Chapter 396: The Millennium Approaches
"Don't be agitated, Uchiha Itachi," the masked Obito chuckled, "Believe me, the first person to strike at the Uchiha will definitely not be me."
Itachi fell silent.
The Uchiha clan had always wanted to seize power, arguing that Konoha had been founded by both the Senju and Uchiha clans, so why was it that only the Senju were Hokage?
Although the Third and Fourth were not of Senju blood, the Third was the disciple of Senju Tobirama, the Second Hokage, and the Fourth was the disciple of Jiraiya, who was a student of the Third, both arguably heirs to the Senju lineage.
However, Itachi understood that with the Uchiha clan's temperament, they really were not well suited for the position of Hokage.
Now, due to the Police Department's work, the Uchiha clan's reputation among Konoha's civilians was that of a disliked and detested entity – only the naive children in the ninja academy might "admire" the Uchiha.
"A coup d'état, the Uchiha are planning a coup d'état."
Seeing that Itachi remained silent, Obito spoke the words for him, "Do you think the Hokage of Konoha would capitulate if threatened by the Uchiha clan with force?"
In response to Itachi's silence, Obito gave his own answer.
"No!"
"This is different from waging war against other villages, because if the Uchiha were successful, it would suggest to the other families that whoever has the power could take the Hokage's seat!"
"Konoha's Hokage would never set such a precedent! Even the other families would not stand by the Uchiha!"
"The Uchiha, isolated and unsupported!"
Itachi could already envision, the moment the Uchiha actually launched a coup, all of Konoha's families, aside from some individual ninjas, would stand with the Hokage.
The coup would only lead to the Uchiha's utter destruction.
Even if they succeeded, afterwards, the Hokage and the other families would regard the Uchiha as thorns in their side, nuisances to be eliminated at the first opportunity.
By then, his brother would also be...
For Itachi, his beloved Konoha came first, and immediately after, his younger brother, Uchiha Sasuke.
If the coup by the Uchiha clan were to succeed, those easy targets afterward would be children like Sasuke!
"It seems you've thought it through," Obito noted Itachi's changing expressions, feeling sure of victory, he pressed on, "Do you want to see your beloved brother die?"
"What are you really trying to say?" Itachi challenged.
"I'm saying that sacrificing the lives of the Uchiha clan in exchange for your brother's miserable survival seems to be a rather beneficial deal," Obito said, "A coup d'état, regardless of win or lose, will be forcefully suppressed by Konoha. You also have no way to persuade your father, do you have a choice?"
Itachi weighed the pros and cons, torn between his love for Konoha and his dear brother Sasuke.
In the end, he shook his head, "I will not join the so-called Akatsuki Organization, nor will I help you slaughter our clan. When the clan confronts the village leadership, I will try to pacify them."
"How naive! Itachi!" Obito castigated him, "At such a moment, do you think your words would have any effect? You're still just a youth after all."
But Itachi was steadfast in his beliefs and would not cooperate with this masked man before him.
If there had been only the Akatsuki Organization, perhaps he could have made the heaviest decision for the sake of Konoha's stability and for his beloved brother, but now within Konoha, there lurked a mysterious organization wearing crimson, unknown in personnel, number, and origin.
He could not slaughter his own clan and become an Akatsuki undercover agent, thereby becoming a so-called rogue ninja – which meant leaving Konoha.
But now, there were reasons he had to stay in Konoha!
He absolutely could not become a rogue ninja!
"No matter how much you talk, unless you remove the mask, I cannot trust you," Itachi asserted, certain that Obito would not dare to remove his mask.
"You!" Obito, frustrated, said, "Absolutely incorrigible!"
"Remove the mask, Konoha's rogue ninja," Itachi's resolution firming up, he once again picked up the kunai from his belt, the unwavering pitch-black eyes revealing three black tomoe spinning, the pupils taking on a color like fresh blood.
And yet the change did not stop!
The three spinning tomoe finally formed a shape resembling a kaleidoscope.
With these eyes unveiled, Itachi's presence escalated more than an inch, imposing on Obito an immense pressure, like facing an elder with the same marks.
Damn it!
Is this what genius looks like?
And Itachi had made his plan.
Since he couldn't stop his clan from launching a coup against Konoha, capturing this "rogue ninja" now could later provide leverage with the Konoha leadership.
At least, whether the clan's coup succeeded or failed, there would be room for maneuver afterwards.
"It seems you really don't want to join us," Obito's figure gradually faded away, "Then, until next time, Uchiha Itachi."
"Stop!"
Itachi's eyes widened, and black flames began to rise from nothing, but Obito had already disappeared.
"Space–Time Ninjutsu?!"
Unable to sense Obito's presence, Itachi remained on high alert for ten minutes before lowering his guard, thinking, "Seems he has truly left, but who on earth is that guy?"
