After taking care of the tabby cat's massive corpse and cleaning up all the blood that had likely come from it in the living room, and take my father back to his room.

I was now eating a burger with Mr. Mustache while checking on the emergency mission's completion…

There were still some things I couldn't understand about what had happened, but I decided to ignore them for now and focus on what I'd gained. Speaking of gains, the crystals and Creation Points were nice, but nothing special. The real deal was the random recipes; there were plenty of good things there.

A recipe for some kind of system-linked surveillance camera? Perfect! I could now keep an eye on the building's entrance since, according to the system, I was the last resident there…

The second recipe was a system-linked speaker of some kind. I didn't see much use for it at the time, but the system informed me it could be installed alongside the camera to allow for remote communication while I stayed safe...

The third item was a recipe for a water heater! It was so incredible that I created it immediately; the water was getting too cold, and the winds were getting colder to continue bathing outdoors. I also didn't want to use up my furnace crystal just to heat water for bathing... But according to the system data, with this heater, I could heat and keep the water for the entire pool warm with just a single Level 1 crystal. It was small and portable, and could also be installed in the bedroom bathtub.

The fourth and fifth items complemented each other; it was the second melee weapon recipe I'd obtained since the kitchen knife: a bow and arrow...

If I learned how to use this bow and arrow, I could eliminate zombies and animals much more efficiently and safely. Speaking of which, I needed to collect a lot of crystals as fuel for the heaters I would create for William, Nina, Laura, and her father…

I pulled out one of the many maps I'd kept in my inventory before everything began. It wouldn't even be there if it weren't for the clever William's reminder. He'd warned me these things would be useful, and now they really were.

I began studying and calculating when I should go to them and what would be the shortest, and perhaps safest, route to get to everyone's house from my building's location. While I had some thoughts of my own, I decided to ask the system's opinion:

"System, when do you think the best time to go to them would be? How long can they hold out before the cold becomes too much to handle?"

[It should start snowing in two more weeks, so at that time, it would be best for you to go to them. The cold will slow down all the zombies and level 2 mutants, giving you a better chance of survival. But the moment it starts snowing, you also only have 7 more days before it becomes impossible for you or anyone below level 3 to leave your house…]

"This is terrible, not even a level 2 like Mister Mustache will be able to get out?"

[Exactly! After a while, even level 3 mutants won't be able to stay outside in the cold winds for long…]

"That just leaves me with the problem of the crystals…" Lucien thought.

For now, let's craft the bow and arrow… Once I'm confident in my aim, I can hunt daily in the surrounding area with Mr. Mustache, or even kill the zombies and mutants from a safe distance while staying within the safety of the building.

Three days later, many things had changed in Lucien's building…

First, the door to his apartment had been completely blocked from the inside using several pieces of furniture. It had been broken down, and Lucien lacked the necessary knowledge to repair or replace it.

He also did this to prevent new people from breaking into his apartment again, putting his father and his supplies at risk.

To avoid being trapped inside his own house, Lucien dug a hole that led directly to the apartment on the ground floor, which was the deceased Mrs. Helena's apartment. With her door still intact, this became the place he and Mr. Mustache could enter and exit.

With his door completely blocked, Lucien took advantage and filled the corridors he and Mr. Mustache no longer used with Crystal Bombs. He also placed many of them on the ceiling of the top-floor stairwells, particularly acid bombs, which resembled a pulsating living tumor once activated and could be attached to any surface. This was done as a preventative measure to completely block the entire floor in case of an emergency.

To be sure, whenever he left, he also left bombs inside Mrs. Helena's apartment... Cameras and speakers were installed in strategic locations throughout the building, covering all main entrances, and he even used traces of animal carcasses, such as feathers and bones, to make his floor quite frightening for unwanted visitors, including a sign warning of dead animals on that floor...

Satisfied with the arrangements, Lucien created the bow and arrow and began practicing target practice daily in the leisure area on the ground floor of the building, which had a few tennis courts and a mini-golf course.

His aim quickly improved, and he could hit stationary targets 50–70 meters away. This only happened because the system told him he was now a mutant, with enhanced dexterity and senses.

The bow created by the system was the appropriate size for his height, and the arrows were made of bird bones and feathers. But surprisingly, they weren't heavy, the bow was only level 1, and the arrows didn't require crystals, allowing him to have 30 of them at the time.

Finally satisfied with his aim on inanimate targets, Lucien took a deep breath and decided it was time to test his aim on live targets. He was very nervous, because this would also be the first time he would personally kill a zombie…
