Judgment of the Endless (MarvelxDC)

Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Forming bonds and pacts

Lady Death, shrouded in her dark, flowing robes, stepped into the void between worlds, her mind set on finding her counterpart. The fabric of reality parted before her, creating a path to a realm that few could enter—a place where the lines between existence and non-existence blurred, and time held no meaning.

This was the domain of Death of the Endless, a being as old as the universe itself.

She emerged in a vast, gray expanse, where the horizon seemed to stretch on forever. The air was heavy with a quiet stillness, broken only by the distant sound of wind rustling through unseen trees.

Lady Death moved forward, her footsteps silent on the ethereal ground. She was not one to be unnerved easily, but this place, this domain, always had a way of making her feel… small.

Ahead, a figure stood by the edge of a cliff, overlooking a sea of shimmering, silver mist. She was dressed simply in black, her dark hair flowing freely in the wind. Her presence was calm, peaceful even, but beneath it lay an ancient power that was both comforting and terrifying. This was Death of the Endless, known to some as Morta.

Morta turned as Lady Death approached, her expression one of serene curiosity. "Lady Death," she greeted softly, her voice carrying a warmth that contrasted with her title. "It's been a while since you've visited."

Lady Death nodded, coming to stand beside Morta. "It has," she agreed, her tone more serious. "But recent events have forced my hand."

Morta's eyes, deep and knowing, turned back to the sea of mist. "I felt the disturbance," she said, her voice tinged with concern. "Life has been… active."

Lady Death sighed, her gaze following Morta's. "Too active. She's pulled Thanos into her schemes, all to play some cosmic game with her brother, Darius."

Morta frowned, a rare expression for the usually composed Endless. "Darius," she repeated, her tone thoughtful. "He's powerful, yes, but why would Life involve herself so directly? She usually stays within her own domain."

"That's what concerns me," Lady Death admitted. "Life has always been unpredictable, but this time it feels different. She's acting out of character, and I fear her actions could have consequences we can't foresee."

Morta nodded, her expression grave. "Life is driven by her own desires, and sometimes those desires can be… overwhelming. But if she's targeting Darius, it might be more than just a game to her."

Lady Death looked at Morta, her eyes sharp. "You think there's something more?"

Morta sighed softly, folding her arms as she contemplated. "Life and Darius share a bond that's deeper than most. If she's targeting him, it might be her way of… asserting her dominance, or perhaps reminding him of her power. But whatever her motives, it's clear that she's set something in motion that could spiral out of control."

Lady Death felt a pang of worry at Morta's words. "I need your help," she said, her voice firm. "You understand Life better than anyone, and you've dealt with Darius before. If we're to keep this from turning into a disaster, I need to know what we're dealing with."

Morta turned to face her fully, her expression gentle but resolute. "I will help you," she said simply. "But we must tread carefully. Life is not an enemy to be confronted directly. If we push too hard, she might react in ways we can't predict."

Lady Death nodded, grateful for Morta's support. "Agreed. But we can't sit idly by either. If Life is involving other beings like Thanos, it's only a matter of time before things escalate."

Morta's eyes softened with understanding. "Darius is strong, but he's still adjusting to the mortal plane. We need to find a way to protect him without provoking Life."

A silence fell between them, both of them lost in thought. The sea of mist below them continued to swirl, reflecting the uncertainty of their situation.

Finally, Morta spoke, her voice gentle. "Perhaps the answer lies in Darius himself. He has a unique way of handling things… a way that could defuse the situation without violence."

Lady Death considered this, a small smile tugging at her lips. "He does have a way of charming even the most dangerous beings," she admitted.

Morta smiled softly, a rare but comforting sight. "Yes, he does. Let's hope that charm is enough to keep him safe this time."

Lady Death nodded, her resolve strengthening. "Then it's settled. We'll watch over him, and if the time comes, we'll step in."

Morta placed a hand on Lady Death's shoulder, a gesture of solidarity. "We will do what we must," she said, her tone reassuring. "Together, we can keep the balance."

With that, the two figures stood side by side, their shared concern for Darius uniting them. They knew the road ahead would be difficult, but they were prepared to face it together.

Lady Death took one last look at the endless sea of mist before turning to leave, her thoughts already on the challenges to come. Morta remained where she was, watching the horizon, her mind filled with a quiet determination.

They both knew that the cosmos was a delicate balance, one that could easily be upset by the whims of beings like Life. But they also knew that with their combined strength and wisdom, they could protect those they cared about.