Itachi decided to report this matter to the Third Hokage.
Find this chapter's source on MV-LEM-PYR.
The Red Organization exists within Konoha, he doesn't know how many people are involved, so he can't tell the Third Hokage, lest he startles the snake in the grass and causes immense destruction to Konoha.
But he has already probed the Akatsuki Organization and known it's an organization outside of Konoha; hence, he must report the situation to the Hokage.
Compared to the Red Organization that has remained hidden within Konoha for many years without exposure, the existence of the Akatsuki Organization outside of Konoha is negligible, and can be discussed with the Hokage, perhaps even helping him detect more members of the Red Organization hidden within Konoha.
"If only the people in my clan could give me less worry, that would be perfect."
Meanwhile.
Uchiha Obito also began to ponder why his persuasion had failed: "I've been observing Itachi for some time now, why did I fail?"
At that moment, a person emerged from the nearby trees, half black, half white, with a head resembling that of a Venus flytrap and also wearing a black cloak with red cloud patterns.
"It seems your plan didn't succeed, Uchiha Obito."
"Call me Madara," Uchiha Obito said gravely.
"Yes, yes, Madara-sama," Black Zetsu nodded earnestly, then began to explain why Obito had failed, "Itachi's personality hasn't changed, and your failure is because Itachi is troubled by another matter entirely."
"What matter?" Uchiha Obito inquired.
"I've searched his house, it was very clean, but I still found some clues," Zetsu said with a hint of mocking smile, "That Itachi, he's afraid of something... In Konoha, there's an organization known as 'Red'."
"Red?"
Uchiha Obito urgently asked, "How long has this organization been around?"
"According to Itachi's diary, it's been a while, at least since before you left Konoha," Zetsu calmly reported his findings, "But this has nothing to do with our plan."
"Is that all you found out?" Obito asked incredulously.
"I haven't found any signs in Konoha; the only source of information is Itachi's diary, which he tears up and burns after writing each entry. The information I just mentioned was deduced from the impressions left on the next page by the pressure of the pen," Zetsu said helplessly, "But truly, keeping a diary isn't a good habit."
"Could it be that Uchiha Itachi is imagining things?" Uchiha Obito didn't believe that an unknown secret organization could exist in Konoha without even the Hokage knowing about it, and for so many years without any incident.
"Do you think Uchiha Itachi is an idiot?" Zetsu retorted.
Uchiha Obito fell silent.
If a genius like Uchiha Itachi was an idiot, then he, Uchiha Obito, must be a fool.
"Hmm? Someone is coming," Zetsu suddenly looked ahead, a silver-haired ninja wearing a mask appeared in front of them.
"Kakashi!"
Under the mask, the pupil of the single eye that Uchiha Obito exposed contracted sharply.
This person in front of him was the last person he wanted to see!
"You aren't Konoha ninjas, are you?" As soon as Kakashi spoke, Obito detected something amiss.
Even though he looked exactly the same and the Chakra aura was indistinguishable.
Yet this was definitely not Kakashi's tone of voice.
The person before him was merely cloaked in Kakashi's appearance.
A Transformation Technique?
Even mimicking the exposed Chakra aura?
He must be a formidable opponent!
However, Zetsu, or rather, Black Zetsu, standing next to Uchiha Obito, sensed that something was off—
The Chakra of the stranger felt strange, as if it did not come from his most revered mother!
This was impossible!
All Chakra in the ninja world should belong to his mother!
Instantly, Black Zetsu considered a possibility.
If the Chakra within him did not belong to his mother, then it was highly likely from another place... from beyond the heavens!
In the memories of his mother, those beings from the Otsutsuki Clan!
The reason his mother had humans worship the Divine Tree and created Zetsu was to defend against the Otsutsuki Clan from beyond, since her act of consuming the fruit of the Divine Tree was tantamount to betrayal.
Moreover, if his memory served him correctly, the one who was supposed to sacrifice his mother to the Divine Tree, ended up being sacrificed to the Ten-Tails by a surprise attack from his mother, enabling her to obtain the power that should have belonged to her clansman.
This was betrayal!
Therefore, his mother had conceived using Zetsu to face the disaster that was to come a millennium later.
Zetsu might be weak, but given a thousand years to cultivate, each individual wouldn't be inferior to those from the Otsutsuki Clan, as could be seen from Uchiha Obito, who after merging with part of Zetsu, was able to negate the side effects of the Mangekyō Sharingan.
Regrettably, this plan was sabotaged by those two unfilial sons.
Now, Black Zetsu began to doubt whether the stranger's Chakra, which did not reflect his mother's will, was from the Otsutsuki?
After all, the thousand-year cycle was nearing its end...
