Chapter 10: A Raven to Cross
Natasha trudged forward, her resolve growing stronger despite the lingering unease from the jungle's test. The mist thinned as the path opened into a clearing bathed in dim, golden light. In the center, a large, ancient tree stood with twisted roots that reached out like claws.
Perched on one of the branches was a massive raven, its feathers shimmering as if made of onyx. Its eyes glowed a piercing yellow, and when it turned to face Natasha, she felt an unnatural chill run down her spine.
A text box popped up:
"Challenge Ahead: Solve the Riddle of the Raven to Continue. Failure Will Be Punished."
"Great, more riddles," Natasha muttered, wiping her hands on her pants. "Can't it ever be just a straight path?"
The raven cawed loudly, its voice echoing through the clearing. It tilted its head, examining her with an intelligence that felt far too human.
"Speak your question," Natasha said, gripping the hilt of her knife just in case.
The raven's eyes flashed, and it spoke in a deep, gravelly voice:
"I am not alive, but I can grow. I do not have lungs, but I need air. I do not have a mouth, and yet I drown. What am I?"
Natasha frowned, pacing in front of the tree. Her mind raced through possibilities. "Not alive, but can grow… needs air but drowns… What needs air to survive and can drown without it?"
She snapped her fingers. "Fire!"
The raven let out a sharp cry, its wings flaring. For a moment, Natasha feared she had been wrong, but then the text box reappeared:
"Correct Answer. Passage Unlocked."
The raven took flight, circling above her before diving into the tree. The twisted roots parted, revealing a hidden tunnel that descended into darkness. Natasha hesitated, staring at the gaping hole.
"Why do I feel like this is just the beginning?" she muttered.
A faint growling sound from the jungle behind her made the decision for her. Natasha tightened her grip on her knife and stepped into the tunnel, the roots closing behind her.
---
Inside, the air was damp and cold. The walls of the tunnel glowed faintly, etched with strange, glowing symbols. The sound of dripping water echoed around her, and Natasha couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched.
Halfway through the tunnel, she heard a familiar voice whisper her name. "Natasha…"
She froze, her blood running cold. "Liam?"
The voice didn't respond, but the faint sound of footsteps echoed ahead. Natasha broke into a run, her heart pounding.
The tunnel opened into a small cavern, and in the center stood a figure with its back to her. It was a boy, about Liam's size, but something about him was… off.
"Liam?" Natasha called cautiously.
The figure turned, revealing glowing red eyes and a twisted grin. Natasha's stomach dropped as she realized it wasn't Liam at all—it was another one of the jungle's tricks.
The creature lunged at her, but Natasha was ready. She dodged to the side, slashing with her knife. The blade connected, and the creature let out a guttural scream before dissolving into shadows.
Breathing heavily, Natasha stood her ground as a text box appeared:
"Warning: The Jungle Tests Your Resolve. Stay Vigilant."
Natasha wiped sweat from her brow, muttering under her breath. "This game really doesn't let up, does it?"
She looked around the cavern, spotting another tunnel on the far side. Steeling herself, she moved forward, her resolve stronger than ever.
