Chapter 19: Traps
A reddish-brown tunnel, designed to give a cool yet slightly warm feeling, stretched before them. Naviga and Minerva meticulously searched every inch and corner for a key or mechanism to open the ominous black-carved door.
Despite their thorough search, they found nothing, and frustration grew evident on their faces.
Both understood that the key or mechanism to open the door was likely in the hands of the humans who created the tunnel. This realization left them with only one option: to destroy the door.
Naviga looked at Minerva and said, "Young Miss, it seems we have no choice but to destroy this door."
Minerva nodded in agreement. Naviga added, "It's better to use talismans so we can guard against any traps that might activate."
Minerva agreed and took out three fire talismans. Both steadied themselves, prepared for any retaliatory traps.
Minerva activated the talismans, sending them flying toward the door.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The talismans exploded in succession, their fire filling the tunnel and causing the heat to surge.
Dust and bits of rock flew through the air, the sound of the explosions echoing throughout the space.
However, as the dust settled, they saw the reddish-brown walls were unscathed, as if nothing had happened.
As the dust settled, they noticed something unexpected—the door was no longer there. Instead, a pitch-black space loomed before them, absorbing all light.
Even the glow from their fire magic could not penetrate the oppressive darkness. They stood wary, anticipating danger.
Suddenly, the silence was shattered by the sharp whoosh of arrows flying through the black void.
One after another, a barrage of twenty or more arrows shot out, hurtling toward them with lethal precision.
Minerva and Naviga reacted instantly, summoning Universal Essence shields. The shields rose like towering mountains, impenetrable and steadfast.
The arrows struck the barriers, each impact accompanied by a faint hiss, as if the arrows carried a corrosive property. Despite their fierce assault, the arrows could not penetrate the Universal Essence shields.
However, their touch left faint scorch marks, as if trying to erode the very fabric of the shields.
Minerva and Naviga were filled with doubt in their hearts, wondering why the arrows made a melting sound when they touched the Universal Essence shield.
However, they didn't have time to ponder the cause.
After the arrows ceased, the sound of grinding metal echoed through the tunnel. Four iron balls attached to heavy chains suddenly descended from the ceiling, swinging toward them with deadly force.
Naviga quickly cast her Moonlit Shield Art, forming a radiant white shield above their heads.
The iron balls struck the shield with resounding clangs, but it held firm, absorbing the impact.
"Miss, you'll need to cut these chains," Naviga said urgently, her voice steady but tense.
Minerva hummed in agreement, already reaching into her space ring to retrieve her sword.
As she unsheathed it, Naviga deactivated the Moonlit Shield, allowing the shield to dissipate gracefully as the iron balls came closer again.
With precise movements, Minerva slashed at the chains, her blade cutting through them effortlessly.
In one swift strike, she severed all four chains, sending the iron balls crashing harmlessly to the ground.
After cutting the chains, they barely had time to react as another threat came from behind. A giant rock, as wide as the tunnel with only a small gap visible, rumble soundechoed in tunnel, echoing through the tunnel.
Naviga quickly took out an ice talisman and threw it at the rock. The talisman exploded, temporarily halting the rock, though the ice was nearly destroyed in the process.
Suddenly, a loud sound like two rocks colliding echoed as the ice shattered, and the rock continued rolling toward them.
To make matters worse, another rock appeared, rolling from behind the first one.
Seeing this, Minerva and Naviga each took out two ice talismans and one sword talisman.
They used the ice talismans to stop both rocks and the sword talisman to slice the first rock.
The second rock halted as it collided with the two halves of the first.
For added safety, they activated a micro-level ice talisman, freezing both rocks completely , Even the twenty arrows in the ground have frozen. The intense heat in the tunnel gave way to a chilling cold.
They waited for five minutes, listening for any signs of another trap. When no sound came, Naviga spoke: "Miss, it seems the traps are no more."
Minerva nodded but replied cautiously, "We still need to be vigilant. We don't know what lies in this space or if another trap might trigger." Naviga nodded in agreement.
The two stepped into the dark space beyond the blasted door. Minerva cast fire on her hand, her superior control allowing for a brighter and steadier flame than Naviga's. The room illuminated, revealing its details.
The walls were gray, and near the doorframe where the talismans had exploded, traces of the melted door remained.
The room was eerily quiet, with gray walls covered in orange spiderwebs concentrated in the corners. The webs glowed faintly, resembling fire.
Minerva observed the webs and spoke: "These are from the offspring of the Ashspinner Spider.
Their young prefer quiet and less heated areas while maturing. It seems the owner hasn't been here for a long time." Naviga nodded, her wariness increasing.
They advanced further into the room. As they proceeded, they noticed inactive magic bulbs embedded in the walls, overrun by the orange spiderwebs.
The room felt abandoned, yet the strange glow of the webs hinted at a hidden danger.
Moving cautiously, they ventured deeper into the unknown space.
As they continued walking, they noticed more magic bulbs lining the walls.
Suddenly, the color of the bulbs shifted—what were once yellow bulbs now changed to blue.
Unlike the yellow bulbs, these blue ones were free of Ashspinner spiderwebs.
Naviga observed this and said to Minerva, "Miss, it seems these magic bulbs are ice-coated ones. That might explain the absence of the webs."
Minerva nodded thoughtfully. "It's likely. The spiders must avoid areas where the temperature is colder than they can tolerate."
They pressed onward, moving deeper into the dark room.
For more than five minutes, they encountered nothing but the dead magic bulbs and the persistent presence of Ashspinner spiderwebs clinging to the walls and corners.
Despite the uneventful surroundings, their caution never wavered, each step taken with the readiness to face any sudden danger.
