiju appearances have increased by 14.3% since last last year. There are many theories as to why there is such a big spike but there is no concrete proof yet"

I listened to the news while occasionally glancing at the outside. Cleanup was already underway

"I can't imagine having to clean all that up... poor cleanup crew. That sentinel made their work even harder"

"I used to work in the cleanup crew"

My father said. We were in the same room? Of course...

"Your luck is outstanding"

"Kaiju blood stinks like rotten eggs. Working all day in that hot ass uniform was something else I'll tell ya."

I rolled my eyes, he's told me this story so many times already, About his days when working as part of the cleanup crew. He seemed so proud of it for some reason. I guess I had no right to judge him though. I was unemployed all my life until he told me to take over his work

"How's your condition?

"Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, They said I got it from inhaling fumes from cars and chemicals..."

"I see... when are they gonna let you out? You've been here for a month or so... why have they kept you here for so long?"

I asked with a raised eyebrow

"That- I'll tell you later"

My father looked away from me. I could tell he was very obviously lying.

I was discharged after three days. I walked back home and the entire house was destroyed. Behemoths flew above me transporting materials, food supplies and (behemoths are a sort of aviation vehicle similar to a flying semi truck. They were developed in japan) medicine.

I glanced at my house again before begging to search around for anything that remained intact.
