Chapter 66: Çhapter 61 the floating isles
The Floating Isles came into view as Natasha and Alex stepped onto the ancient platform. A warm, golden light emanated from the suspended landmasses, each floating at different heights, connected by narrow, rickety bridges. The sky was an endless expanse of brilliant blue, speckled with glowing orbs that pulsed softly like breathing stars. Wind whipped around them, tugging at their clothes and hair. Below, the abyss stretched endlessly, threatening to swallow anything that fell.
"Alright," Alex said, taking a deep breath. "How hard can jumping from floating rock to floating rock be?"
Natasha shot him a wry smile. "You say that now, but give it five minutes. Something always tries to kill us."
As if on cue, a loud caw split the air, and a massive bird-like creature dove from one of the higher isles. Its wings shimmered with metallic feathers, and its talons gleamed as sharp as knives.
"I hate it when you're right," Alex muttered, unsheathing his blade.
The creature swooped low, aiming straight for them. Natasha rolled to the side, her sword already in her hand. "Get to the next platform!" she shouted. "I'll keep it distracted."
"Oh no, we're not splitting up again," Alex replied, narrowly dodging the creature's claws. "Last time, you almost got eaten by a—"
"Less talking, more moving!" Natasha yelled, cutting him off mid-sentence. She slashed at the bird, her blade glancing off its metallic feathers.
Alex hesitated, then spotted a glowing orb hovering near the edge of the current platform. It pulsated as if calling to him. "I think I've got an idea," he said, sprinting toward it. The orb shot upward, leading him toward the next floating isle.
The creature let out an earsplitting screech and turned its attention toward Alex. Natasha seized the opportunity, lunging forward to slice at its wing. This time, her blade found a weak spot, and the creature faltered, its flight pattern wobbling.
"Go!" she called, leaping after Alex, her boots skidding on the moss-covered stone as she landed on the next platform.
Alex was already sprinting toward another orb, his face lit with excitement. "These things are like checkpoints!" he said. "Maybe they guide us to the top!"
"Or maybe they're traps," Natasha countered, panting as she caught up to him. "You ever think about that?"
"Nope," Alex grinned, grabbing the next orb. It pulsed brightly, and a shimmering bridge of light appeared, connecting to the next floating isle.
Natasha rolled her eyes. "Of course it worked. Dumb luck strikes again."
Before Alex could reply, the metallic bird swooped back, this time with two smaller, equally vicious-looking companions. The trio circled the pair like vultures, their cries echoing ominously.
"Uh, Natasha," Alex said, backing toward the bridge. "I think we've got company."
Natasha groaned, raising her sword. "Why is it always more than one? Can't we just fight one thing for once?"
"Maybe they're here for a family picnic," Alex quipped, his grip tightening on his weapon. "You know, just dropping by to ruin our day."
Natasha smirked despite herself. "You've got jokes now? Fine. You take the big one, I'll handle the kids."
"Deal," Alex said, charging toward the largest bird. He leapt into the air, slashing upward with his sword. The bird screeched in fury, dodging his strike with a sharp twist of its wings.
Meanwhile, Natasha faced off against the two smaller creatures. They darted toward her in unison, their talons aimed for her throat. She ducked and rolled, her blade flashing as she struck one across the chest. It let out a guttural cry, its metallic feathers scattering like sparks as it plummeted into the abyss.
The remaining bird shrieked in rage, diving at her with renewed fury. Natasha sidestepped at the last moment, grabbing a loose rock and hurling it at the creature's head. The makeshift projectile stunned it just long enough for her to deliver a clean strike.
Alex, meanwhile, was locked in an aerial battle with the larger bird. Each of his jumps and strikes became more daring as he chased the creature across the floating platforms. At one point, he miscalculated his landing and nearly fell, catching himself on the edge of a platform by sheer luck.
"Having fun up there?" Natasha called, wiping sweat from her brow as she finished off the second smaller bird.
"Oh, you know," Alex replied, pulling himself back up. "Just another relaxing day in the jungle."
He finally managed to land a decisive blow, his blade piercing the creature's wing. It let out one final, ear-piercing cry before spiraling into the abyss below. Alex collapsed onto the platform, breathing heavily.
"Next time," he said, "let's just take a nap instead of chasing glowing orbs."
Natasha chuckled, offering him a hand. "You're the one who loves the adventure. Don't complain now."
They pressed on, climbing higher as the floating isles became more intricate. Some were covered in lush greenery, while others were barren and cracked, as if time itself had forgotten them. The orbs continued to guide their path, each one unveiling new challenges.
At one point, they encountered a narrow bridge made entirely of fragile crystal. The slightest wrong step caused the surface to crack beneath their weight. Alex led the way, his arms outstretched for balance.
"Don't look down," he said, glancing back at Natasha.
"I wasn't planning on it until you said that," she replied, her voice tense.
Midway across, a sudden gust of wind nearly knocked them off. Natasha instinctively grabbed Alex's arm, and for a brief moment, their eyes met.
"Don't let go," she said, her voice soft but firm.
"I wouldn't dream of it," Alex replied, his tone uncharacteristically serious.
They reached the other side safely, though both were visibly shaken. Natasha released his arm, her cheeks slightly flushed. "Let's keep moving," she said, avoiding his gaze.
The final orb led them to the largest isle yet—a sprawling expanse with a glowing altar at its center. Standing before the altar was a figure cloaked in shimmering light.
"Welcome," the figure said, its voice resonant and otherworldly. "You have proven your resilience, your courage, and your bond. But the final test awaits."
Natasha and Alex exchanged a glance. "What kind of test?" Alex asked.
The figure raised its hand, and the ground beneath them began to shift. The isle trembled as platforms rose into the air, creating a maze of floating obstacles.
"Reach the top," the figure said. "Only then will you find what you seek."
Natasha sighed, drawing her sword. "Of course. It's never simple, is it?"
Alex grinned, his confidence returning. "Hey, at least it's not another giant bird."
They took off, leaping from platform to platform, dodging falling debris and magical traps. The stakes were higher than ever, but for the first time in a while, they felt alive—like every challenge was sharpening their skills and strengthening their partnership.
As they reached the top, the altar glowed brightly, revealing a fragment of their quest. Natasha picked it up, feeling a surge of energy coursing through her.
Alex leaned against his sword, grinning. "So, what's next? A floating volcano? A sky dragon?"
Natasha laughed, tucking the fragment into her pouch. "Let's not give the universe any ideas."
For the first time in what felt like forever, they shared a moment of pure, unburdened joy, ready for whatever came next.
