Chapter 8: Chapter 8 The jungle first test
Chapter 8: The Jungle's First Test
The dim light filtering through the jungle canopy grew weaker as Natasha pressed on, the lush surroundings becoming denser and more menacing. The vibrant colors she had seen earlier faded into deep greens and ominous shadows. It felt as if the jungle itself was preparing for something.
Suddenly, the path ahead disappeared, replaced by a gaping chasm. Natasha froze, peering into the darkness below. The sound of rushing water echoed from somewhere far beneath her. A narrow, rotting wooden bridge stretched across the gap, its planks swaying in the wind.
A glowing text box appeared in front of her:
"First Test: The Bridge of Doubt. Do not let fear consume you. Time is of the essence."
Natasha stared at the bridge, her pulse quickening. The boards looked brittle, as though a single step would send her plummeting into the abyss. The jungle seemed to taunt her, the wind howling through the chasm like laughter.
"You've got this," she whispered to herself, gripping the straps of her pack.
She took a tentative step onto the bridge. The wood groaned under her weight, and for a moment, she froze.
"Come on, Natasha. One step at a time."
The bridge swayed violently as she moved forward, each step more precarious than the last. Halfway across, a sudden, deafening roar erupted from the jungle behind her. Natasha whipped around, her heart pounding, but saw nothing.
The bridge jolted, and she stumbled, dropping to her hands and knees to steady herself.
A new text box appeared:
"Warning: Danger Approaches."
Natasha glanced back again, and this time, she saw them—shadowy, wolf-like creatures emerging from the jungle. Their glowing red eyes locked onto her, and they began to charge.
"Oh, come on!" she shouted, scrambling to her feet.
She sprinted across the bridge, the rotting planks cracking beneath her. The creatures reached the edge of the chasm, snarling and snapping, but they didn't hesitate. One by one, they leaped onto the bridge, their claws digging into the fragile wood.
Natasha reached the other side just as the first creature lunged at her. She spun around, slashing with her knife. The blade caught the creature across the snout, and it yelped, retreating slightly.
The bridge creaked ominously, and Natasha's eyes darted to the frayed ropes holding it in place. An idea sparked.
"Let's see how you like this."
She grabbed a rock from the ground and hurled it at one of the ropes. The impact caused it to snap, and the bridge sagged dangerously.
The creatures hesitated, their glowing eyes flicking to the swaying planks. Natasha didn't wait for them to decide. She threw another rock, breaking the second rope.
With a final, deafening snap, the bridge collapsed, taking the creatures with it. Natasha stepped back, breathing heavily as she watched them disappear into the darkness below.
A new text box appeared:
"First Test Complete. Proceed to the next challenge."
Natasha leaned against a tree, trying to calm her racing heart. She glanced at the empty chasm behind her and shook her head.
"That's what you call a warm-up? This game is insane."
She turned back to the path ahead, steeling herself. The jungle's first test was behind her, but she knew there were many more to come.
"Liam, wherever you are, you'd better be worth all this."
With a deep breath, she adjusted her pack and continued into the jungle, ready for whatever came next.
