Chapter 107: 105: Verity and Aurama [I] (Side-Story)
The warm glow of the previous evening's family time lingered in the air as Verity bounded excitedly through the halls of the Agency, her small hand gripping her new cousin Aurama's.
The younger girl, with her chaotic wild white, gold, and black hair, had a curious look in her mismatched eyes as she followed Verity's enthusiastic lead.
Trailing behind them was Zuri, the massive, sleek panther who padded silently along, her golden eyes ever watchful.
Floating just above them, Whimsy the Cheshire Cat grinned lazily, his striped form occasionally spinning in midair like a top.
"You're going to love this!" Verity exclaimed, her voice full of excitement. "There's so much to see! The Agency is basically a whole universe squished into one big building!"
Aurama giggled, her chaotic energy dimmed slightly by her cousin's contagious enthusiasm. "It's that big?"
"Bigger!" Verity declared. "Come on, let me show you my favorite places!"
Their first stop was a sprawling garden filled with vibrant plants from countless dimensions. Giant glowing mushrooms stood next to tiny, delicate flowers that sang in harmony. Streams of water hovered mid-air, flowing in impossible loops.
"This is the Gardens of Serenity!" Verity said, twirling as she ran down a crystal path. "Mama Diana comes here to meditate sometimes. But I like to play hide-and-seek with Whimsy!"
Aurama's eyes widened as a group of tiny floating jellyfish-like creatures bobbed toward her, their translucent bodies glowing softly. She reached out, and one brushed against her fingers, leaving a faint trail of sparkles.
"They're so pretty," she whispered.
"Wanna see something cool?" Verity asked with a mischievous grin. She clapped her hands, and the jellyfish scattered, creating a shimmering cascade of light.
Aurama laughed, clapping her hands too. "Show me more!"
Next, Verity led Aurama to an enormous library that seemed to stretch endlessly in every direction. Towering bookshelves were crammed with tomes, scrolls, and glowing holograms.
A soft, golden light illuminated the space, and the smell of old paper mingled with something otherworldly.
"This is the Infinite Library!" Verity announced. "Papa says it has every story ever written and even ones that haven't been written yet!"
"Every story?" Aurama echoed, her eyes sparkling.
"Yup! Sometimes, when I'm bored, Whimsy and I sneak in here and pick a book at random. Once, we read about a world where cats ruled over humans. Whimsy loved that one!"
Whimsy floated down, curling into a loaf atop a nearby book pile. "A society of feline overlords is the ideal, wouldn't you agree?" he purred.
Aurama giggled and whispered, "Maybe I'll find a story about us one day."
The next stop was the Stellar Observatory, a massive dome with walls that looked like the night sky.
Stars, galaxies, and nebulae swirled and sparkled, creating an awe-inspiring view of the cosmos.
"This is where Papa Darius likes to think," Verity said, her voice dropping to a reverent whisper. "He says it helps him understand big stuff. Like, really big stuff."
Aurama stepped closer to the glass-like walls, her reflection merging with the stars. "It's beautiful," she said softly.
Zuri sat down beside her, her sleek form glowing faintly in the starlight. Aurama reached out to scratch behind the panther's ear, and Zuri leaned into her touch, purring softly.
"I could stay here forever," Aurama said, her voice dreamy.
"But then you'd miss the arcade!" Verity shouted, grabbing her cousin's hand.
Bright neon lights and cheerful music greeted them as they entered the Agency's arcade. Rows of machines and games stretched as far as the eye could see. Heroes and staff members alike were scattered throughout, playing games, competing, and laughing.
"This is my absolute favorite place!" Verity said, her excitement reaching a fever pitch. "You can play anything you can think of!"
Aurama's eyes darted around, taking in the flashing lights and energetic sounds. "Can we play that one?" she asked, pointing to a racing game where holographic vehicles zoomed through a futuristic city.
"You bet we can!" Verity said, already running toward the machine.
The two girls climbed into the seats, their feet barely reaching the pedals. Verity picked a sleek hovercar while Aurama chose a vehicle that looked like a dragon. Whimsy perched on the back of Aurama's seat, his tail twitching as he watched.
The race began, and the girls laughed and shouted as their vehicles sped through loops, dodged obstacles, and performed impossible stunts. Aurama won by a hair, and Verity threw up her hands in mock defeat.
"Beginner's luck!" Verity teased.
"Or maybe I'm just awesome," Aurama replied with a cheeky grin.
As the group left the arcade, Whimsy floated ahead of them, his grin wider than usual.
"You know," he began, his tone dripping with mischief, "we've had quite the little tour. But don't you think it's time for a real adventure?"
Aurama's eyes lit up. "A real adventure?"
"Indeed," Whimsy replied, spinning lazily in the air. "Why settle for wandering the Agency when there's a whole multiverse out there?"
Verity looked hesitant. "Papa might not like that…"
"Oh, but he will!" Whimsy said. "We'll ask him first, of course. I'm nothing if not a responsible guide."
The group found Darius in one of the Agency's grand lounges, lounging on a massive chair with Diana and Ororo beside him.
The girls ran up to him, their excitement spilling over as they explained Whimsy's proposal.
Darius raised an eyebrow, his lips twitching into a small smile. "An adventure, huh? Where exactly are you planning to go, Whimsy?"
"Oh, nowhere too dangerous," Whimsy replied, his tail flicking innocently. "Just a little jaunt to somewhere interesting. A learning experience, if you will."
Darius considered for a moment, then looked at the girls. "What do you think?"
Aurama nodded eagerly. "Please, Uncle Darius! I wanna see more!"
Verity clasped her hands together. "We'll be careful, I promise!"
Darius sighed, his smile growing. "All right. But you listen to Whimsy, and you come back at the first sign of trouble. Got it?"
"Got it!" the girls chorused.
With Darius's permission secured, Whimsy began to glow faintly, his grin turning mischievous.
"Hold on tight, ladies," he said. "Next stop: adventure!"
In a flash of swirling colors, the group vanished, leaving behind the familiar halls of the Agency and stepping into the unknown.