And so, with their course set, the two Deaths prepared to face whatever challenges Life would throw their way, ready to defend the balance of the universe—and Darius—from any threat that came their way.

Mr. Nobody leaned back in his armchair, a crooked grin stretching across his shapeless face. The chaotic whirl of events unfolding in the multiverse was, to him, a delightful symphony of disorder, a crescendo of confusion that he found utterly intoxicating.

As a being of pure anarchy, he thrived on this—on the unexpected twists, the nonsensical turns, and the pure unpredictability that ruled the cosmos.

He swirled a glass of some bizarre, shimmering liquid—probably something from a dimension where drinks drank you instead—and watched the multiverse play out like a television show that was just starting to get good.

But there was something else, something that made even him, a being with no form or rhyme, pause in his enjoyment.

Two Deaths. Two identical concepts—no, not quite identical, but similar enough to boggle even his incomprehensible mind—working together, aligning their purposes. It was something that shouldn't happen, something that shouldn't be possible.

Death was a constant, a singular end that came for all, or at least, it should have been. But now, here they were, two embodiments of that final inevitability, converging, cooperating, and existing in the same space.

"Well, well, well," Mr. Nobody murmured, his voice a low, conspiratorial whisper that echoed in places where sound shouldn't be heard. "This is... deliciously absurd."

He leaned forward, resting his formless elbows on an invisible surface. His eyes, or at least the place where his eyes should be, narrowed as he observed the two Deaths—Morta and the other Death, both operating with a kind of unity that made his non-existent skin crawl.

The sheer orderliness of it, the alignment of such powerful entities, made him itch for a little bit of... fun.

Breaking the fourth wall was second nature to Mr. Nobody. Reality was just another plaything to him, another box of fragile, breakable rules that he loved to shake up, twist around, and occasionally, smash into tiny, irreparable pieces.

And now, as he watched the drama unfold, he felt the familiar urge to meddle, to twist the plot in a way that only he could.

"Are you seeing this, oh mighty author?" he whispered, his voice slipping through the fabric of reality like a sly serpent.

"Two Deaths, working together. It's the kind of paradox that should drive you mad, but instead, it's just sitting there, all neat and tidy. Don't you think it's about time to shake things up? Make it a little... less predictable?"

He chuckled, a sound that reverberated through the cosmic strings of the multiverse, touching on realities where chaos reigned supreme.

"And let's be honest here, why isn't this story about me? I mean, look at all the potential! The drama, the wit, the sheer entertainment value of a character like yours truly. I could be the star of this show, not just some side character thrown in for flavor."

The idea of being the main character tickled his fancy—after all, who better to lead a tale of cosmic chaos than the embodiment of it? He could rewrite the rules, bend the narrative to his will, and turn this whole epic saga into a beautifully chaotic mess.

"But no," he sighed theatrically, "I'm stuck on the sidelines, watching these oh-so-serious deities prance around like they've got everything under control. Where's the fun in that?"

He waved a hand, and reality rippled in response, momentarily reshaping into a scene where he was the central figure, standing atop a mountain of fallen heroes, grinning maniacally as the world burned around him.

It was a fleeting vision, a what-could-have-been that he let dissolve with a wistful sigh.

"Still, I suppose there's some entertainment in watching them struggle. But don't get too comfortable, dear author. I'm here, and I'm watching. And maybe—just maybe—I'll decide to give your little plot a twist when you least expect it."

He leaned back again, crossing his legs as he returned his attention to the ongoing events. The two Deaths were still working in tandem, their purposes aligned in a way that defied the very nature of their existence.

It was unnatural, it was bizarre, and to Mr. Nobody, it was absolutely fascinating.

"But for now," he muttered, sipping from his glass of whatever-it-was, "I'll let the pieces fall where they may. Just remember, I'm only a thought away. And who knows? Maybe I'll decide that this little story needs a bit more... Nobody in it."

He chuckled again, the sound slipping through the narrative like a whisper in the dark, a reminder that in a world of order and chaos, he was always there, waiting in the wings, ready to step into the spotlight.

"After all, what's a story without a little anarchy?"

With that, Mr. Nobody returned to his observations, his grin widening as he imagined all the ways he could twist this tale to his liking. The chaos was brewing, the players were moving, and somewhere in the back of his mind, he was already plotting his next move.

And who knows? Maybe the next time, he wouldn't be so content to sit on the sidelines.
